If you want somebody to understand the heart of England and the essence of being English, and being working class in the 60's/70s, or looking at English society - then they could learn this by listening to half a dozen well-chosen kinks songs; this being one of them. The lyrics are modern English poetry and should be taught in schools - Autumn Almanac, Dead End Street, Village Green, Shangri-La etc etc. Reality, political, mocking and loving at the same time. Among the best and most poetic lyricists of all time.
I love this album. As someone who lives in the most backwards and rural part of england i can tell you the english countryside is the best and purest place in the world.
England is a cold and dull country...Who would compare rural England to the Austrian Alps or The Grand Canyon...England is okay for a picnic if you catch the week of summer we get...England is nothing special...The Lake District is dull and boring...If your lucky you might see a squirrel...
Like an early baroque minstrel who couches his intelligence in whimsicality. Ray Davies is a force of nature; so intense in conversation, yet child like and mordant in song.
Out in the country, Far from all the soot and noise of the city, There's a village green. It's been a long time Since I last set eyes on the church with the steeple Down by the village green. Twas there I met a girl called daisy And kissed her by the old oak tree. Although I loved my daisy, I saw fame, And so I left the village green. I miss the village green, And all the simple people. I miss the village green, The church, the clock, the steeple. I miss the morning dew, fresh air and Sunday school. And now all the houses Are rare antiquities. American tourists flock to see the village green. They snap their photographs and say "gawd darn it, Isn't it a pretty scene?" And daisy's married tom the grocer boy, And now he owns a grocery. I miss the village green, And all the simple people. I miss the village green, The church, the clock, the steeple. I miss the morning dew, fresh air and Sunday school. And I will return there, And I'll and daisy, And we'll sip tea, laugh, And talk about the village green. We will laugh and talk about the village green.
"Twas there I met a girl called daisy And kissed her by the old oak tree. Although I loved my daisy, I saw fame, And so I left the village green" Oh, Ray... :(
+geof holmes If you like this (the original studio version),- try Ray Davis & Crouch End Chorus version that he recorded a few years back (from an album "The Kinks Choral") The whole album is absolutely brilliant !
It took me a few seconds using my phone because this is the future and with obtrusive over casting reaches of Google and technology you can find anything you want with a few taps on a glass digitizer with high definition LCD underneath just above multicore processors overclocked to transfer data in a blink all in a package smaller than a standard wallet with more power than most computers had ten years ago. Ah the future where ignorance is a choice in a sea of information obtainable by even people with lesser money in modern countries. Yet somehow the populous in this country becomes less intellectual and intelligent with each generation.
This kinda brings me back to a time when I was a little kid during those boring hot summer days, in my hut of a home. There were those old French, Russian movies on TV, which I could barely understand even with voiceovers...and the documentaries showing faraway European countrysides...and the Red Balloon...

The Kinks are my all time favourite band. This song is so so so special. Along with Two Sisters this is unfathomably important to my entire being. Love to all of you here x
This album is a masterpiece. I loved it so much the first time I heard it. That is super rare for me because I have to listen to an album a few times to finally be obsessed with it.
I used to live in the slums and every evening me my sister and mother used to watch the sunset at our doorstep (as our house at a top area) I didn't know the song that time but listening to this made me take back to that time as me and my sister were just 8-10 years old no pressure of world was there it's really amusing man

This song perfectly fits with the village's rustic aesthetic.
Any luck catching them killers then?

Hot Fuzz 2007 , thank you!!
The Kinks are simply the purest English rock band ever. Ray Davies has documented modern English society like no other.
I agree.
Together with the smiths

I love harpsichord in pop/rock songs. It’s not used very often especially nowadays, but I love the sound it brings.
John Cale plays harpsichord on Nico's All That Is My Own on her Desertshore album, which he brilliantly arranged and produced.
I think some Zombies songs have too... not sure though, have to check again. But The Zombies rule anyways too
it was all over pop music in those days
See the theme to Danger Man.
An absolute masterpiece. Bach and Mozart would’ve loved it.
So, the Kinks had two songs on the best British cop film of all time? Awesome sauce, guys.
***** it's an intentional addition to the film. the songs paint a picture of how innocent the village is supposed to be.
that, and the cult is a sort of "village green preservation society"

Agree. Though 《Sunny Afternoon》《Lola》and《Waterloo Sunset》are also brilliant songs.
Waterloo sunset by far.
