The Creature and Portrait Sculptures of Mike Hill
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- We visit the workshop of Mike Hill, a renowned portrait sculptor who specializes in recreating the classic horror monsters of Hollywood (and the actors who embodied them). Mike's full-body sculptures of characters like Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, and even Christopher Reeve's Superman are startlingly lifelike. We chat with Mike about his process, look at a work-in-progress, discuss what he tries to achieve with his portraits.

That Frankenstein's monster is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I wish there were a National Horror Museum where this stuff could be displayed.
DevilMaskMedia try the Count Orlocks Horror Museum in Salem Mass, they gave I believe 60 sculptures many in action poses
There was the Guillermo del toro museum with pieces featured in several of his movies, not sure if it went to other countries, but I was able to take the opportunity and visit it in Jalisco, mexico
Mike Hill's work is amazing! I am a big fan . There should be a museum of just his figures.
Mike Hill is one of the finest people I have ever had contact with. He is not only the most talented, but also the most supportive great guy around. These are just beautiful pieces of art that in my opinion can not be outdone
We mortals are but shadows and dust. That bust of Oliver Reed is absolutely beautiful :)
I LOVE that version of Frankenstein's creature - so much closer to Shelley's description than you normally see.
Mr. Hill's choice of subject matter and its execution are supreme. His recent work of a life size recreation of the classic Aurorra model kit of The Wolfman emphasizing Lon Chaney Jr.'s appearance is a masterpiece. He is always challenging himself as an artist and seems to get better with each work even though that is hard to believe when contemplating previous works. I can't wait to see what he does next.
I never tire of looking at Mike Hill's work . The Ollie Reed is perfection.
The time and devotion on all of these pieces is incredible!
I love how Norm comes alive in these interviews. He's almost a different person compared to the Still Untitled podcast videos. There's so much more expression in his voice and body language.
I thought I was the only one that noticed that...
juans daone He has to act up a bit to not seem like an asshole to those he is interviewing.
Jack Sevil
He turns into a total kid!!.. I love it!!
I really like how he talked about how hard it is as an artist to see how good your work is, as well as how hard it is to see your mistakes. I don't pretend to be a great artist, but the things I do, whenever I show them to someone and their response is "Wow, that's really awesome!" And all i'm thinking "No, there are all these mistakes, and this could be better here, and that is wrong there." Which is a hard thing to get used to.
My god. That is incredibly realistic. Wow.
I can't even...just amazing craftmanship. Insane details.
I'd never seen this presenter before I saw him with Adam Savage on UA-cam. He's great. He has a gift to get the most out of his subjects he interviews by putting them at ease. He has a great empathy with their work, describes the details without making himself look like a smartass and without patronising his subjects, and grandstands their skills in very 'soft sell', humble way. I'm sure he has great creative skills of his own but he also has a real knack with people which makes for fascinating, insightful interviews. Good stuff
Oh that would be Norm, he's a journalist who started Tested dot com together with the floating disembodied head... Will Smith is the name, redheaded guy, well he had a body back then, he only became a floating head later. Then Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters joined them. Then Jamie never showed up and was eventually crossed away from the credits, then Will went on to lead some kind of VR software engineering company, and also became known as "the face of VR" in Internet meme culture, because of that first show where they tried on Oculus Rift on Tested and his face just showed all kinds of grimaces of astonishment, so the screen captures went viral, but Will is still present as disembodied head on Tested, he just can't be there in person. Yeah of course Tested since grew a bit, they've got Frank Ippolito doing semi-regular shows, a sculptor and propmaker, they've got now Simone from Sweden, a hobby roboticist and comedian.
Anyway, Norm's skills are pretty much entirely journalistic in nature, but carried forth by innate curiosity. He's not always good at it, he tends to interrupt interviewees when he gets overexcited, which isn't very good or professional at all, but he's learning and getting better. When he does anything on the show, and he does often assist one of the hands-on-people, Frank, Adam, Simone, and he actually has terrible fine motor skills and lacks the particular way craftsmen hold the work and tools to avoid stabbing themselves or ruining the work, so he definitely doesn't have that much experience with it, much klutzier than anyone else on the show. But that's also a kind of encouragement: if Norm can do it, chances are, people at home can too.
The nature of the outlet certainly changed, it went from originally being intended as a tech comedy kind of outlet where two guys have fun with random pieces of often borderline useless technology, or sometimes technology abuse, to more pop art and craft centric probably because Adam is just that much fun, but i must say it's perhaps impressive that Norm can carry a decent enough journalistic duty in something that isn't quite aligned with his existing experience or prior interests.
Mike Hill is a genius. His sculpts are so real. I met Oliver Reed and that look on Hill's sculpture is the business! Oliver Reed lives again.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Mike Hill at pass MonsterPalooza conventions. He's so approachable and friendly. He's is a true master of his art. If anyone finds them self in L.A. this coming March 27-29 check out the convention. I'm sure Mike will there and have an exhibit.
Seen many before, no less astonishing this time. So many man-hours expended for such a young appearing fellow!
My heart jumped when Frankenstein's finger twitched.
Heh, I also wanted him to touch it some more.

