Cool documentary! Really good work! :D LONG LIVE VINYL!
Vinyl Eyezz Thank-you so much! This project turned me into a record collector haha I've got like 50 or so already!
Vinyl Eyezz VINYL AIN'T DEAD!!!
Sure isn't!
Vinyl Eyezz yay jarrett
moonage daydream but I like cd’s..
When you buy a song from iTunes, you do not own the music. What you own is the license to play the song. And the license is not even transferable. You cannot give your iTunes "collection" to anyone if you abide by their TOS. That's one thing that I like about vinyl, though it also holds true for CD's or cassettes. But, it's something you can hold and when you pass away it can be handed down to your kids. If they want them. :)
M` Coffey Couldn’t agree more! Vinyl is a physical medium that can be passed down. You’re not going to hand over your hard drive of mp3s or your Spotify to your grandkids are you?
I think one of the best arguments for vinyl is the longevity o the medium itself. You can find records that are 80 years old now that still play well. I wonder if cd's/digital archiving will stand up to the test of time like vinyl has
Vinyl lasts decades! CD's are still inherently digital and they are no where near as robust as vinyl is. There is just so much that vinyl offers that other mediums do not, and that's why I love it.
CD’s are starting to rot already actually. It’s become a big issue in rare video game collecting. It’s really sad.
Both you guys are TOTALLY WRONG CDs if we don't scratch them they can last longer than a human lifetime seriouslly :
I have CDs since 1991 OVERPLAYED and they sound EXCATLY the same i have replaced my CDplayers and they sound the same too but my vinyl overplayed records don't and keep replacing the styluses :
The lazer of the CDplayers cannot harm the recorded surface of the CD unlike the stylus can , tapes EVEN WORST
Somewhere in 1997 maybe 1998 i've read in a hi-fi audio magazine about the durability of >
and the article said that CDs may last comfortably 100 years
You may won't believe what i said but it's fine with me :
But in reallity my CDs from 1991 sounds the same yet the PLs not >
CDs have clearer and noiseless sound all they need is that good production recording not this SHIT LOUDNESS WAR
From the other hand LPs have noise problems < surface and motor noise and wow n' flatter they may sound sweeter n' softer but this thing comes from the distortions records have in other words the sound of records is colorized
Anyway i do know you will dissagre with me but again it's fine with me i just wanted to clarify afew things .
Good-bye dudes and have happy listenings with the music formats you all LOVE MOST actually this one is WHAT IT MATTERS FINALLY :-)
@@specificallybroad Sucks because I collect video games and they use DVDS which are similar to CDS so they get disc rot and die one day.
@@Badassvidsz i've lost more than a few cd's to rot
I also just recently got into vinyl about a year ago after my dad past away and he left me all his records now I'm hooked
Jason Hobbs That’s what’s amazing about records, they can be passed down generations. You can enjoy the grooves your dad once did. You would never hand down a hard drive with MP3’s would you? Haha!
LACHLAN PAULL FILMS nope I have bought about 11 new records myself and yes these records will go to my kids
Jason Hobbs that’s great man keep it going! Hope you enjoyed the doco!
LACHLAN PAULL FILMS loved it good work
GODDAMMIT STOP TOUCHING THE RECORDS ALL OVER!
I know what you mean!
Thought the same thing guys
no shit makes me cringe
So, so frustrating to see that! Take care of your stuff, people!
people make a mistake depending on streaming platforms 100%! any album from streaming can get pulled and go out of print at anytime! for example nuclear assault's "survive" Album went out of print and pulled, just recently Whitesnake's Album's "self title" and "slide it in" and one other was pulled because of copyright disputes! if you would have bought the record or CD you would always have it!
Mate I 100% agree! If you have vinyl record, you physically own that album. No one can take it away from you. Everyone has music on their computers and phones now, but if you loose that device, their goes "your" music.
Vinyl City
>Implying pirate bay doesn't exist
Peter Clifton's insight is fantastic. Great short and free doco but definitely needed some female input in what (from the outside looking in) feels like a male-dominated world
The old man was so passionate
sasha boucher He truly is! It was such a pleasure to hear about his history with vinyl!
