First Chinese principal dancer in NYC Ballet history hopes to inspire more Asian performers

Chun Wai Chan is the first Chinese principal dancer in New York City Ballet’s 74-year history. The 30-year-old who was born in China’s southern Guangdong province, says he still finds it “unbelievable” each time he hears his name announced as the US troupe’s top-ranked performer. Chan hopes his experience in one of the foremost dance companies in the world will inspire more Asians to pursue professional ballet careers. “Asian male dancers are definitely able to dance,” he said, “because I have been dancing forever.”

Now that's a powerful mindset that has gotten him to the pinnacle of his career. Gratitude, hard work and resilience.

I'm very proud of you. I'm chinese Indonesian. My sister used to dance ballet, now my daughter just start to join ballet class.
I remember being able to perform in the same show as him when I was around 10yr/o and I've been a fan of his ever since. It's honestly so inspiring seeing Chun Wei grow and gain recognition as a Chinese dancer. He is such a talented, humble, and positive person. Keep being an inspiration to us all! :)

I think it helps that he is from a province that has lots of contact with the west. There or Shanghai - they're not as opposed to self-expression as the rest of PRC. The vast majority of the country really looks down on dancing - by anyone, but especially by boys (although with their VPNs they watch others sing and dance and love it! And we'll see what this generation is able to do!) - Fate was on his side there - and we are all so very fortunate to be able to share in his talent. I hope that his story moves even just a few back home. Thank you!
That's actually not entirely accurate. Some of the best dancers and some of the best dance programs in China are in places other than Guangdong and Shanghai.

I love what he said about not being able to change his race, but he could improve his skill so that there would no longer be an excuse to discriminate against him. I wish it wasn’t that way but it’s what usually makes minorities like us stronger and better than normal.

There are several Ballet companies throughout Asia. Japanese and Korean that aren't new...1964 and 1962, respectively. They aren't old compared to 74 years...but they still have Asian Principal dancers.
