I only remember that name because me and my friends used to make fun of him, but yeah you're right. He is doing a lot better. Buzzfeed really did a number on him, lol
The worst thing is that isn’t even the first time Adam’s content has been taken advantage of, when I was still following him it came out that a popular Sundance movie stole from one of Adam’s horror comics verbatim. Obviously this situation is different because Dear David is under Buzzfeed not Adam himself, but I still feel bad for the poor guy, he can’t seem to catch a break. Yeah, his art got so much better instead of the same copy-paste stuff. Not quite my kind of thing but I respect him a lot for growing so much as an artist.
Adam Ellis, the artist who originally made the Dear David ARG (which I personally think is really cool and completely different from this mess) was actually a comic artist at buzzfeed when he started the ARG. Buzzfeed announced back in 2018 that they wanted to make a movie out of the story, but that was so long ago and I know that any relationship Adam had with Buzzfeed has definitely soured since then
The problem is an ARG is fun because of the interactivity and the versimillitude granted by having them posted in the real world web. Making a cinematically shot film out of it robs an ARG of what made it so special in the first place. And the one time a horror movie DID try to pull an interactive internet stunt, it sucked. I work at a buzzfeed office in NYC, it's essentially set up like a wework. Not much really goes on either, we have one huge room which is basically the floor below to host meetings and the main floor is a bunch of cubicles and like a random kitchen with snacks and beer in the middle of the room.
*ALAS, Ryan and Shane were not that great, either.* They (their producers, actually) have done poor research, so the show was political propaganda in major cases.
When you said they were making dear David into a movie my jaw actually dropped. I remember my classmate showing me the thread in secondary school. I’m graduating uni this year 😭
There's "scraping the bottom of the barrel"... And then there's "aggressively breaking through the bottom of the barrel to feed on the dirt beneath". Buzzfeed has done just that with this project.
I gave to give it to them, though. The idea of a horror movie based off of Twitter in general would be genuinely horrifying. Even being on the platform for more than 5 minutes is terrifying, especially when you click on a Twitter thread and scroll for more than a few seconds.
If you look at Adam Ellis' art now, he's made SO much improvement since he quit BuzzFeed, he does his own short horror stories and they're actually quite good! So either BuzzFeed stole this idea/content from an artist that's quit and been open about hating the company OR Adam Ellis did work with them on this and, despite proving he's an adept storyteller, BuzzFeed fumbled the bag. Either way... Sucks, man. It's a shame people are still shitting on him, his art is really really good now :/
People dunk on his opinions more than anything lol. Like the time he said that Jordan Peele is the greatest horror movie director ever and the man himself told him to stop dickriding
If I had a nickel for every horror movie based on an internet fad that was long dead by the time the trailer came out, I'd have one for this, one for Slender Man, and an endless amount for all the movies and short films based on that Momo hoax.
I remember being bored in history class in high school and seeing people do buzzfeed quizzes to pass the time. That’s the only time I’ve been on buzzfeed sense like 2017
Dear David was actually a decent unfiction story, I'm kinda disappointed that the film is being made by Buzzfeed but in all honesty, I'm not sure why I expected otherwise Edit: from Charlie's description, it sounds like they changed the story drastically. For one, David wasn't a twitter bot, he was a ghost who would answer any question as long as you started with "Dear David". The catch is, you're limited to two questions a night otherwise David becomes upset, which was the entire base for the original story. I'd def recommend checking the original unfiction series before watching this garbage anyday
@bighillcraft oh shit my bad, UA-cam was bugging out for me. As I said, though, Dear Daniel is certified as real by the author of it because, as we know, people wouldn't make stuff you as that's wrong.
That David ghost thing is garbage, the whole only ask 2 questions thing was literally broken after a few days. After that, David got "angry" and started dropping books and other boring ghost shit.
I remember this one user from askreddit posted 'In the future, when buzzfeed makes a "only '10s kids will remember" list, what will be on it?' And a commenter told 'Buzzfeed'.
I remember hearing about that thread in a compilation of ghosts caught on camera, waaaaaaay back then. Seeing this again awoke some deeply buried memories, they are more late to this than a jeriatric turtle after getting kneecapped.
I feel like this is a direct result of the writers strike. I refuse to believe this was written by an actual person, it has to be an AI written script. These studios gotta start paying their writers asap
Or the comic book artist started production in 2018, was half way done, COVID happened, then resumed production, reboot production/new script, writers strike happens last year, now this is all that's left. One man show essentially
I saw *Buzzfeed studios* and actually yelled out “AHH!!” irl. Can’t remember the last time a jumpscare legitimately caught me off guard like that. I’m being dead-serious right now too.