RIP Peter Clifton...really cool guy who led an amazing life!
Couldn't agree more. I collaborated with Peter on a screenplay following this project! He had an amazing life indeed. Miss him a lot.
...I really need to know where Carl Cox is picking up these '45inch' singles.... also what he's playing them on
0:20 Where can I get one of these?. A Gorgeous Girl Who likes Records, Wow. Everything I bought home wanted Me to throw the Lot out. So I threw them out Instead. 3:10 the Acetate Is Not what Is used to press the Records from. It Is a Pre-Demo of the Unfinished LP or Single. Like a Pr-Cuser to the Finished Record. Elvis Presley would have a Box of Acetates (Worth a Fortune Now) And he would play them when traveling on Early version of a Crosley, So He could learn them, and also Listen to new Material for Him to consider to Record Himself. Quite a lot of the other big groups did this as well. I bought the Entire 75 chart singles over three days with the Bonus money from My first Proper Job. In the End of December start of January, When the Chart stalls for a week with no new entries In 1973-74, And I have added every New entry since Now 2020 and I am a Vintage Video DJ. And still have them all like Carl Cox here, and still play them when I can. The only thing that gets Me Is when they say, "You can get anything You want on MP3 or Streaming" Nooooooooooooooooo You can't! there Is Thousands of Tracks that Is Only available On Vinyl. I am Digitally doing transfers to MP3 or CD's Because People want those tracks but cannot find them. I even Do them for Radio Stations Who struggle to fill In Requests.
I was born in the 2000's so I never knew the era of vinyl but damn I feel so greatful for this heritage and have so much respect for it.Hoping to have my own collection one day.Such a wonderful documentary!
Ηλιάνα Κόκκορη You will have a collection someday! You just have to start with one record and go from there. Since filming this I have accumulated about 50 records, which isn't much, but I love the experience of playing a record. Seems much more meaningful than playing a song on your computer.
aidan ford any particular brands you recommend? :)
Great! Thanks! I love the look of the old school turntables. A lot of modern ones try and replicate their designs nowadays haha
aidan ford thanks for the advice,I was thinking about going vintage actually
Lachlan Paull totally agree, that's the main reason I want to start a collection!
What a darn good doc. i found out about this doc from reading replies from another sight and someone recommending it. Its nice to see and hear others appreciate vinyl.
Cudahy 1960 Thannkyou so much! I'm glad you found it!
This project taught me a lot about the unique experiences that come with collecting music on vinyl! You just can't get these things with digital music!
Very good documentary. Enjoyed watching. I still mix with vinyl and have a growing collection. Nothing compares to a mix with vinyl. Thx for the share !
Silvialain Thanks a lot man, really appreciate that. This project taught me a lot about collecting vinyl and since filming I can't stop collecting! Haha
As a 22 year old, I grew up with cassettes and CDs. When I turned 18 my best friend bought me a copy of Queen’s “A Night At The Opera”. And from that day on I’ve been hooked on vinyl. Forget CDs, and MP3s. My heart is forever with vinyl
Zak Bowen Could agree more. MP3s and the like have there time and place, but vinyl just offers such a unique and memorable musical experience that they will never be able to provide.
i started collecting jazz vinyl when i was fourteen in minneapolis in 1958 ..bill evans, miles davis, john coltrane. i remember buying coltranes giant steps. i thought the cover was so cool and the music like nothing i had heard of before. so mysterious! family moved to los angeles in 1961 and thats when the really serious collecting began.. ray averys rare records in hollywood at the time, and sams record store in the black area of los angeles. in later years in san francisco. vinyl is definitly the archival medium of choice...a great ride as they say!!!!
Thanks for taking the time to share that Allan. Vinyl records are relics that really do last forever. It's not surprising to me that it's making a comeback because they hold much more history and meaning than digital alternatives.
This film is balanced so good, talking about emotional quality of vinyl and not sound quality which isn't really so important. Very impressive work.
Thank-you so much! Yeah I found it was much more engaging to watch the people, as you see the real reasons and stories behind their collecting.
