  • In this follow up tutorial for our Bride of BITY construction, we cover the Hydrocal mold process. This is a great, simple way to make a mold for casting silicone. Here's what we used:

    I don't do moulds, I never have, and don't plan to in the near future. I do however find these videos very entertaining. It's interesting to see the process. Perhaps I'll try it some time.

      Sure you don't. We're all here just checking this out...for a friend.

    Great Video!
    What's the differences between Hydrocal and UltraCal 30? (I know that UltraCal 30 is better for baking foam latex, and Hydrocal absorbs water better for latex masks, but does anyone have the Pros and Cons of both?)?

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому +8

      Ultracal 30 is harder and slightly stronger, but it is also heavier and doesn't have the same working properties as hydrocal. Both would work for this process, but I prefer Hydrocal for its ease of use in this type of mold. I also like the lighter mold in the casting process.

      Ultracal is stronger and has a longer working time; UC 30, 90 and etc. speaks to the varied types. It's wise to include an acrylic bonder in the mix for either stones, as that can extend the life and durability of the mold. Also, Untracal is an accurate gypsum, in that its distortion is minimal, while Hydrocal expands between 7 and 12%, making it difficult to add layers or make prosthetic molds with. Hydrocal is great for making life casts, because the expansion helps to mitigate the shrinkage that occurs when you make foam latex prosthetics or props. The current silicone, gelatins or urethane casting materials are usually more accurate and so, expanded hydrocal molds aren't as necessary.

    my only question is why did you choose the clay instead of steel sheets at doing the mold walls ?

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому +6

      Metal shims are good for some applications. I chose clay for this on as it is easier to key and follow an irregular parting line.

    Hi, this is a really good tutorial thankyou! Would you suggest this type of mould for creature type prosthetics with lots of detail? Or would it be best to stick to a brush on silicone mould?

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому +1

      Prosthetic molds are best made with a rigid material, such as Hydrocal, Ultracal 30, or tooling resin. The exception, of course, are flat molds. Those are best cast in Gel-25 or 73-15.

      Brick In The Yard Mold Supply oh really? I didn't know that thank you! I thought hydrocal would be more skeptical to breaking compared to silicone moulds?

    • @ellieread3537
      @ellieread3537 7 років тому

      As in breaking/cracking in the smaller details, not the actual mould.

      It just depends on the way the mold is being used as to what the best option is. Each material has its pros and cons.

    Any alternatives for mold wax and releasing the wall? In the video, Vasoline isnt a good option. Suggestions?

      Most hardware stores will have a paste wax like Minwax that will work.

    How do you process out your wand washing water?
    let it sit and siphon off the op water and bag waste the sediment?

    What is this hydrocal, and what is his composition?

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому +7

      Hydrocal is a very hard plaster, a gypsum cement.

    When you lay down the clay model flat to make the wall, wouldn't the weight of the model distort the sculpted detail of the back of the head

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому

      Not if you are careful. Monster Clay is fairly firm so you won't deform it unless you put unnecessary pressure on it.

    Just noticed she has her mouth slightly open. I can hardly imagine it would look natural like this if you sculpted that after casting. So if that was sculpted; WOOOH! But if the model did that while being cast....WOOH! How would that work?

    • @bitymoldsupply
      @bitymoldsupply  7 років тому +2

      Can't take credit for that. The model did open her mouth slightly for the cast. We used Platsil Gel-25 for the lifecast. Although it doesn't taste like bubble gum, it isn't bad to have in your mouth.

      That is amazing. I would expect the gel to influence the shape of a relaxed lip. Pretty amazing result indeed. And good to know. Whats next? Open eye casting?