To be fair, Dear David was a fun ARG/unfiction story. When it was first coming out it was a pretty interesting story and I still think its pretty neat. After seeing the trailer I'm a bit disappointed in how the story seems to have been changed, and how David looks compared to the photos in the original story. It scared the shit out of me as a kid so I'm a little sad to see what happened to it but as long as they had fun making it then whatever. The original pictures of David were 100x scarier than the whole trailer sadly I suggest watching Reignbot's old video's going over the original thread if anyone is interested in the original story.
When this story ramped up in popularity I was a young teenager and the way the latin american youtuber Dross related the story of Dear David really gave me chills, that I believed it was true even tough I was aware of being a made up thing. I genuinely think what Buzzfeed is doing is just a snore fest with the predictable and horrendous horror formula to be honest, a 100% flop.
This is why having good writers is important, as well as why studios always have crunches, you need to crunch to meet deadlines so that they don't lose public interest and drop out of trends
They haven't been working on this consistently for the 5+ years since it was last popular, so unless they reach a level of making people work so hard it releases in 2017 I don't see how '80-100hr work weeks are actually a good thing' crunch comes into it. It's not that they fumbled the ball because they weren't putting enough work on their employees, it's that they didn't care about it until now. After all, a property can make money forever, right? /s
I remember hearing about dear David. I remember thinking it was creepy, albeit clearly fake. I've always found child ghosts absolutely terrifying so back then I thought it was creepy. This is way too late for it. The iron isn't just cold, it's frozen under tons of ice
Charlie mentioning the FFX blitzball tournament was such a nostalgic memory for me. I still remember Wacca kicking everyone’s asses by throwing a ball at them
I somewhat liked the videos around that thread back in the day... When I first saw the BuzzFeed studios logo I was just kind of inquisitively thinking to myself, not leaning one way or another. But now knowing what its about I'm very much afraid...
Adam has some really good/creepy comics and I remember hearing some stuff way back when about this becoming a movie but I genuinely didn't think anything would come to fruition
Oh yeah, I forgot to say that there is a real hunting that a guy has photos of. That are extremely close to that image that’s drawn up there. If you do some digging, you can find the haunting somewhere on UA-cam, but it might not be going by the same name regardless, there’s gonna be somebody who points it out.
imagine working for a company and after u leave because of ownership disputes of ur free time creative endeavors. they then make a movie about 1 of the things u were disputing and they try to assassinate ur character with that movie. thats how u get the dear david movie.
The original twitter thread was written by a buzzfeed employee while he was working there, thats why Buzzfeed is plastered all over the movie and why they made it on the first place. Im not sure how much Adam was involved with the movie production but he currently makes great horror comics worth a check.
I cannot believe they actually released this. Years ago I listened to something by Reignbot covering the full story, and it was one of the goofiest Twitter creepypastas ever. When they announced the movie, everyone basically laughed at it for being a blatant and misguided cashgrab. I really didn't think they would actually go and finish it. I'm stunned.
Shane and Ryan already did a are you scared video on the dear David 😂 and it was so good they made it scary, they are doing so good without buzzfeed I’m so happy they got their own thing now
i remember when this all happened 😭😭 i was 13 and it had me n my entire friend group in a chokehold since we were those kids that was rlly into horror stuff😭 not like those school shooter type people, but we were huge IT fans, junji ito, danganronpa, etc. so we were just kinda cringe ..
Seeing that jumpscare made tears stream down my cheek as my heart jumped out my chest, I showed it to my younger sister and she died on the stop due to a heart attack
and we ALL know Buzzfeed doesn’t have enough to make this as a theater release.. that means Twitter most likely forked over money along with other investors thinking this was a good idea 🤣
i remember i was a big fan of the twitter thread during my arg phase and thinking of how we never really got a ending to it.. but now we have a movie that looks terrible so i think i’m content with no ending now
I actually remember the Dear David story as a kid. It was a decent story for something on Twitter, so seeing it become a movie by BuzzFeed is both sad but interesting as well. Most likely not watching it and forgetting about it a second time, and it’s not even accurate to the Dear David story.
What sucks is Adam Ellis, the original creator of this story has no involvement. Because if he did, it mightve actually came out alright considering his other horror content like his recent (like past 3 years) of horror comics are genuinely well made and nuanced. Honestly I'd prefer half of those as a film tbh.
The fact that buzzfeed wrote a self insert fanfiction and tried to pass it off as a horror movie is actually ridiculous