What is the name of the instrumental music at the very beginning of this video?
J. GHOUL It’s called “Warm Wind Brewing” - the full title is at the end credits!
Carl was hitting up Beanos in Croydon (RIP) used to see him there!!
No way! How many years ago was this?
@@specificallybroad i mean Beanos record store not Carl Cox
Bought from Beano's in the 80s Rog . Pacific sunset records.
Nice job! I collect vinyl... thinking about starting a show soon on it. Thanks! Subbed!
Supreme Lord Commander That's awesome man! What exactly were you planning for the show?
I've been thinking about starting a VLOG series about collectors!
Your lovely film captures that indefinable thing that makes owning records so much more special than digital recordings I wish you would make one of 78 record collecting as its a genre of collecting recordings that are often unavailable in any other format.
That story at 8:56!!! Wow!! Most of us will never get to tell a story like that EVER!! LOL. Reminds me of the time I met David Porter (who wrote for Stax records). I had a chance to chat with him for a long time and he was telling stories about working on Sittin On the Dock Of Bay, Soulfinger, Hold On I'm Comin', and all those classic R&B hits. As he is sharing these stories it just kind of hits me about 20 mins in....every time he say "Otis this.." or "Issac this.." Dammit he is talking about Otis Redding and Issac Hayes lol!! It totally blew my mind when I actually paid attention to that fact. I bet listening to this guys stories would pretty darn awesome as well. To have a story that involves Paige and Richards is just amazing!
Yeah it was pretty incredible to hear of all the artists Peter had worked with! He had so many interesting stories to tell, it was hard to edit them down!
Among the many films about record collecting that I found on UA-cam, this has to be one of the nicest! Your choice of interviewees is excellent, each giving different angles on the subject. I enjoyed it very much - thank you!
For a more morbid look at the sometimes funny, sometimes sad underbelly of record collecting addiction, may I suggest taking a look at "Alan Zweig's Vinyl":
ua-cam.com/video/nkCMSrvOTAo/v-deo.html
crispymolecule Thankyou for your kind words! It was really important to focus on the PEOPLE with this doco. It's about the collectors and what vinyl means to them! I saw a lot of documentaries that focused on the sound and that's only one element of record collecting! There is so much more magic to it then just that!
nicely done documentary about the great world of vinyl record collecting!
Thanks Rob! Since filming this I've accumulated quite a record collection myself!
Great video, so many different ways of looking at vinyl and this is a good approach
Vinyl Kats Thankyou! I really wanted to focus on the experience of record collecting and the uniqueness of the physical record. It’s not just about the sound quality which most documentaries focus on.
Still such a great doco! Thanks for the interview - was so fun. Great memories!
Appreciate that homie! Great interview, 18:30-19:16 still makes me piss myself laughing. Great memories indeed!
Because of the title, this video was off my radar. I only found it because of your comment on Vinyl Eyezz comment.
Very well done!
Glad you found it!
Me too. I need to broaden my search criteria. :)
26:33 VERY nice picture !
Such a different time! You don’t see pictures like that anymore.
Living in Australia makes it really hard to get new records, especially underground stuff at decent prices but damn it we do it anyway!
Slackbabbath you always have INXS and Neil Finn lol
yeah tell me about it man, seriously.
A good production here and excellent content
Wait, a Bruce Willis record at 6:08? WTF I gotta google that right now......
margaretsville When my friend Ryan pulled that out in the interview, I couldn't stop laughing. As he said, you never know what you will find with vinyl!
6:15 that cartridge looks awfully close to the record
#Vinyljunkiesunite✊
Vinyl shall live forever!
Sure will! #vinylrevival
Nicely done. Really enjoyed watching this.
Thanks Derek, you made my day! It's a topic I have become very passionate about. Glad you enjoyed it!
7:40 Around 150k pieces? That's like 8.5 years of music.
Incredible collection hey! What do you mean by 8.5 years of music?
I have actually uploaded my full interview with Carl on my channel!
Estimating 30 minutes per piece... it's an incredible collection.
