- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained, and as voted for by everyone in the latest poll, today we’ll be exploring Bram Stoker's Dracula.
The 1992 Gothic horror directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, which is arranged in epistolary format; told through diaries, letters and telegrams written between the main characters.
Dracula is one of the most famous pieces of literature, with many of the characters simultaneously entering popular culture and remaining there as archetypal versions of their characters; from the infamous Count Dracula who is the quintessential vampire, to Abraham Van Helsing, the quintessential vampire hunter.
Starring Gary Oldman as Count Dracula in a captivating performance that is matched by the gravitas of Anthony Hopkins as Professor Abraham Van Helsing, and including a supporting cast of Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker, Winona Ryder as Mina Murray, Richard E. Grant as Dr Jack Seward, Cary Elwes as Lord Arthur Holmwood, Tom Waits as R. M. Renfield and Monica Belluci as one of Count Dracula's brides - it follows a group of friends connected by tragedy that team up to halt Dracula’s plan of taking over the world.

Gary Oldman doesn’t get enough credit for this classic. He was absolutely incredible.
He is one of the greatest actors of our time
@@filmcomicsexplained
Niyat can you do a video of another classic horror film The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro. Thank you.
He literally is revered for this performance. You’re just saying things bc you don’t hear about it actively in your daily life and it’s ignorant and simple
In a role of a lifetime.
He is the Mank
I love how many times Gary Oldman has been really able to get into a role and takes on the character he's playing. He's just an amazing actor, and makes everything he's in that much better.
I’ve seen so many movies over my life where sometimes it was years later, I’d found out, “THAT was Gary Oldman??” He totally transforms into another person.
My favorite to this day is still probably the professional
Fun fact: Gary Oldman is claustrophobic, and when he was being fitted for the bat suit prosthetics he wanted out of the suit as soon as possible.
That's funny, because the "bat suit" was his idea.
Incorrect. He had an allergic reaction to the material the suit was made of, probably the latex, so they had to use a body double.
Ahh, thank you, Doctor.
Who wouldn’t want out asap. That check covered his issue.
You're thinking of Michael Keaton in Batman. Get your facts straight
"Look what your god has done to me." Delivered so well. Man that part was awesome.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time! The cinematography is incredible, the cast superb, and the art direction is a combination of unique and gothic. Just an all around masterpiece.
Plus music and costumes. Incredible to this day!
This was my first Gary Oldman film. He was absolutely captivating. He doesn’t get enough recognition period. He is incredibly talented. Fun fact Gary Oldman has used a different voice for every character. You can get lost in the character and only stop and realize afterwards it was him. That is acting at its purest. You bring the character to life.
My favorite high school teacher loved this film so much, I had to watch it twice. Once in English class, and the other in Creative Writing. The class periods were only three apart, so that was a VERY redundant week. Good movie, though. He let me borrow the soundtrack CD in apology for making me watch it repeatedly, which I burned several copies of before returning it. :3 Awesome cast, aside from Keanu's weird accent. It's so strange to see Tom Waits in an acting role, but he does really well.
I love this movie. Francis Ford Coppola did an amazing job with this film. Gary Oldman was the highlight as Dracula and the gothic atmosphere is fully realized. Which is due to the amazing cinematography.
Great film to watch every Halloween 🎃
I absolutely loved Anthony Hopkins in this film 😁 this movie is pure art ❤️
So much better than Olivier!
This movie is a masterpiece. A lot of it's flaws actually make it more entertaining to watch without turning it into a joke.
I always loved this flick... guess since I was a kid and not a native English speaker... Keanu and Winona never bothered me....
They were going to make a monster universe with Anthony Hopkins reprising his role as Professor Abraham Van Helsing in a number of monster movies.
There was a lot of flaws in this. Particularly when Mina comes to see Lucy when she really fell sick, when Val Helsing is already there, If you look to the left of the shot when Mina is coming up the steps, you literally see Anthony Hopkins and the other actor just standing there until she got to the top, and they proceed with their lines, walking into the shot.
Still…. It’s still a fantastic film.
I am still curious about how they made that rat scene without CGI, this movie is ahead of its time and it is a visual masterpiece.
Edit: that part about Dracula refusing to turn Mina adds a new twist to an already great story.
It was acheaved by flim cuts they stacked stuffed rats and then made it fall then cut the film with them dumping a bucket of live rats and there you go
Are you serious 😂
@@starscream8032 OP could be young. Stop motion isn't something that's used a lot in modern movies.
