  • Vinyl Record lovers rejoice! We were lucky enough to get to go behind the scenes at Amoeba Music, a store that I spend so much time at that I may as well pay rent. We talked to Pete Majors, who has been a buyer/pricer for them since the Hollywood store opened! We talk about records, Amoeba, and all sorts of good music related things. Take a sneak peak behind Amoeba to areas that most people never get to see, and please enjoy this awesome interview!
Check out Pete and his bands!

When I used to live in LA I'd spend hours there and all the other record stores in LA and San Diego. I'd fly for the day to SF and back just to crate dig at the Amoeba's and Rasputin's in the Bay Area. I'd also fly for the day to Vegas or Phoenix and back to check out the record stores there. No wonder I've got so many records - and frequent flyer miles! That's one of the things I miss about living in LA. But living where I live now, I get to do the same one-hour "vinyl shopping flights" to Minneapolis , Chicago-Milwaukee, Denver and St. Louis. AND IT SUCKS IN THE WINTER!!!

What an incredible interview and so informative. It was really cool to see various parts of the store and as you mentioned it being your favorite record/music store it is also mine. The gentleman you interview appeared to be a very nice individual and you can really tell he enjoys his work. Great vid and thank you for posting.

I really enjoyed this video. You asked really good questions. I have to agree on rare records statement. Specifically the Beatles Butcher Cover. Its rare but not as rare as to what people think...well depending what state it is of course. 1st states without the "sticker" ever pasted over to cover up the butcher shot are *EXTREMELY* rare with only 100 copies or so in the world. 2nd states are becoming rarer as people peel them. 3rd states not as rare because this is what you find as the finished product from peeling. Again, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you. Take care Peace!

    Hello from Argentina Matt!
Thank you for sharing this amazing experience and let us visit Amoeba through this video. I haven't traveled to the States yet, but definitely this is going to be my first stop when visiting Los Angeles.
Thank you for all the love that you put in your videos, and like Jarrett from Vinyl Eyezz says: "Keep spinning that vinyl!"
    Thanks again! ✌👋😀

Very cool behind the scenes stuff.
"Nuances" is the perfect word for vinyl. Because there literally, compared to a CD, are more nuances possible because the sample rate is infinite. And you can hear that.
    '2500' 'wow'.
I thought he was going to say 25000 :D.
I love the 'we welcome all'-sign. That's what music should be all about. Universal and unifying.
I do not own a copy of Tapestry. Am I missing out? :D.
Man, people being convinced what they have is rare. It happens in every hobby. Cars, audio equipment, games, vinyl records...
Asking and receiving is always the problem. People don't seem to get that.
I'm selling second hand audio equipment at my local record store and the opposite happens. People go 'but I can buy that amplifier on the internet for half the money'.
Well, yes. But I have to buy it, check it, fix it, take photographs of it and advertise it, the record store wants a bit too and, and this is the one people keep forgetting; If you buy it on the internet, it may be broken, often even if sellers try to be honest, they don't know something isn't quite right. And I buy all this broken equipment so you don't have to. And I have to put that into the price too because I have to scrap about 35% of what I buy.
The bubble won't pop. The CD bubble has popped, other people stream. Vinyl will be the only physical format soon.
Also presses are being made by big companies these days, Sony started pressing for the first time since 1989. Prices will drop except for the 'big bucks' artists.
Neil Young, as much as I like his old work, will not hesitate to ask 90 bucks for another record sometime in the future.
The cassette bubble may pop, which is a pity as it's great for small artists and it's a great mixtape format too, if you know how to use it ;).
P.s.: Dear videographer, sometimes aperture wide open isn't ideal :D. f4 is actually quite useful especially with cheaper lenses as they're never quite sharp wide open ;)
Also a fixed aperture lens is definitely the way to go, Tamron and Sigma have some nice affordable ones. Also that hiss and the (cooling? Computer) in the background; Adobe Audition has a nice noise reduction option that takes a print of the noisefloor and you can apply that to the sound. Works beautifully.
This is definitely constructive criticism by the way, not trying to bash your work. I loved the video ;).

Outstanding video, I've been to the Hollywood Amoeba store only twice. I've been to the San Francisco and Berkeley Amoeba stores too many times to count, I've been to most of the Rasputin stores hundreds of times too. Streetlight Records is on the smaller side, but still one of my favorites to visit. I been to tons of other stores in other states, and I can honestly say that Amoeba in Hollywood is the best record store that I have ever been to. Now I'm sure there are comparable record stores around the nation, but on my journey so far, AMOEBA ALL THE WAY

Anyone whom actually plays that and thinks its a masterpiece should have a family member escort them to the nearest looney bin. Very cool to see this. There are no stores like this here in CT. Two thoughts on collecting; 1) Your collection in general, will only get as big as your shelving capacity - why buy if you can’t display. 2) Some collect to achieve SETS, as in every Beatles Album and pressing just for bragging rights, investment? There is no reasoning with these people, they will never sell. I collect to PLAY, and for me I limit myself to 1100 to rotate through. I know I could play 3 LPs a day (easily) for a year and end up playing the lot. No guilt and it’s not hoarding. Ask yourself, if I haven’t played it for 3 years, which collector am I, Practical or Disillusioned? What if your kids don’t want to inherit it? Enjoy it now, for your sake.

I have a 5x5 Kalax shelf already filled up plus many more records awaiting another shelf kit, I was given 2000 12" 78s that would have otherwise ended up on the garbage tip, last month that record collector was culling some low caliber LPs, around 50 of them were put in household garbage bin when I wasn't in Adelaide to save them, I said "why didn't you put em aside for me ?" He said I had to bite the bullet and not have them in the way. I live 250Km from Adelaide and usually stay for a 2 week stint, last July too cold and lot of rain