Thanks, I'll check it out!
It's an insane amount of records! I still can't believe it haha
If you have then time then good on you!
What a cute documentary! I had fun watching! Thak you!
Thank-you so much! I'm glad people are enjoying it!
Someone buy him some outer sleeves
you can manipulate the head of the record player and just drop it on your favorite track ..cut.. Dope Lemon??? UPTOWN FOLKS THEN!
It's in the name "RECORD" a time capsule a recalll, once is press up ,it a memory for as long as you own it.
I agree! You can have so many fond memories with a record. On the other hand, an MP3 is not quite the same...
Music has been big my whole life. At one time I had a massive Cd collection for a teenager. They were stolen. That was 20 yrs ago. And while I just recently(6mos) bought my first record and table, I never once bought a digital song or album. Ive just been streaming music from streaming sites like Pandora and Spotify. I live that records are tactile, tangible and oh so exciting. I feel an immediate connection with a record. It brings back that magic u felt at 15 buying a Cd and looking at the album notes until u got home to listen to it because cars dint really have Cd players back then.
This was great man, found it whilst doing research for my own short doc (only a couple of mins) on a similar topic
Thanks a lot Evan! Before I started this project I did the same thing - watching short vinyl doco's on UA-cam. It's a great start!
Great doco mate. Nice to hear some Aussie perspectives.
if you uploaded daily or hell of a lot your channel could blow up awesome editing
You just made my day man! I really appreciate that! I really want to keep posting content but it's hard to know what to post and what people will like. I put a lot of hours into editing this film and it's so nice to hear people are enjoying it.
I actually added a new video yesterday! Only short but it's a nice shot I got recently!
6:06 The Return Of Bruno by Bruce Willis... I've got that! Very underrated album, I got it for Under The Boardwalk, but discovered some amazing groovy tracks playing the rest of the album. I wouldn't get that if I simply got the MP3... great documentary, well done - Duncan aka diDprojects...
The single best reason to collect records is that it is the most efficient way to discover new music, place it in historical context, and thereby gain the greatest satisfaction from the consumption of music.
Specially the labels are important.
Nice work mang.
Thanks mate!

Great Docu. I start collecting Vinyl at this Time and I search for Videos. Thank you for making this great Film
Sven Pieloth Glad you liked the film!
I went from 1 to 3 to about 100 now..... I bought 6, then the rest at garage sale. Total 35, from there 120 for 40, and I'm at around 3-400 now. And more coming
semperfi 1918 Record collecting becomes so addictive. I only realised this once I bought my first few, now it’s hard to stop!
@@specificallybroad I did a quick count... over 500. Not including 45's and 78's
semperfi 1918 Awesome man, keep it up!
is vinyl making a comeback in Australia?
rooben subramanen Definitely. Two of my Aussie friends tried to convince me to invest in a record player, it's what inspired the project haha
Thanks man,gives me hope.
@@specificallybroad 78 records here in Perth just closed down after 47yrs! Such a shame but I have a record store not even 800m from my house! Replay records.
@@NathanChisholm041 That's a shame but at least you still have a store close by! Keep up the collecting!
GUYS STOP TOUCHING YOUR RECORDS PICK THEM UP PROPERLY, FINGER PRINTS CAN DAMAGE RECORDS
Really good little documentary.Captured the essence what it feels like & means 2 B a vinyl collector. It was so funny noticing records that I own, or have wanted 2 buy.
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it!
this is a professionally made documentary 🔥 very interesting
Thank-you! As an aspiring filmmaker this makes me thrilled! Appreciate it!
great doco. just came back from a today in the UK and added about 25 to my collection from markets and stores. Such a gold range there. Now have nearly 50 of my all time favourite artists/albums. I'm hooked on listening!
That's great to hear! The UK would have some awesome record stores. I've recently hit about 50 record myself!
does anyone know what the album is at 18:58 that Ryan is holding up??
Amazing. Really glad I watched this congrats.
David Castle thanks mate! Really appreciate that!