They made a mannequin out of cheese and timed it so all the rats would finish eating the cheese simultaneously.
Something about films in the 90s is they are able to fit so much plot into their run length. If Dracula was made today it would probably have been over a 2 hour movie.
Sir. It is a 2:16 minute movie. My dad was 10 when this film came out, but it is one of my favorite films to watch with him.
@@Nga_BabayeI thought the same thing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No one going to mention that amazing 5 minute reading session? That was brilliantly read. I could listen to that for hours.
Was it me or did he even take on a different accent when he read it. This man is a treasure.
I'd buy an audio reading of the full novel!
@@keitrickmiller if i recall correctly in the novel Dr. van Helsing, being Dutch, has a very strong and noticeable accent.
Yes it was really good.
Mr. Burns from The Simpsons made a very convincing Bram Stoker's Dracula.
“Dad do you notice anything strange?
“Yeah his hairdo looks so queer”
“I heard that!!”
“It was the boy!”
“Welcome come in. Ahh fresh victims for my ever growing army of the undead 😈”
“Sir you have to let go of the button”
“Well son of a bi…”
I love it when Homer is driving the stake into him and Lisa says uh dad that's his crotch lmao
I'm going to admit this is a personal favourite version of Dracula.
With the immortal Bela Legosi (pun INTENDED) he is a monster in the guise of a mortal man.
Gary Oldmans depiction is the man behind the Monster, so full of fire, passion, cunning, charm, some sympathetic background but equally terrifying in his fury, intent & darkness!
The tragedy of Dracula's lost love sent him over the edge into horrendous paths & damning actions.
5:17, this is impressive imagery, as the used force perspective photography to make the book as large as they could, while the train the background was a miniature.
Just saw a 30th anniversary, 4k restoration of this in the cinema, first time I've seen it on the big screen since the original release. Works so much better on the big screen as it has so much visual style - Coppola packed it with homages to so many other films, clever use of colour schemes in lighting and costume, amazing score, it rewards a revisit. Some elements could almost be cheesy, but Oldman and Hopkins carry it.
I'm surprised how well this film holds up. Thank you for Halloween early.
No problem!
so glad that Francis Ford Coppola went with practical effects instead of cgi
Not much CGI to speak of at that time…🤙🏽
I’m so tired of CGI. It “jumped the shark” over a decade ago and it’s only getting more and more absurd.
Gary Oldman is a treasure!
Dude, you’re channel is becoming one of my favorites, Sir Anthony Hopkins is Such a Badass Van Helsing!
I love how well it works. This is an example of how a movie can turn out when people have a direction to follow. It's a true masterpiece.
LOVE THIS MOVIE!
Adrian Pasdar, Alec Baldwin, Ray Liotta, Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Cruise, Peter Weller, Aiden Quinn, Dermot Mulroney, Christian Slater, Rupert Everett, Willem Dafoe, Christopher Walken, Jason Patric, Costas Mandylor, Hart Bochner, Alan Rickman, Sting, Emilio Estevez, Tom Hanks, John Travolta, Rutger Hauer, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Jack Nicholson were considered for Dracula himself.
Rickman could have done it justice.
Damn.
Only Oldman was destined to give the world such an outstanding performance; that is etched forever in our hearts n minds.
He not only, convincingly, re-defined Dracula, but gave him redemption.
If Travolta, would have become Dracula, he would have changed Dance and Disco. The dance of the undead.
Anthony Hopkins wasn't the first choice to play Van Helsing, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant and Nicolas Cage were considered, and most of them were considered to play Dracula
I wouldn't have been able to take the movie seriously if it was Cage or pretty much any of them, well maybe Liam Neeson .
Only Oldman was destined to give the world such an outstanding performance; that is etched forever in our hearts n minds.
He not only, convincingly, re-defined Dracula, but gave him redemption.
@@RichterfanReborn89 you know nick cage is his son right
@@tonyp.bahama9368 doesn't mean anything to me, just cause your old man is a good actor / fit for the part , doesn't mean you are...
If that were true what's his name the son of Will Smith would be as big a deal as his daddy.
Eeew Nicolas Cage? Now that’s just gross 🤮
The director must’ve have initially wanted this to be a comedy!
The point when you read an excerpt of the novel was phenomenal 👌
This is an incredibly underrated movie. The cinematography and imagery conjured up by the lighting, angles, and clever but crude methods, bring together past and present cinema into a truly divine experience.
