Wait wait wait.... "Jews" is a slur??? As a Jew (sorry, do I need to say "Jewish person"?) that's news to me.
It's all about context. "He's a Jew" definitely sounds worse from some people than if they said "He is a Jewish person" or "He is a person of Jewish descent." But it's definitely not true to say that the word "Jew" is a slur - and DL is obviously correct that this guy was hella high, so there's not really a way to hear his comment as if it were spoken with malice.

You could also just say, "He is Jewish" which is fine. The problem with calling someone "a Jew" is that "Jew" also has negative reference to someone being stingy. So it's hard to distinguish the difference which can make referring to someone as "a Jew" seem offensive.

It is okay to call me "a Jew"! As a response above notes, it's about connotation. If you say, truthfully, that someone is "a Jew" but you spit it like an insult, then clearly you mean it as an insult because you are anti-Semitic. But if you say it literally any other way and the person to whom you are referring is actually Jewish, then you are fine. And if you say it about someone but they are not actually Jewish, then you're just wrong.