I do not use Reddit so I would not know, and Meta I have no clue what that is. Most of my time is spent in the real world working.

The fact that charlie doesn't understand what an ARG is and that the dear david thread was one hurts me deep down
I work at a buzzfeed office in NYC, it's essentially set up like a wework. Not much really goes on either, we have one huge room which is basically the floor below to host meetings and the main floor is a bunch of cubicles and like a random kitchen with snacks and beer in the middle of the room.
i love Charlies unique way to describe a video for 9 minutes and still make it more entertaining the the actual movie
I'm invested by what my favourite sex position says about my favourite Disney princess honestly..

*ALAS, Ryan and Shane were not that great, either.*
They (their producers, actually) have done poor research, so the show was political propaganda in major cases.

Buzzfeed doomed their movie from the start by not casting the most famous Hunger Games actor to have ever graced the earth with his presence.

I honestly can’t believe BuzzFeed still exists. I would’ve thought they went out of business in 2015.
That’s the true horror story. How they’re still around like a zombie
2015 was peak buzzfeed popularity??
Off topic. But I didn't know where else to ask you. Can you please make a video on your opinion on the Carlee Russell story?
I gave to give it to them, though. The idea of a horror movie based off of Twitter in general would be genuinely horrifying. Even being on the platform for more than 5 minutes is terrifying, especially when you click on a Twitter thread and scroll for more than a few seconds.
Twitter as a literal Portal into hell and you are sent there after you dox someone. Pay me Hollywood
His art is not really really good 💀 it's generic af

Dear David was actually a decent unfiction story, I'm kinda disappointed that the film is being made by Buzzfeed but in all honesty, I'm not sure why I expected otherwise
Edit: from Charlie's description, it sounds like they changed the story drastically. For one, David wasn't a twitter bot, he was a ghost who would answer any question as long as you started with "Dear David". The catch is, you're limited to two questions a night otherwise David becomes upset, which was the entire base for the original story. I'd def recommend checking the original unfiction series before watching this garbage anyday
wtf does "unfiction" mean
@bighillcraft it's real, authentic, and verified as real by numerous reputable sources.
@@MaybeOrangeJuice that is "non-fiction", obviously the Dear David story isnt non-fiction
I remember this one user from askreddit posted 'In the future, when buzzfeed makes a "only '10s kids will remember" list, what will be on it?'
And a commenter told 'Buzzfeed'.
Omg Charlie Just Commented On My Video 😭