Nobody says its underrated.
@@kaleoandros25 the critics and studio audiences did
From someone who is a big fan of the novel. I love this film! Gary Oldman gave one of the greatest performances of all time.
I have to say Ireland has probably the best writers and poets in the world with Bram Stoker being another example.
middle-east would say otherwise
Every continent births brilliance.
His armor design for this movie was epic
Yeah. Its now on display at one of Francis Ford Coppola's wineries!
@@filmcomicsexplained I've been there, I live just south of Napa Valley. Rubicon Estate Winery...it's called Inglenook now.
Awesome!
@@filmcomicsexplained i watched the wolf man 2010 and noticed the music is similar and found out it has the same composer 😀
I saw this in the theaters and enjoyed it immensely, but I must confess I remember The Simpsons parody more than the film. Oh, and anyone who hasn't read the novel, DO SO. You won't be disappointed.
This film shows how John Wick became the boogeyman and how Hannibal became the cannibal.
And why the Byers are haunted by the supernatural.
@@ptolemeeselenion1542 Also what the Merovingian(Vlad/dracula) and persephone was doing during the nightmare program from the matrix ..
Monica Bellucii was one of dracula's wives and is the Merovingian's wife in the matrix'
And that Johnathan Harker was one of the "abnomalies" that neo becomes in the matrix
How commissioner Gordon inspired batman
How John became the Wick
By far my favorite interpretation of Dracula in film. Gary Oldman killed it in the role and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing was a perfect bit of casting.
Nowadays praise is rightfully on Christian Bale for his performance acting, but I think Gary Oldman definitely deserves some praise in this regard, he's just brilliant in this role, and sells each facet of Dracula's appearance: Vlad the Impaler but romantic and youthful and aggressive, elderly fragile count, exuberant sexy prince, absolute towering bat-monster, and his in-between as vampiric but still human-looking.
I must have been watching your videos for at least a few years now and the quality just keeps getting better
Thank you kindly!
Personally I wouldn't mind seeing a Dracula that actually had a dragon motif more so than what we got in that movie with Luke Evans and Charles Dance
Isn't he a dragon in that Van Helsing movie with Hackman and Bekinsale?
One of the greatest movies out there. Also done with almost only practical effects!
Gary Oldman gave us one of the most memorable renditions of Dracula. The first time I saw him lick that straight razor I was totaly repulsed.
That was the most masterful scene in a movie that was full of great scenes.
That scene and the scenes with Dracula's shadow doing different things than dracula himself truly mesmerized me as a 15 yr old kid
@@PhilthCollinz that scared the shit out of me as a kid 😂
That was a *great* scene, not repulsive. It was also totally improvised by Oldman and done on the spur of the moment. It wasn't written into the script. Oldman was drunk and just decided to do it.
@@El_Ophelia Cool! Thanks for that!
One of my favorite movies of all time. It will never get old. And the fact that it’s fairly accurate to the original text helps immensely and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing makes me laugh all the time
Side note: Great cast and I personally think Van Helsing and Quincy are the best characters. And Monica is the only bride necessary in my opinion HA
This movie is in itself a petri dish for the sexification of vampires. Bela lugosi was alluring, he drew the eyes and held them every time he was on screen. But Oldman is out here dropping panties in the theatre seats.
Your vocal performance was great during the reading of that excerpt from the book.
This was one of the first, for lack of better word, adult novels I ever read, way back in middle school (grade 6 or 7). Up until then, I'd mostly read children's books or young teen novels like Animorphs. With it's unusual format and more adult themes, it certainly left an impression on my young mind.
Dude! The vocal impression of Van Helsing was second to none! I mean, I don't know exactly how he would have sounded, but to rival Sir Anthony Hopkins himself, I'd say you have done an amazing job! Bravo, my friend. Bra-freaking-vo!
We all just gonna overlook Niyat's reading as if it wasn't FIRE.
Thanks Cody haha
This film came out in 1992 but the resolution, effects, costumes and set pieces makes it look like it came in the 60s, which is fucking EPIC.
Hands down the best adaptation of Dracula ever made. Not only is it faithful to the book, it is BETTER than the book! And yes, I've read Dracula.
Easily one of the best ensemble casts ever.
I couldn't agree more.
Absolute perfection and cinematic masterpiece...and I did not even resort to spamming this vid like a certain Mustache Guy.
