What if the opossum purchased the sandwich itself? I've heard of crows doing the same thing. They see humans get food for currency, they find something they think would be worth a sandwich, they order, trade, and walk out the door to find a place to eat.

Opossums are sweethearts though. They may hiss and put on a show, but they're pretty much just cowards. They make great pets too. c:

@@sephthesatanist6558 that’s what they want you to think! They pretend to be cowards so you drop your guard and they can eat your face. I always lock my door to make sure the enormous opossums don’t stand up on their hind legs, open my door, and take over my home. I know they’d leave me with all the bills.
Really though, the idea of an opossum eating a sandwich the way humans do is terrifying, no matter how sweet they may truly be.

The opossum eating the sandwich reminds me of something that happened on a trip I took a few months ago. We were walking through a park when a crow stole someone's bag of Doritos, took the whole bag to a high up place, and then just started eating the chips out of the bag one by one. That crow made my day.

It resonated with me. Years ago my sister's collie mix dog got hit by a rattler! If sis hadn't been off work that day, the pooch would have died! Sis rushed her to the vet, and $300 of antivenin later, the dog recovered. Her long slender nose swelled up like a bulldog. She made a total recovery, lived many more years.

In 1993 I got the chance to go to Hong Kong. I went with my dad sister and aunt. The second day there, we went on the subway. It was hot and coming from england I was not use to the weather. The car was packed and we were standing. The next thing I know I'm waking up on the floor. Yes I passed out. My dad helped me up. Everyone on the seats in the car had stood up to offer me their seat. I got to see a stingray give birth.
Some dude was fishing out on the ocean and caught this very pregnant stingray. He immediately pulled her over to the shore to unhook her and check if she’s fine. Of course we and some other people gathered to look at this random fat stingray, and then she started giving birth. If I remember, she gave birth to about 12 babies. Got to touch a couple of the little sea bees and watched them swim back out to sea with the mom. My mom and dad got a video of it. I will never forget that day, it was amazing.

He was talking to himself, opened his eyes and looked at me and said "You can finally meet (brothers name)! He and (dad) are here, Charlene!" I told my husband he wouldn't last the night, so the entire family stayed over, and I was right. That was the start of covid, so we still haven't had a funeral or memorial.

As a teenager, I was wan in army cadets. There would be various events throughout the year where we would visit actual military bases and do stuff. I do not remember what stuff we were doing in this particular visit, but that is not important. What was important was the ducks. On this day, a duck was walking through the base with a trail of duckling following behind. Everyone stopped what they were doing to watch the ducklings. Every soldier in the area, privates, NCO's, even a passing captain stopped to watch them. No one was immune. The enthralling power of duckling is absolute. None can resist.
It was highly amusing and the ducklings, of coarse, were super cute.

My friend was looking after my dog for a bit over a week because I had to travel about 1,800km away to sort out a few things. One day one of my friend’s neighbours walked up to her front door to ask if he could park one of his cars out the front of her house for a couple of days, my dog (who is deaf by the way) immediately took up a defensive stance between the front door and my friend’s daughter who was napping on the lounge. My dog loves children and I genuinely believe she would kill someone if she thought they were going to attack a child. She has also rounded up an eastern brown snake, came up to me to show me the other two dogs had run off (someone didn’t close the gate so my dog snitched on the other two dogs for walking off) she is extremely well behaved even if she doesn’t listen to a single word I say 😂 (yes, that’s a deaf joke).

In the early days of cell phones (like pre flip phones), I was out shopping with my dad and apparently was in charge of his cell phone (being around 10 at the time, I didn’t realize this). So, we get to the next destination in our shopping adventure (I forget the details but believe we were Xmas shopping), and he has to call someone, so he asks me where his phone is. Again, these were the primitive pre flip-phone days, so only he and my mother had a phone. I say I don’t know...I thought he had it. He said he thought I had it. We both panic and realize we left it back at the first shop we were at, that closed in 15-20 minutes. In a panic, we rush back there, and are able to grab it, but not before one of the workers there said that someone had called it and they picked up (God knows why) to talk to whoever was calling that phone, and it took a bit to figure out who they had talked to and stuff and tell them the situation (also pre Bluetooth, so it was annoying to do so), but we got it all sorted.
Other than answering someone’s phone for no reason, the workers did a pretty good job of holding onto it until we got back, and said they were going to stay a bit late “just in case” from what I recall, so overall, I’d give them a 8/10 when it comes to the “going out of your way/being nice” of the situation.
Here’s the plot twist: this happened in the US, and while some would argue that because it happened in Texas, around 18-20 years ago, don’t expect it to happen in the rest of the country at all, especially nowadays, I’ll just say that sometimes, people surprise you, so don’t just assume you’re SOL if something happens. It could actually work out in the end.

