Jaguar Drowns Crocodile in Brazil

- When jaguars and caiman come together, there is usually only 1 winner, but that doesn't mean that the caiman will give it up easily. This battle took place in the Pantanal, in Brazil, and this caiman was a fighter! The jaguar, exhausted after the struggle underwater, came up with a better plan: just pin the caiman underwater and it will drown, which it did.
I am sure there was plenty of damage caused to the neck when the jaguar caught it, but ultimately, it was the water that got it.
Thanks to Abbie Martin form the Jaguar ID Project - www.jaguaridproject.com - for the amazing footage, and well done on another incredible sighting!

The Jaguar is such a bad ass hunter. And look how comfortable it is in the water. You'd think it was an aquatic animal. No other big cat has mastered that element like the Jaguar
Only 2 big cats are skillful swimmers & naturally love to swim & stay in the water: jaguar & tiger... The different are their habitats. Tigers are endangered species that lives mostly in protected habitats. Otherwise, jaguars live in the wilderness.
CORRECTION! Jaguar is listed as “Near Threatened” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Mostly jaguars also live in protected habitats.
You are spot on there - amazing predators!

Jaguars are significantly larger than leopards & have a much higher bite force (highest of the big cats). Leopards are faster, jags are stronger. Both, though, are incredibly athletic &, pound for pound, the baddest of asses.
This big cat is insanely brave as it needs huge balls to fight of any member off the croc family in the water.
She has huge balls? :)
It's a all ready dead croc.
They prey on caimen all the time.
If you're a jaguar you don't need balls to prepare your meal
Sounds like crocs are a stable choice on jag's menu, although it does take some serious efforts. Also, don't think other crocs will come to the rescue though.

It's all about the incredible bite force of the jags which allows them to hunt caimans on regular basis in Pantanal. They don't really " drown" them but bite around the eyes with such force that they either pierce the skull and/or severe the spinal cord. No other cat or any other predator is capable of that, in some regions of Pantanal the caimans part of the jag diet goes up to 60%.
Jaguars are serious biters.

@@FiveZeroSafaris Black Caiman can grow to 5-6 Meters in length, & weigh up to 450Kgs. People who post comments on these videos seem to think that all Caiman are 3-ft-long at the outside!!! There are videos on UA-cam of a 14-Ft-Long Black Caiman being attacked by a family of 5 Giant River Otters, bcos they didn’t like it being in the same part of the river where they were raising their young. So they initially tried to persuade it to move away to a different part of the river where so they could raise their vulnerable young in less dangerous circumstances, but the Caiman resisted all of their attempts to annoy the hell out of it until it moved away, but it wasn’t budging.
Bearing in mind that Giant River Otters regularly grow to 6-ft in length, & that they’re faster & better, more agile swimmers, not to mention the fact that there were 5 of them against a single Caiman, you’d have thought that it’d be a walkover for them, & yet they were extremely careful not to get anywhere near the Caiman’s Massive Jaws, knowing that one bite would be enough to kill even a Giant River Otter…
In the end, realising that the Big Lizard wasn’t planning to move away any time soon, they attacked it en masse in a concerted effort to kill their rival predator. All Hell then broke loose, & it took the 5 Otters 1 HOUR & 40 MINS of intense non-stop fighting to be able to defeat their much-larger adversary, & it could just as easily have gone the other way.
It’s funny how you never see videos of Jaguars attacking 14-ft-long Caiman, is it not? Obviously that’s bcos Jaguars are much more intelligent than your average “Caiman are ever so tiny” folks posting idiotic comments on YT videos…!!! 👹 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_caiman

This is an amazing feat for a land-based animal being able to swim into the water and kill a large, powerful aquatic animal like a crocodile that is completely adapted to life in the water. That the Jaguar then has the stamina and intelligence to hold its breath and drown the crocodile, which is equally adept at holding its breath and swimming underwater, is nothing short of amazing. I don't think there is another land animal alive with this sort of cunning and bravery.
I think you have hit the nail on the head!
It is a caiman and not a crocodile. The jaguar could have broken the caiman's neck underwater because this is the way jaguars kill their prey. No doubt you have seen the footage of the jaguar pouncing on a caiman that was basking on the riverbank and the jaguar catches the caiman before he escapes and breaks his neck with a powerful bite.
It's crazy that The Jaguar knew that the crocodile couldn't breathe underwater is another dimension of its intelligence.
It's not even a crocodile, it's a caiman. A large spectacled caiman respectively, larger species such as the black caiman could easily overwhelm the jaguar in the same circumstance. This is why the hunting tactics of Amazonian jaguars are much less daring.
Next, Jaguar drowns fish! I understand crocodiles are air breathing. Eventhough crocs (not the shoe brand) can hold their breath for so long, they can still be drowned by a predator that denies it the chance to breathe. In the case of a fish, what if the Jaguar holds the gill openings shut for a while?
What if it brings the fish above the water?
Have no desire how a jaguar drowns a croc as the latter can hold their breath underwater for around 20 mins
It can only hold its breath for extended periods when it is in control and has prepared, not while it is fighting.