4:00, " The Blood Is The Life, And It Shall Be Mine!" Thus, Dracula Damned his soul for all eternity.
Still the best vampire movie in history. Second is the lost boys and third is interview with the vampire etc 👍. Then you can get into Blade and Underworld.
Agreed
Agreed! But I do like Frank Langella's portrayal too. Plus I must confess to a soft spot for "Love At First Bite" with George Hamilton. Renfield was an absolute hoot in that version!
@@lesleygiles8924 Those are good for comedy of course 👍
@@lesleygiles8924 Nothing wrong with that
Loved this movie as a kid.
From this movie, I will use this single line in my wedding vows: "I have crossed oceans of time to find you".
If the internet existed early as Dracula's era, he wouldn't be needing to get out of his castle to learn everything and adapt. He knows that knowledge is power.
One of the best Dracula movies ever made.
It’s fun to read Stoker and then read “The Dracula Tapes”
By Fred Saberhagen, which is a chapter by chapter response by Dracula to what the others wrote about him.
It’s also fun to read Dracula out loud, pronouncing all of the dialogue phonetically as written. If you do it carefully, you will imitate the accents of each character!
And I can’t resist saying: “Dracula, Dude!!” :-)
You should also do a video on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
This is probably the best Dracula movie ever.
The classic Dracula movie and the 1992 movie are good as a masterpiece
In the book he has a mustache not just in his younger form, but in his older form as well. Other than that this film is fantastic.
The best introduction to a movie / character EVER! Pure cinematic art.
Also Anthony Hopkins Plays the leading preist in the start of the movie. To understand it simply: Mina is a re-incarnation of Elizabeta and Van Helsing is the re-incarnation of preist who cursed Dracula to become a vampire.
That Van Helsing reading/impression was amazing dude! I still quote that character in his voice to this day.
“Ya, we cut off her head and cut out her heart and now she is at peace!”
Still my favorite interpretation of the story alongside Lugosi's.
Thank you for this, as always 🙏
Back in high school, we put on a play of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I played Johnathan Harker, it was so much fun.
This is amazing!
I really liked Anthony Hopkins Van Helsing. His snarkiness and sarcasm was great.
I can't wait to see this classic on the big screen in two weeks
Van Helsing: Eat. Feast. You need your strength for the dark days ahead. Mina.
Mina: Doctor?
Van Helsing: Ja?
Mina: How did Lucy die?
Van Helsing: Well-
Mina: Was she in great pain?
Van Helsing: Ja, she was in great pain. Then we cut off her head and drove a stake into her heart and burned it and then she found peace.
Harker: DOCTOR! Please.
Van Helsing: So, Mr. Harker, I must now ask you as your doctor a sensitive question. During your infidelity with those creatures, those demonic women, did you for one instant taste of their blood?
Harker: No.
Van Helsing: No?
Harker: No.
Van Helsing: Good! Then you have not infected your blood with the terrible disease that destroyed poor Lucy.
Harker: Doctor, you must understand. I doubted everything, even my mind. I was impotent with fear.
Van Helsing: I know.
Harker: But, sir, I know where the bastard sleeps. I brought him there to Carfax Abbey.
Van Helsing: Vampires do exist, and this one we fight, this one we face, has the strength of 20 or more people, and you can testify to that, Mr. Harker. But he can also control the meaner things of life: the bat, the rodent, the wolf. He can appear as mist, as vapor, as fog, and vanish at will. Now, all these things Dracula can do, but he is not free. He must rest in the sacred dirt of his homeland to regain his evil power, and it is here that you must find him and destroy him utterly.
19:56 In the novel Renfield dies trying to stop Dracula turning Mina into a vampire.
Greatest Vampire Film Ever.
The fun fact that this movie is also Canon and also part of the Castlevania universe. And everytime I watch it I would immediately start playing Castlevania right after watching the movie. It's also connected towards another Castlevania game.
My friends and I snuck into this in 92'. We were 14. I just turned 45. WTF. Classic, beautiful film 31 years later ❤
fun fact. Bram Stokers Dracula is canon to the Castlevania series
Stolkers Dracula or Ford Coppola addition of Dracula? Vlad was never Dracula to Bram Stolker.
It was really fun to listen to you have fun with this, Niyat! great video, thanks.
You did a great job reading that text. Perfection.
Another movie i've never heard of but am going to watch, thank you as always!
When Van Helsing throws the heads into the gorge it's just surreal and eerie. Love that part. Great video Brother!
