In this video we explain how to prepare soil for planting grass seed.
Steps discussed:
1. Remove existing vegetation and/or weeds.
2. Wait 7 days and then till your soil.
3. Install your sprinkler system.
4. Use landscaping rake to level your yard.
5. If needed, use lawn roller to firm up your soil bed.
6. Spread starter fertilizer and plant the grass seed.

You are my best friend right now. My current situation is 4000 square feet are with sink holes, rocks etc. And 4 loads of dump dirt... 2 clean and two dirty. Goal: nice flat yard with grass. After the bobcat guys spread the dirt, based on what I'm hearing I can go right ahead and rake it, install sprinkler, press if needed then seed right off the bat? For some reason I had this idea of leaving the land for maybe 6 months or so after grading for it to level out on its own then till and proceed with next steps... let me know your thoughts :-)

Hi, after I seeded grass, raked it slightly. Alot of grass seeds are on top of the surface. Is it ok? 4days past now, and Im worried about it.. Is it worth going to buy few top soil bags and sprinkle that top soil on the seeds? Or shoukd I just wait?

Everything but the weed killer is great! Don't put poison on your lawns! It ends up in the rivers & water supply systems. Plus, dandelions have many healing properties & nutrients!

Can we just till the yard really well before seeding, then do a selective herbicide spot pray when weeds come up? I really don’t want to soak my entire yard with chemicals. My entire neighborhood has well water and culvert systems
I’m no professional but I always avoid chemicals as much as possible. Id say pull weeds by hand and just trust that it’s natural to have some weeds and it’s better than poisoning the ground and local water.
Despite raking out some of the bigger stones in this video, the soil looks like it has a lot of small rocks (which is the problem I have in my backyard). Can you still plant the grass seed with small rocks in the soil? This is a major concern I have. Thanks for the video too.

Hello, I have a lawn roller that filled up to its capacity with water, can be 270 pounds. I want to use it to embed lawn seeds into the soil. Is 270 pounds the right weight for this?
That’s not needed. Just a light raking for good seed to soil contact is sufficient. I’m sure your yard is already installed. This is for future reference. Hope it helps 😊

Well roundup is a carcinogen that's been poisoning food environment and people for decades. Someone just got paid out 200+ million in damages because of roundup injuries. Nasty stuff, better off to use straight vinegar, pull the weeds by hand or use neem oil. Neem oil is very powerful and will kill weeds, bugs and fungus on contact but it is 100% plant derived and safe for humans and animals and garden plants.

Thats how the soil was at my home, it just requires more water but you can get the grass looking just as good as any other.

Use neem oil, it's an antifungal and pesticide, in some cases defoilator of certain weeds. The other option is to use concentrate vinegar, it burns weeds out. Honestly good ol hand picking is the best because then you remove the weed's root system.

JohnLothe I'm in the process of seeding a lawn, but there are small patches of existing grass and weeds. besides pulling by hand which puts my back in a bad place after awhile, what should I use on these preexisting spots? P.S. I have kids and animals as well, which is why I ask for environmental and my family's safety
I think i would just till and rake up any of the obvious weeds that are left behind. The ones that get buried may germinate again but may also die being buried under the soil? Not sure. You could try putting a tarp over the lawn for a week or two that should kill everything.

Of course, I saw the post was from almost 6 years ago (I guess you are referring to the June 10, 2013 post date, which isn't 7 years ago. . that would make our current date some time in June 2020). The thing is I had chicken pasturage seed in my CART, ready to buy but had a question about it and had tried to do a live CHAT on their website but I tired on 3 different occasions but no one eve 'chatted' back. And I'd sent them an email and had gotten no answer. This was the only place I saw to contact them, as I didn't even see a phone number on their website. I didn't want to send a payment out to a company that wasn't in business.
Now. . .. Are you someone who works there and/or was trying to be helpful, or were you just a no-body trying to be a smart-ass? If the later you succeeded. If the former, don't worry about it because I finally got feed-back from them via email. (now if I am totally off base and you were trying to be helpful I apologize)

its not pretty grass but what edibles might grow there later. weeds by hand ..I have done that ins very SMALL area. great exercise but you have to cover it fast. weeds are like vultures as I swear they hide in the clouds. no answer yet, but pesticides scare me..so I have ugly but sustainable lawn