I love that you chose this for your Honours project. How bloody cool! I really enjoyed watching the doco - the people you included in it are really interesting as are the reasons for their collections. How cool is that Rolling Stones tour case !! I am a child of the 70s and stopped buying vinyl when CDs overtook and eclipsed everything. Fortunately, I kept my collection and as of recently have gotten back into collecting vinyl records. Rather than going for numerous records, I prefer to research the album I want as extensively as possible and go for the best sounding (audiophile) pressing. These records are more expensive than regular reissues however, if chosen wisely they are a tangible investment with the value only going up if kept and stored well.
Thank you for your film - fantastic stuff!
Steve Dundee I’m so glad you enjoyed the doco Steve, I really appreciate the kind words. If there’s one thing this project taught me, it’s that tangible, vinyl collections seem to hold a lot more sentiment than digital ones. I love my Spotify as much as the next guy, but I always find time to put on a record!
1:50 the doc shows an AT-95e combo riding with so much VTF. Please contact that "Collector" and tell them to watch the simple UA-cam video on VTF adjustment. VInyl listening is a labor of love and requires knowledge to ensure your collection is viable in 5 years.
Awwww, gotta love Carl. His story at the end after the credits put a massive grin on my face. Lovely fella!
6:11- come on now, would you buy a Bruce Willis record if you stumbled onto the CD pressing of that at a yard sale for a dollar? Is it just because it's on vinyl that people will buy all types of music and crazy records that they would NEVER listen to on any other medium?
Bill Hannaford No I think it’s just a unique serendipitous experience.
Holy cow, I skipped most of this video until the interview at the 15:00 minute mark and guessed he was gonna pick Stevie Wonder.
John Smith What a guess!
If that old dude thinks concept albums are dead, he needs to be shown some prog metal. Vektor, Voivod, Ayreon, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Opeth etc all have made fantastic concept albums but you gotta dig a little bit deeper to find them. Can't really be mad at him though, he is so sweet and passionate about records :D
What record has everyone been playing in #quarantine?
Lots of John Prine records. Jayhawks: Smile.
Zamrock!
Love it
@@specificallybroad love the Doco!
@@xxxgetwreked Appreciate that! Thank-you
Is that an SL-23 in the beginning shot?
Heh. I just got to the Steve Kuota interview. It's his turntable, and yes, it looks to be a Technics SL-23...
Yeah it sure is! Love that turntable, it has that retro feel to it. He recently updated his turntable and speakers though!
That was the first "good" turntable I ever bought, back around 1875. My parents still have it. I had to replace the belt a few years ago...
Rob Wells I think it's so nice when turntables are passed down and taken care of! Wish my parents had one when I was younger! Please share the doco with your parents! Haha
Anyone know the name of the intro track???
Good documentary. Nice mix of ages. No girls?
Thanks mate! Yeah It would have been great to get a girl record collector! I was glad to have the mix of ages, as It shows a range of perspectives towards vinyl.
Trying to fight the urge to purge my thousands of records. This helped a bit. I can;t say I've played any of them in several years, d/t work and kids. I think I'll have a listen tonight and see if my feelings towards them have changed.
Old guy had some great records.
Sure does! And he owns them! Hard to say the same thing for MP3's or songs you have on Spotify...
LACHLAN PAULL FILMS I can relate! I’m a vinyl guy
I feel you!
Very enjoyable docu.
Thank-you Ales! Glad you enjoyed it!
How did you get Peter Clifton on this documentary - and where is the rest of the interview? :-)
Hi Mirco! A family friend of mine has known Peter for years and introduced me to him. Unfortunately I haven't posted the rest of the interview with him, just this final edit of the documentary. Hope you enjoyed it :)
I did. That guy must have a million interesting stories to tell.
He sure did! It was hard to cut the doco down because Peter had so many insightful things to say!
Maybe the intro could have been trimmed. That's a lot of repetitive images with no pay-off. A full minute of people digging in crates!
Really love this take on vinyl collectors!
Kelly Doyle thank you so much!
You can't roll a joint on an mp3.
Dude got a 100 records, WOWWWWW! LLS!
Crazy right!
