Was looking for quick explanation about saturation and distortion. Explained a lot of things. Didn't even realized it's geared more towards film/game audio until you show the engine example. I'd say this is better than many music tutorials
Your No-Nonsense series make me uderstand more about all these plugin Thank you ! Talk about automation what's the situation will you use it? (I know this question is too big to answer, but you mention at the end of video haha so I am curious how will you use automation on sound design!!)
That is a good question. I use automation to give movement to my sounds so that nothing really stays "stagnant". Things like engines accelerate and decelerate and never really stays "stagnant" at exactly 2000RPM hence you can have a lot of character in a car recording. Things like Pads, Drones, Trailer Effects, Roomtones, SciFi Sound Designs can really benefit from movement to help add character to the sounds. Using an EQ to give motion to a sound as it moves further away from you or boosting/cutting high end to evolve a drone. In the Saturation Video I automate the drive knob to have engines sound bigger when they fly by or when the camera is pointed more towards the exhaust.
How to make my sounds sound strong and bigger? For example, days ago I recorded some mechanics sounds and when I tried to make it similar to a sound from a trailer library I couldn't make it sounds like that. My sound sounded like the child of that massive sound from the Library. I don't know what they do and I would like to know how to make that. Is amazing how they make a simple click from a mouse sounds like a Titan!
Hey Davies. Most of it starts from a good source sample. When we say things are "big" sounding it usually means full spectrum. If you are trying to recreate a sound try putting an EQ on the sound source and soloing the low, low mid, mid, high mid, high, and ultra high end to see what your sound is missing and either layer samples that accommodate that frequency space or apply processing that accentuates that space in the frequency spectrum. Plugins "should" come after the core sound is there.
However, I have one more question, what is your opinion about adding ressinance bass? I just found a video from the channel you share and the sound designer uses it and that plugin made the sound sound massive.
Depends on how it is used really. Can easily be overdone and can clash with the rest of your mix. I frequently use sub harmonic generators to help add some extra weight to my sounds. Ya know kick it in the arse a bit
this video could have been much better without the annoying\in your face background music while giving examples man, at least keep the audio levels in check i end up having to keep punching my volume buttons while trying to listen to you
Hey Onat, 100% agree with you. This was actually a common complaint that I have since addressed in future videos. I'm fairly new to the video creation space so I was still and am still learning every video I put out how to make them better for everyone. Thank you for your feedback.
"no nonsense" but yet there is music playing over the top of the audio examples and some random underwater clip both completely irrelevant and out of context. Not a fan thanks.
Hey Rhysmop, I'm fairly new to the UA-cam game this video was put out before I just dropped music from my videos all together. The music was kinda a "hide my voice cause I don't like it kinda thing. Thank you for your feedback though.