Outstanding as always excellent video many thanks for yet another fantastic video 🙂👍👍👍
Thanks for watching SOUL REAVER 83!
@@filmcomicsexplained You're welcome thanks for another excellent video!🙂👍
I have been a fan of this movie since it came out. I think Gary Oldham and Anthony Hopkins did a fantastic job.
Never watched this or intend to watch it thanks to you explaining it. After seeing how close Dracula Dead and Loving It followed this movie..I'll just rewatch it and it's comedic gold.
6:31, they spoofed this in The Simpsons Halloween Special IV in the final segment called Bart Simpson's Dracula, while the entire episode is based on The Night Gallery by Rod Serrling.
My dude with the clutch explained video of my favorite movie
Dynamite!!! What a fantastic review of one of my all time favorite movies. I remember seeing this one in the movies while living in NYC on the upper east side. What a great experience. Not too many Dracula adaptations are even entertaining. In my opinion this one is the best
I liked how you read the lines with a dutch accent it sounded good
Quincy is an American living in London in hopes of courting Lucy. Did it not once occur to anyone besides me that Harker might be an American as well, living in London due to his profession? I mean, I never once read in the book that clearly states Harker was born and bred in London! So I’m able to forgive Keanu for his lack of accent due to the fact Harker hasn’t been there long enough to pick it up!
Im seriously going mad that ive never heard or seen this movie now knowing of it im going to watch it... looks like an awesome movie even if its older
Great video! I hesitate to ask...but can you please do a deep dive and explain Primer, please.
Yes absolutely, it’s on the list homie!
A childhood favorite, it's just incredible ❤️
As flawed as it was at times, and despite Keanu Reeves miscasting (and I LOVE Keanu), this is still a fantastic movie. They haven't made a single Dracula movie since this one worth a crap, really.
yessss Niyat you tackled and tackled well my all-time favorite film!
and I LOVED your voice acting with the reading of the passage!
Very well performed! I too am impressed.
Amazing 🤩
Gary Oldman was the best Dracula ever!!!!
I was 13, my friend was 13, we saw this in theaters together....I'll never forget him saying "2 children for Dracula" and nobody cared
I loved this film growing up as a kid and still do if you have the chance to watch it in its original sound give yourself a treat and do it because the HD increases the dialogue volume so much you loose the creepy atmosphere of Dracula's castle and other scenes because many have intentional spooky sounds that made characters look over their shoulders are gone. Yet surprisingly this film is one of the only faithful renditions of Dracula and that is because Nosferatu being inspired by Dracula but not holding any rights had to be different in many ways. You compare that to Universal's Dracula which pulled mainly from the Broadway play of the early 20th century I believe and given the success of that film others followed suit. So any time we get a film adaptation of the book it is always a treat. But I have read the book and many of the more monstrous portions of the film are from Coppola's own mind, while the romantic sub plot between Dracula and Mina was someone looking at the history and world Dracula lived in and saw him as a possibility tragic character. A great film non the less and one I don't feel gets enough love as a top 10 vampire film.
"I have crossed oceans of time to find you"
This takes me back to my childhood.
can we all have lend our sympathies for Keanu Reeves , in both this and the Matrix Reloaded , he has had to kiss Monica Bellucci, I don't know how he does it, the sacrifices that man has made.
I was surprised to hear not many people liked this movie. Idk why. Its a cool film for Halloween
Most of the backlash comes from Reeves' occasionally stilted acting and his and Winona's terrible accents. Not their best performances, but you can tell (at least imo you can) that they tried. Neither of them are great at accents. Personally, I don't feel that it was bad enough to ruin the entire film though. The effort is clearly there. Others clearly disagree 🤷🏻♀️
The 80's and 90's were odd times for films because critics wanted thought provoking films but people wanted all kinds of other things. It's funny because many films torn apart by critics are cult classics or were films that despite negative reviews still pulled down big money.
Personally I like it, though I choose to see it as Coppola's take in Stokers tale rather than a definite 100% faithful adaptation. A thing that bothers me though is the dynamic between Dracula and Mina, because in the novel it carries some heavy undertones, implying that Dracula drinking her blood is him basically sexually assaulting her; to downplay/ignore that predatory side of his character in favour of making him a tragic creature ultimately acting out of love feels a little... icky.
Another reminder that the Academy owns an Oscar to Gary Olmand after so many great movies
He won an Oscar in 2018 lol
never seen it but honestly love it lol thank you
This is such a classic.
