The girl that was complaining about country music did SO MUCH complaining that her group got eliminated (that group didn't really do very well with the country thing). Interestingly, she went pro singing country!! Scott was talking about Pentatonix not being into country, but he wasn't speaking for the entire group. Avi grew up a big country and folk fan. Kirstie has said many times that one of her favorite singers is Shania Twain, and had even gone to one of her concerts in high school. As for their performance, it was pleasant (and better than the original like you said), but was, as Shawn said, also their simplest arrangement. It didn't do anything to advance them in the competition (they had already done that in this show with Born to Be Wild), but it didn't hurt them either. And considering Kirstie was sick, she handled the lead vocal fantastically. In reality, Pentatonix outdid every other group in this episode in the country genre, after already outdoing everyone with Born to Be Wild, so they won this episode rather easily. This was one of Shawn's first uses of "meat and potatoes" (small case letters), but it would be a little bit later before he officially named them "Meat and Potatoes" (capital letters)...so the pot roast is simmering and close to being ready to serve.
Country's not my style either, but Pentatonix certainly made this song enjoyable to listen to. Years later, they covered another country song, and as a duet with Dolly Parton on her well-known Jolene. That collab won them their third grammy. You might want to check that one out, it's a great arrangement. Nice reaction, looking forward to the rest of your PTX's Sing Off journey. By the way, Superfruit in one of their vlogs reacted to snippets of their Sing Off performances. It's fun to watch and might be interesting to react to once you're done with the Sing Off vids.
Thank you for this reaction. I look forward to your reactions to 10, 11 and 12. They also did two performances on the final night. One was with the host, Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees. The voting had already ended after 12 and unbeknownst to them, they had already won due to the votes. They also came back and performed as guests for seasons 4 and 5.
13, Without You, is rather forgettable so at least I wouldn't mind if he skipped that. But I really liked 14, the collab with Nick Lachay. Kirstin singing in Spanish is fantastic!
I believe for the explaination of the Country theme, they mixed all the groups for one take and then went from performance to performance so there's no behind the scenes for each group like other performances. Each group performed two songs for one episode so they had a lot to cram. The person who posted to video reused that intro for every group.
Same same. Not a country fan, so their unexpected slide into reggae made this really cool. I know it's a favourite genre of Avi's, and he really seemed at home with it, whereas his reggae moves reminded me of "white boy trying to dance." No shade here. Still loving them all, and just poking a bit of fun..
@@larrywt656 So it does! Guess I should follow my own recommendations to reactors, and listen to the original first. PTX sure does ramp up the reggae, as you say, and they totally leave Sugarland in the dust. Kevin, ya think?
I’m not a big fan of country either. I can stand most of it now that i’m more mature but when i was younger i literally couldn’t stand to listen to any of it. I’m from Indiana so it’s a pretty big mix of cultures being so close to chicago but still being far enough away that we are corn and soy fields for days. :) this is my least favorite week because i don’t like the original music. But they do a great job with it.
Great reaction. Get ready, Performances 10, 11, and 12 will absolutely blow your socks off, I cant wait to see your reactions to them.
This was done in the same week as Born to be Wild. Probably why it was kept simple and easy with Kirstie being sick. Still amazing.

Oh yes!! We watch the whole video!!

The blonde making fun of country started singing country after the show. lol
No way 😂
Enjoying this journey...can’t wait till #10!!!
Believe it or not, this is the first mention of "meat and potatoes." Even stripped down and simple they are cooking!

Wasn't there a mic balance issue with 13 so they couldn't hear themselves or each other?
You feel her but she is now a country artist!
This was the same night she was sick...the 2nd performance of that night. Better than the original...100% agree.
I was so surprised you did not react more to 'meat and potatoes!' Lol!

Avi has 2 dance moves: hips and hand wave but dang it if he doesn't utilize it to the fullest.
It is Kirstins birthday today.

The original song by Sugarland also has that reggae section, but Pentatonix made it even more reggae.

So I notice your whiteboard in the background. Could you do a video or two on what looks like goal setting?
Yeah I'll try to do one and see how everyone responds!
It gets better. Fasten your seat belt.

Country is terrible. Scott saved this song by doing the reggae section. Cowboy boots are devil's spawn, Avi nearly fell off the stage because of them.
