as good as music gets !! bowie !! this still give me shivers 40+ plus years later.String arrangements by the late great Mick Ronson (his first attempt at strings...not too shabby). Piano by Rick Wakeman. thanks for this !
This shit soars. The lyrics...the lyrics are full of wonderful angst and, "the veils down, you can't lie to us any more" forecasting. This talks to the whole cauldron that allowed Bowie to transform, become a force of unreserved honesty and fearlessness. Nobody will ever be as innovative because he already broke those walls down.
Heard Bowie do this live on His "Reality" tour. When it started I couldn't believe he was reaching back to such a deep cut from his early album "Hunky Dory". It was so great to hear him do it live!
You're picking some awesome ones! I am happy to see someone really getting to know his work, not just the commercial stuff. It was always exciting to see what his next incarnation would be in his next album.
A very deep cut off Hunky Dory....love this song. Bowie only started playing this live in the 2000's....this is like Bewley Brothers or Sweet Thing......very deep cuts that are fantastic! Mick Ronson did the string arrangement.
I just now saw this, wanted to mention that Dinosaur Jr did a pretty good version this. It starts with the riff from the beginning of another Bowie song I love, Andy Warhol.
Alot of imagery in this song. Alester Crowley and the Golden Dawn, Esoteric Magic etc.. Bowie was really into that stuff and wrote about it in a few songs, especially Width of a Circle and this one. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was also really big into Crowley. Ozzy Osbourne Solo Band wrote an entire song about Crowley called Mr. Crowley you should check out!
What was this? 70? Are you kidding me? This got me and my friends meeting at night. Slipping out our bedroom windows and creating teenage societies trying to figure out, where do we go from here? It obliterated any possibility of doing what our parents did or trusting them. My Dad bought me the Stones, Yes, The Doors, but he never bought me a Bowie album.
This is from Hunky Dory. A terrific album.Very good for late night before sleep. The hit from this album is Life on Mars. Very Nice, but this and other songs are better.
Love this song....early Bowie, from Hunky Dory which has some very personal songs that are not "singles"....like this one. Tre, you get Bowie. He is my favorite. Always changing, but with a point of view that is interesting.
Ooh, Tre, someday I’m going to get around to sending you another list, and it will almost probably definitely have this one on it, BUT, it will be the live version David performed at his 50th birthday party. He invited Robert Smith of The Cure to join him onstage and duet with him. It’s soooo good! Someday soon....
@@mikecappadocia5959 I agree, the intimacy of the acoustic demo version really highlights the esoteric lyrics. Both versions are great though and express an unusual occult inclination that was in vouge at the time.
One of bowies most moving songs powerful thought provoking, a genius especially his 70s stuff.
It's always a "yes" to Bowie for me.

Best reaction!!!! Elegant is a grand word to describe that man!!
A Deep Cut...one of the deepest, Bowie allowed listeners to ask questions that were hidden under normal conciousness.
Deep. I love how open minded to music you are. Bowie is my fav.
this is a hella chill Bowie song
Bowie . Rock elite. He was the Diamond Dog.
Deep David! Have not heard for sometime. Thanks for bringing it back around. David & Mick. Mars?
Just genius.

For sure " Hunky dory " is the Best Bowie album, and from far .... Brilliant song !!!!!
Listen to his Bewley Brothers, another poetic song from the same era...

#1 on my list
super réaction ! Une chanson élégante et mystique .

David Bowie was not only ahead of his time,he is STILL ahead.
A unique one-off.
A national treasure and a London boy,one of our own.
Himmler's sacred realm of dream reality.. ...
beautiful extravagant music!
fantastic choice, well done !
David Bowie "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)"
You must be a huge Bowie fan to request that......agree!
@@wpollock1 Hahaha! Guess I am, will you do it? Pleeease? ;)) Love what you're doing and your open mind by the way, keep it up.

off his best album
hunky dory?
There's a great demo version of this somewhere on youtube.
Not really, it sounds weak compered to this version.
@@nalatreborrenoclaf9648 no, it's fine.

The demo version is even better !
Lyrics explore interests such as cocaine, the occult and the nazism.
It's about Hitler's thoughts in the bunker, as he faces up to death.
The demo version is VASTLY superior and gorgeous.
Rock 'n Roll Suicide next please
One of Bowie's most cryptic/pretentious lyrics. Feel free to interpret them...
Piano is nice, though. Played by Rick Wakeman of Yes fame.
Pretentious🙄