The Oliver Reed sculpture was fantastic, looked like it was going to jump up and say, "Just kidding, I'm real!"
the eyes are truly brilliant, so well done, that Oliver Reed head looks alive as if its listening to him
Thank you for having me on!
I kept waiting for Ollie's head to speak....amazing.
Love hearing you prefer to work with water based clay!! That's encouragement.

Still got a Predator resin kit made by Mike Hill that I picked up back in the nineties. Can't believe that he went from making garage kits to where he is now.

Amazing! Hyper realism is just so fascinating!
I am friends with his son and he also used to live around the corner from my family before he moved to LA

Shane MacDonald and the Wolfman is scared of old Oliver Reed
What an amazing job.
MY GOD that Oliver Reed sculpture are gorgeous.
Those are so life-like. That's amazing.
Christopher Reeve's sculpture is my favorite.
Oliver Reed was maddogging him the entire time. Brutal.
Dr. Franks monster and Proximo are really into the conversation. Wolfman just looks horrified at Norm :D that's some intense hyper realism. Good show!
Is that meant to be the monster dead or some stage in the creation? I'm presuming dead. Interesting idea for a sculpture. I like the concept of taking existing characters and showing them in new thought provoking ways. It feels like it adds something genuine to the story without being crass like a new sequel would probably be. It goes beyond being Boris Karloff in makeup into the fantasy of what if the monster was real.
He said its dead.
Looked like zombie jesus to me.
This was great!! Mike Hill is such a talent. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed.
That Oliver Reed is incredibly realistic.
What a great talent, a true artist
This is so awe-inspiring.
Amazing Oliver Reed Sculpture, extraordinary UK talent in La ! As a matter of fact I've seen most of your monsters reproduced million of times all over the internet, t-shirts, coffee mugs, buttons, tattoos, drawings, paintings, etc. How does this make you feel, is this ok with you, Mike?
Great interview, all the right questions asked, but maybe shake the guys hand at the end when he was being such a dedicated interview partner.
8:30 be like water my friend. B. Lee the legend lives !!
OLLIE REED - That is a MEGA likeness, this sculptor has alien skills
Forget wax museums this is way cooler and from what little I seen more accurate and I agree with the person who commented saying this stuff should be put on display somewhere.
Damn, this dude has some crazy talent.
Thanks all and Thank you TESTED.
Incredible artwork...
his advice about anatomy really also applies to artwork in general. artist should definitely study anatomy so when they paint their characters they will look dynamic.
I have 3 Curse of the Werewolf models by Mike along with a couple of Lugosi Draculas. Mike is the only sculptor to capture Christopher Lee. I have a Mummy and Dracula bust that he did.