So about that backpack story...I had something similar in the US.
my friends and I were at an anime con for a weekend in a well-known city. It was the last day of the con, right went the con was closing. My one friend and I were catching the least little shuttle bus from the con back to a stop by our hotel. This odd guy kept trying to talk to us on and bus and we were tired. We got off the bus to walk the 3 blocks to our hotel, I have a bag of merch in on hand and went to get the keycard from my backpack to open up a side door for the hotel....when I realized my bag was GONE.
The bag with my wallet, my ID, debit card, $200 some in cash, and what hurt most, my camera with ALL my pictures from the whole weekend! The money and cards and could be canceled...but that camera had memories on it now.
We RAN back to the con( it wasn't crazy far but still a bit of a walk) hoping I left it there. Lost and found had nothing. They tried to call the shuttle bussed but they couldn't get ahead of them. They checked the ones they could though. We called the bus company and didn't hear back.
I had to call my mom (Thankfully I dropped my phone in the bag of merch so I had that at least) and had to tell her in tears what happened. We were staying in the town one more day to relax and chill after con..I was so upset that I lost my bag, mostly for the camera over everything else since the memories and pictures on it can't be replaced. We spent our last day in the city making the most of it, my friends spotted me cash since they knew I was good for it.
2 days after I got home we got a thing in the email saying I needed to come to the post office with some picture ID to claim a package....I went and there it was. my bag. My camera, my wallet EVERYTHING. Since my license was in my wallet whoever found my bag had my address and MAILED IT BAD TO ME. Not one cent was missing from my wallet either! ( I know because at cone I write down the money I have and keep track of what I spend so I knew what should be in the bag) This saint who found my bad paid $40 to mail it express back to me.
I ended up sending a thank you card to the return address, along with the money for the shipping plus a bit extra. I can't even tell you how much this meant to me. To this day I think back fondly on the kind soul who returned my bag.
(if anyone is wondering I'm like 90% sure I left it on the shuttle bus. I was tired and I think I just assumed it was my back, but was tired and trying to get away from the weird guy and just didn't notice the straps well off since it was a light string bag.)
To the kind saint who mailed my bag back, thankyou.

The first happened when I was little on vacation with my parents in Florida. My mom bought some hummingbird knick knacks from a gift shop, and paid by check because that was still a common thing at the time. Apparently she left them on the counter at the cashier and completely forgot about them. We only discovered what had happened after we had been home in Michigan for a few days, because the employees at the shop decided to mail them to the address that was on her check.
The second time happened to me more recently.
I went on a vacation with friends in New York. A few hours after leaving, I realized that I had left my tablet in the hotel room. Going back for it would have added at least 4 hours to our trip so I'm very grateful that when I called the hotel, the staff was willing to ship it to my home. I had to pay the shipping cost, but the hotel staff did not charge anything for their services.

There are definitely still some nice people in America too. That story with the backpack reminded me of when we left our good beach towels(super thick and soft, really nice and really expensive) in the dryer at a KOA. We called the camp ground a week later when we realized they were missing and they not only still had them, but they shipped them back to us free of charge.

I disagree that an American wouldn't have sent the bag back. Maybe I just live in a different part of the US than you, but generally people have been pretty nice about those sort of things.

14:44 this reminded me of a story my dad's friend told me. His sister had a dog and it was bitten by a snake, she was so sad and laid the dog on it's bed and it didn't move at all, but she didn't want to bury the dog. She left the lifeless dog there for 3 days and then on the fourth day she almost got a heart attack cause the dog was alive and jumped happily when it saw her.

I love oppossums! I used to do wildlife control, removing wild animals from people's houses, yards, etc (always humane and with live traps- I never killed anything but rats). Oppossums have an immunity to pit viper venom and there has never been a documented case of an oppossum with rabies (their body temperature is too low for the virus to incubate). They also eat snakes and rodents as well. They're the only north American marsupial as well. Random oppossum facts, but the more you know I guess.

Ever since 2017, I've been playing a lot of Destiny 2. I've played all of the dlcs, ran through almost all of the raids, and even tried to go flawless in Trials of Osiris once or twice. One day, I was walking home from a nearby Popeye's joint, and I was in the middle of crossing the street. At the corner of my eye, I noticed a car moving towards me, and the driver didn't even attempt to slow down. I literally performed a Marksman Dodge to avoid getting hit, and managed to reach the sidewalk as that car passed by

The walk story reminds me of a friend of mine who brought homemade chocolate truffles to one of our cross country meets. We couldn’t finish them all, and she didn’t want to bring the leftovers home, so she just stood on the sidewalk outside the park and asked everyone who passed if they wanted a truffle. Another time, this little old man stopped me on my way home from school and asked me to call his son for him, to tell him that he was downstairs outside his apartment waiting for him. I did (the son sounded very confused about why a random girl was calling to tell him this), and as a reward, the old man gave me a can of caffeine free Diet Coke. People say New York City is full of crazy people, but sometimes it’s also full of nice people who give out truffles and soda.

