  • Came here to attempt to get a video of a neon worded pedestrian sign that someone had on UA-cam and this is what I saw when I arrived: a countdown pedestrian signal. Honestly, I was extremely sad about seeing this as the neon pedestrian signal actually was pretty cool. If they had to just move traffic lights, they would’ve just been able to add a look over here look over this direction. this worded pedestrian signal doesn’t look like it has been there for years. Still happy that there is surprisingly in LED worded pedestrian signal that has still been here, which is at another intersection to the left. At least the timer on this pedestrian signal in the video is doing OK and the countdown pedestrian signal is doing OK as well so I’m just going to let the city keep this pedestrian signal, and just put the worded pedestrian signal and a symbolic hand and man without a countdown on the median.
Here is a video online I found of the pedestrian signal that used to be here:

MUTCD and CA MUTCD no longer allow the worded pedestrian signals. They must use the hand/person lights.

@@traffic.engineer they do allow them, but cities are just in the desire of switching.

@@TrafficLightAdventurer Please read the standards before posting. FHWA did not allow worded pedestrian signals after the 2000 MUCTD, which California adopted in the state MUTCD. Existing signals were permitted to remain as long as they were functional. Replacements were required to use the hand/person signal.
I personally, though, think this was a nonsense standard. I did not see any studies that said this better conveyed the message. If anything, the worded Winkomatics imitated the vehicular signals to convey the walk and don't walk.

@@traffic.engineer oh. But they still do have worded pedestrian signals around Pennsylvania, but I know they are still a lot common there so then the CA MUTCD disallowed this now and that’s why it’s rare here.

Aww that's disappointing. Why can't they keep just one?

@@sandiegotrafficlightstrain354 I don’t know. It’s a little disappointing, but at least there are still two at the city which are worded LED if you see my other video surprisingly there is just one left outside of California and even some other so I’m still happy there are some still standing. I’ve just told the city to bring back the old pedestrian signals and just add a red LED countdown hammer that is a little smaller under the pedestrian signal which could have been a better choice. Sad too to see the new countdown. Pedestrian signal here because the worded one looked pretty cool but the best thing about countdowns is that they give useful information to pedestrians even if they don’t know English, or don’t know how much time is left to cross. The countdowns on pedestrian signals are very rare in Australia or Italy. The link of a video of the old pedestrian signal there because the Google Street view is out of reach on the worded pedestrian signal. Discovered that there was a worded pedestrian signal on Google Street view, but I saw that there is a new countdown, which is disappointing to see and maybe I could file a request over bringing back the old pedestrian signal and adding a red LED countdown timer underneath that.

@@sandiegotrafficlightstrain354 they are worded pedestrian signals that show weight and yield, and they are LED not like a vehicle signal.

@@TrafficLightAdventurer No they are not. It is for city buses leaving the bus stop. The word "Wait" is telling the bus driver to wait and the word "Yield" is telling the bus driver to merge into traffic. There is no crosswalk and pedestrians are not told to yield because that makes no sense.

@@sandiegotrafficlightstrain354oh. That means that pedestrians will not know what that means then.
