This was a great follow up. So you've defined how to use this tool. Now bring it together with a mix that uses distortion curves + subtractive EQ (cuts) to add flavor to a mix versus just using EQ (boosts and cuts)... maybe those differences aren't apropos and a different set of distortion vs. X is more relevant. But I think you can squeeze one more video out of this that focuses on bringing all that knowledge forward.

Man. These videos are so good and hit all the right buttons for me. It's just such an engineer thing though. It won't help most people mix an album or pick out the right gear like other videos that most people would be searching for but it is still an invaluable tool. Even for non engineers like myself who just really want to understand the tools at their disposal to hopefully make something different to someone making new hardware we can all learn something from this. Demand makes it much harder to make this into a successful UA-cam series and pushes stuff like this back into a space where, as a creative in the studio space or even someone developing music tech, you have to get lucky enough to meet someone who can understand and help you with this kind of knowledge. This is the type of understanding and knowledge that is severely lacking on the internet especially in such an educational format.

This video was A LOT MORE USEFUL than your highly technical video where you went off on tangents about the Fourier transform, without really showing functions... I've just been using distortion plug-ins without paying attention to the saturation curves, but this is straight forward enough that it's worth experimenting with! THANKS FOR THIS!! GOOD WORK!!
These videos are amazing. So well explained and comprehensive, with fantastic hands-on examples. Hope you come back soon with some more content dude! ❤
Your videos are immense, mate. Hope you return with more. There are loads of techniques I’ve been using for years in mixing that I don’t understand the science behind. The theory of synthesis and exploring the different types would be bloody brilliant. Hope you’re good!
Great video! I clicked this randomly from my youtube suggestions... I guess the algorithm works sometimes, eh? So many things clicked while watching this video and terminology (like Asymmetric vs symmetric curves) that I've heard but never really bothered to understand is now clear to me.
Bro that’s the answer we’ve been looking for ! Wish I discovered your channel earlier ! What you ve said on ur tuts took us ages to figure out … thanks so much !!
Amazing! These are the videos I need, not the ones I deserve. Don't know if this is too big a topic but maybe you could explore loudness. I make electronic music (and I think you do too). Old engineers say crushing the master is stupid and DJ´s say its necessary. I've done nole tests on limiters and have to say the result is scary awful but I still think there's something really satisfying about a square master with kick drums smoothly transitioning to sub. Dan Worrall has some awesome videos on why crushing the master is stupid, but I think it might be interesting for someone with more sensitivity towards electronic music to explore the areas of grey. There's no right answer but I'm still interested in your two cents. Anyway thanks for the videos!!!
What a fantastic cap to a phenomenal series of videos. I’d love to see more examples of what we should be listening for. Reverb would make a really great topic. Especially if you approach it the same way you did with saturation.
Love all your content man - really cool and enlightening stuff! I think a natural progression would be a look at compression - maybe inc. the various styles of hardware emulating compressors that are around and what is best for different functions
Ok, this is my new favorite channel on the internet. No offence, but usually when I see a music youtuber your age talking about technical side of things, I criiiiiiinge so much. In 80% of the cases, they just try to target producers for views by passing on any disillusion they currently have about mixing. Your videos are complete opposite of that. In fact, aside from music as a side hobby I worked for over a decade in broadcast indutry on various technical postitions. Not only I can fact-check 80% of things you say, but the rest 20% is new shit I just learned from you. And given the fact the rest is spot on, I'm absolutely sure the new knowledge is based in reality. There are three channels really worth looking into when it comes to mixing I think. Old Andi Vax videos, all Dan Worrall stuff ... and yours. Thank you. ❤(And pls don't give up.)
thanks so much for the series of EQ and clipping (also comp lol) you get me to the door to really understanding what I am mixing (still have lots more to work on...) I think it helps 90% of mixing skills looking forward to you talk about the width and depth for sound! thanks a lot!
That was a science lesson. Your series of videos is excellent. You've clearly studied audio engineering to an exceptional level and present it very well. The only disconnect I have here, is how does this relate to the real world? If you're using a saturation plugin with a graph type input, then you can easily see what type of distortion is being applied. But if you're using one that doesn't (like Decapitator or Tape sims for example), how do you know what type of distortion that's using? The only thing we can go on is what it sounds like as we try things. How do you know if the plugin you're using is symmetrical or asymmetrical?............Hang on a minute, you're not going to suggest we read the manual are you? That's sacrilege!
I demoed the difference between symmetric and asymmetric at 14:22. It's pretty easy to to build up an ear for the differences. Experimenting is really the quickest way to figure it out, but it doesn't take long to hear the differences in tone and once you figure it out you can apply that to any plugin where the curve isn't shown.
I rarely comment on videos. I must say, you are doing a really good job. I’ve been watching music production videos for 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone combine the science with the history, with practical implications in quite the way you have. What program are you using for the graphs and the graph animation?
What topic should I cover now?
Techniques on adding depth to a mix would be nice , maybe proper methods of gain staging.
anything that would help me make loud mixes that sounds dynamic and not squished would be awesome!
Could you do a Full mixing project? Or maybe a video about recordings or vocals
This was a great follow up. So you've defined how to use this tool.
Please come back dude, your vids are seriously by far the best ive seen on youtube
Great video! I clicked this randomly from my youtube suggestions... I guess the algorithm works sometimes, eh? So many things clicked while watching this video and terminology (like Asymmetric vs symmetric curves) that I've heard but never really bothered to understand is now clear to me.
Just Wanted to Let You Know That Your Explanation Really Helps! Thanks a Lot! 😊
Your channel is so underrated bro... Keep it up cause your videos are real hidden gems!
I paid thousands for music production courses and learned more from you in an hour
I bet this guy scored some crazy job and that's why he hasn't dropped a video in a while! He's gotta be wicked smart...
Please come back dude. Just found your channel & would love some more content!
Bro that’s the answer we’ve been looking for ! Wish I discovered your channel earlier ! What you ve said on ur tuts took us ages to figure out … thanks so much !!
This stuff is addictive! I don’t do music production, but this is must-have content.
insane amount of knowledge here, given to us for free in a very processable manner. incredible job
Another killer video from you dude! Your video quality is getting better and better each time too, keep up the amazing work man! :D
Your content is pure gold. Wish you would come back with vengeance. Like how technical you get, i really miss that with most channels
Its actually absurd how good your videos are
Love all your content man - really cool and enlightening stuff!
Old Andi Vax videos, all Dan Worrall stuff ... and yours. Thank you. ❤(And pls don't give up.)
thanks so much for the series of EQ and clipping (also comp lol)
you get me to the door to really understanding what I am mixing (still have lots more to work on...)
I think it helps 90% of mixing skills
looking forward to you talk about the width and depth for sound! thanks a lot!
Really, really hope this guy comes back lol
Dude I just watched all your videos and they are amazing, would be so glad to see more
Your videos are more informative than the paid course I had! Thanks!
I specifically look your channel up every month or 2 just in case you uploaded again 😢
I dont often comment on youtube videos, but man, your videos are awsome
Dude, your videos are so high-quality, I'm jealous lol
I love how you use clickbaity titles and then actually deliver..! good job thanks
Man, your videos are by far the best ones out there, you have a talent teach me stuff i tought i could and would never learn!
I rarely comment on videos. I must say, you are doing a really good job. I’ve been watching music production videos for 10 years and I’ve never seen anyone combine the science with the history, with practical implications in quite the way you have. What program are you using for the graphs and the graph animation?