As a Canadian, I have to disagree about Americans. I've had so many great dealings with complete strangers in the US, but this is the best:
I was using a car dolly to bring a car home that I had bought in Florida. (No rust). The dolly broke in a parking lot on a Sunday afternoon of a long weekend in a small town I Pennsylvania. My dad and I walked around the town looking for anything that might be open. When we got back to the RV, there were several lifted trucks with sweet quads covered in mud. I thought, why not? I asked the group, and sure enough, one had a portable welder and agreed to come back with it after he unloaded his 4 wheeler. He didn't live close. He returned three hours later, with his family, and proceeded to do an amazing job repairing our car dolly. We tried to pay him, and eventually had to stuff a few hundred into his wife's purse when he wasn't looking.
He spent hours driving, and using expensive tools, and we had to sneak them the money.
There are amazing people everywhere, but the jerks get all the publicity.
Don't know you name, but thanks again for helping us almost 2 decades ago.

I have a story of my own. Every year (except last year due to COVID) I go to a Christian summer camp that lasts a week. 2 years ago, I was put in a cabin with some girls I knew from the year prior. That year, all the girls collectively decidided that they were gonna take off there shirts and just sit in their bras while in the cabin. It was reasonable since it was the middle of summer, but I didn't do it because I was self conscious. For some reason, though, one night almost all the girls in that cabin who weren't wearing shirts decided to shout at the top of their lungs "WE ARE SHIRTLESS" and they were about to march around the cabin, too, when the counselors, who had left for five minutes, came back. Those girls got into some pretty big trouble for that stunt.

I had a coworker that was informed by the police that he had been under surveillance for a month.
He bumped in to an old friend from elementary school. They had grown apart in junior high because the friend fell in with some bad influences and started skipping school and vandalizing stuff. When they met they had not seen eachother in over a decade. So they had a casual conversation and catch up a bit and then they leave. My coworker got the call from the police about a month after that. It turns out that the bad influences his friend got involved put the friend on a very criminal path. And as a result he was caught up in a huge investigation and planned bust by the police. Apparently, among other things, the guy had been selling weapons.
When they guy met my coworker the police thought he was involved and started tailing and surveilling him as well. But to their surprise my coworker was just a random schmuck who worked tech support. He didn't even have a parking ticket. They were super confused about how he fit in to all of this since my coworker didn't contact the guy again at any point. But after a while one cop made the connection that they were probably just old friends who bumped in to eachother at a really inopportune time (for my coworker). They looked in to the guys and my coworkers past and realized they went to school together.
So they called my coworker up and had a conversation about it and they asked some clarifying questions and then asked him to never contact the guy again. I am guessing they kept watch on him for a bit after that to see how he reacted.
Also, like two months or so after that the guy was shot dead in a night club. Not by the cops, but by some members of a gang that apparently hated him so much they killed him publicly. He clearly made some enemies.

I go to college at a small liberal arts school in NY, I'm a grad student here now but this happened when I was a freshman. Leading up to the 2016 election, a lot of people I knew were saying that if Trump won the election, they were going to flee the country and go to Canada or somewhere. Everyone was saying it and acting all "I'm serious about it,", but nobody actually was going to do it, like when a kid is mad at his parents and says "I'm gonna run away" and then 5 minutes later asks if he can help cook dinner.
I was headed to a conference in Indianapolis the day after Election Day, and on the night of the election, my friends at the time asked me in a group chat if I wanted to grab dinner. I told them I couldn't and sent them a picture of my suitcase with some clothes in it. I told them about the conference the week before, but I guess they forgot, so I decided to pull a prank on them. They said "what's the bag for?" So I replied, "if Trump wins, I'm moving to Canada." They asked "how are you going to do that?" I said, "simple, I'm going West, then I'm going North." They laughed, said "good luck" and got food without me while I kept packing.
The next morning, I was en route to Indianapolis (we left at 6am) and I found out my 8am class was cancelled. My friends asked if I wanted to get breakfast, so I told them I couldn't. Why? Because I was going West and then going North. I sent them a snapchat from Eerie, Pennsylvania. Same thing happened a few hours later; they asked to get lunch, I told them I couldn't because I was going West and then going North, and sent a snapchat from Dayton, Ohio. Once I was finally in Indianapolis at the conference I was going to, I had them 100% convinced I was really fleeing the country.
Best prank I ever pulled, until my fake album release that I announced on April Fool's Day last week.

I haven't noticed them soon enough and I had nowhere to escape, they were running so fast! Before I had a chance to react, Brutus positioned himself between me and those dogs and leapt on them when they were in his reach. He was able to hold them long enough for my neighbour to come to our rescue. He was fine after visit to the vet.