I enjoyed your documentary -- a great piece of work.
Thanks mate! I really appreciate that!
@@specificallybroad hi any chance you could tell me the track at the start please.Cool Doc.Class.
Absolutely fantastic documentary, loved the views/experiences told by both young and old fans of vinyl. You just can't beat music on physical formats, Vinyls, Cassettes, CD's are far better than a digital file that evokes no feeling or memories etc.. 💜
OfficialAdamClarke Thank-you so much for the kind words! Digital has its perks but you’re right, there’s something special about physical formats!
@@specificallybroad Was a really good watch, you should be proud of yourself for capturing peoples love of vinyl in a loving way. I'll never stop buying vinyl, cassettes and CD's. A mate of mine has even just bought a reel to reel player haha! 💜
OfficialAdamClarke I found a lot of documentary’s focused on vinyls audio quality etc but I wanted to focus more on the people themselves and the experiences that collecting vinyl facilitated :)
@@specificallybroad it definately shows. My favourite was the man with the rolling stones case. Many people nowadays limit themselves to certain genres of music with digital downloads etc... It was nice to see such a mixed bag of genres in the guys vinyl collections. A bit like my own, I have everything from 70's Funk/Soul, Glam Rock to ABBA 💜
@@OfficialAdamClarke Yes, Peter was very passionate about his vinyl! I find that passion for music rare these days, perhaps because it's so easily accessible nowadays...
I would prefer a documentary with collectors who really are into it, with big and deep collctions, guys who have thousands of records and can really talk about there journey, here we have mostly people with a view records who talk about the romantic side of vinyl. Nice, but not so much about what the title promise, so thumbs down.
Majority of these collectors had thousands of records who were “really into it”.
Nice documentary, thanks for sharing. Always interested in this subject and seeing people’s collection with a story. Anyone know what that record at 6:23 Steve pulls out - looks pretty special with the colour comic art.
cool video. I like to do one like yours someday. great camera work. I just subscribed.
+Golden VinylSpin Thank-you for watching! I had a good time experimenting with camera angles this project. Glad you enjoyed it! Just keep shooting and you will learn a lot!
Great commentary! you told it like it is.
Cheers
Thanks Rob! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good to see some old farts collecting and not just hiptsters Ha!Cheers
Yeah exactly! I wanted to feature collectors of all ages in the doco!
Wow that's really well made!
LongPlayVinyl Thanks mate! Really appreciate that :)
Nice. Some good interviews worth watching here. Also, your intro record playing doesn't have a woolly mammoth stuck in the stylus - bonus.
WR3ND Thank-you! Yeah it's always cringe worthy when you see a stylus full of dust hahaha
Your shots and framing are really nice too. You have a good eye for it.
WR3ND Thanks man, I really appreciate that!
Very interesting to watch and listen to, cheers
Stony P Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it! Long live vinyl 👌
Very enjoyable doc. Thank you.
First record bought: The Beatles Blue Album 1967-1970 , bought at outdoor swap meet in 1978 and still own.
Most recent album purchased: Neil Young "Tonight's the Night" first pressing on ebay. Dec. 2022.......and a whole lot in between.
I also enjoy cassettes and cd's, also have tera-bites of digital music.
Life is a soundtrack.
i love mancini's song lujon! great video!!!
Fascinating and uplifting!
Looking through my vinyl collection recently I found an album which looked and played mint. It was 53 years old! The same day I went through my CD collection and discovered a disc which was less than 10 years old. The aluminium backed medium had stared to break down and it wouldn't play. That was an eye opener.
I use a record cleaning machine and can't over stress the importance of keeping your LPs clean. It preserves them and preserves the life of your stylus. Well worth the investment.
Long live vinyl! It's such a tangible treasure and for me is worth its weight in gold.
28:28 sums it up
This is an old video but how can you call yourself a collector if you have only 100 pcs in your collection?
tek00732882 A collection implies you’ve collected something and he’s collected 100 records I guess.
Appreciate the support from everyone. Never thought this would get 100k views 🙌
This Documentary is amazing !!!!!
I really appreciate that! Thank-you!