AI could write better than this lol
I saw *Buzzfeed studios* and actually yelled out “AHH!!” irl. Can’t remember the last time a jumpscare legitimately caught me off guard like that. I’m being dead-serious right now too.
Buzzfeed out here giving nightmares
I remember hearing this on a horror story video, hearing that buzzfeed of all things was making a movie hit me like a truck :○
"Most Buzzfeed shit imaginable" basically sums up the entire horror movie basically...
The original pictures of David were 100x scarier than the whole trailer sadly
I suggest watching Reignbot's old video's going over the original thread if anyone is interested in the original story.
BuzzFeed is that one friend that peaked in high school then fell off straight after
That large dome thing in Vegas is the perfect time to show off Blitz Ball.
oh man I remember when he was updating that thread, time really flies
When this story ramped up in popularity I was a young teenager and the way the latin american youtuber Dross related the story of Dear David really gave me chills, that I believed it was true even tough I was aware of being a made up thing. I genuinely think what Buzzfeed is doing is just a snore fest with the predictable and horrendous horror formula to be honest, a 100% flop.
Dross da 🐐
Un genio el dross
This is why having good writers is important, as well as why studios always have crunches, you need to crunch to meet deadlines so that they don't lose public interest and drop out of trends
They haven't been working on this consistently for the 5+ years since it was last popular, so unless they reach a level of making people work so hard it releases in 2017 I don't see how '80-100hr work weeks are actually a good thing' crunch comes into it.
It's not that they fumbled the ball because they weren't putting enough work on their employees, it's that they didn't care about it until now.
After all, a property can make money forever, right? /s
I wish Hollywood would actually have good writers but they dont exist these days.
you actually just reminded me that i still have the buzzfeed app on my phone. its just been sitting there for years and i keep forgetting to delete it
Every single "pity" dollar you spend in a situation like this is exactly why things like this keep happening. Stop seeing things you don't want to see
It's not pity dollars, it's hate watching
Except no one cares enough about buzzfeed to hate watch, this isn't Velma
I remember hearing about dear David. I remember thinking it was creepy, albeit clearly fake. I've always found child ghosts absolutely terrifying so back then I thought it was creepy. This is way too late for it. The iron isn't just cold, it's frozen under tons of ice
That jump scare made me cried in the middle of a pizza hut

Seeing the Buzzfeed studio logo flash my screen was legitimately more horrifying than the entirety of this movie will probably be.
Omg Charlie Just Commented On My Video 😭
I cannot believe they actually released this. Years ago I listened to something by Reignbot covering the full story, and it was one of the goofiest Twitter creepypastas ever. When they announced the movie, everyone basically laughed at it for being a blatant and misguided cashgrab. I really didn't think they would actually go and finish it. I'm stunned.
Shane and Ryan already did a are you scared video on the dear David 😂 and it was so good they made it scary, they are doing so good without buzzfeed I’m so happy they got their own thing now
The same happened in my country, a story from Twitter got produced into movie lol and it's only the beginning for many more to come

and we ALL know Buzzfeed doesn’t have enough to make this as a theater release.. that means Twitter most likely forked over money along with other investors thinking this was a good idea 🤣
The artist is Adam Tots isn't it?
@@BonavireI think so. It’s Adam something 😂
i remember i was a big fan of the twitter thread during my arg phase and thinking of how we never really got a ending to it.. but now we have a movie that looks terrible so i think i’m content with no ending now
The only way it could sell a few tickets would be to see how a Twitter thread to a movie would look like
Ohhhhh, i remember this story! It was very popular long ago but no one remembers it now, buzzfeed is setting them selves for failure
If they’re making a horror film about a Twitter thread, they should make a horror film about Charlie scaring his audience with his spooky jumpscares

What sucks is Adam Ellis, the original creator of this story has no involvement. Because if he did, it mightve actually came out alright considering his other horror content like his recent (like past 3 years) of horror comics are genuinely well made and nuanced. Honestly I'd prefer half of those as a film tbh.
