Hey. I appreciate you sharing this information. The Kinetico dealer in my area is a JOKE. I have had a terrible experience with them. I refuse to call them for any issue I may have. I am a licensed plumber. I can master any utility unit I come across. Your video was what I needed. I look forward to gaining more knowledge from your other videos. You are right to the fact people should have the Right to Repair what they own. Thank you from a dirt Dirty Vet.
This is a great video, and wonderful explanation. Makes repairing my Kinetico Water Softener so easy. Thank you kindly for taking the time to record these videos. I feel the same.... that the companies should not keep the repair information under lock and key. I would be totally shut down, if I was not able to do my own repairs on my unit, because the closest dealer is 150 miles away. Again, thank you so kindly and may God richly bless you for your thoughtfulness, kindness, and truth!
Kasey, I just stumbled onto this video today after working on my K5 unit. My Kinetico softener unit has not been cycling for months and I simply by-passed the unit until I could take it to my dealer (saving the $85.00 on in-home service). Your video has renewed my confidence to troubleshoot this unit myself. Thank you for your series of videos on Kinetico units. I will watch them all before I continue with my repair.
SO, NOW THANKS TO YOU, I KNOW IT'S NOT METERING. Kinetico will be here AGAIN today. Several unsuccessful attempts to fix and $$$ for no results. Where does the vacuum come from? I'll review this troubleshooting video I am so thankful for. I'd love to see more! You have been a huge help so far. Just using the word METERING got a fast response.
thank you for posting this video. it helps to trouble shoot my Kinetico softener. I recently experience that the flash cycle stuck for days. my local water agency notify me on my unusual water usage, which prompted me to check.
Thank you. You are correct Kinetico should supply more technical info on their units, especially since their local "experts" have such poor customer service.
Hi Kasey. I also want to thank you for providing this valuable information for those of us who are not in a position to pay exorbitant plumber fees for simple fixes. I determined that the wheel is engaging, but I need to know for step 2 if there should be sound coming from the tank and a trickling of water through the hose when I move the wheel to check the valve pressure. When I try to undo the valve, water sprays everywhere. Thank you for your help!!
Love your videos, very helpful! Would love to see a video explaining more of what happens inside the tanks, including the salt tank (where the dry salt pellets are). The salt tank has a hose, is it a bidirectional flow sending fresh water in and then pulling salt water out (to the tanks or drain?)? What is the little container inside the salt tank, what happens with that in the process, does water stay in the small container or in the main salt tank, etc.? I would love a video with details about these things. Thank you!
Anyone have experience with their control disc not moving? I can move it manually, but it does not seem to move through the cycles... I have had a slower, constant draining for days... can't seem to find anything! Thanks!
I have a Kinetico K60 twin tank. The metering disk turns like it’s suppose to and when it regenerates it goes through the brine, rinse and backwash just fine. However, why would it take two hours to regenerate?
Thanks for the Video. My Kinetico doesn't always shut down completely, water seems to keep running continuously but it's just a trickle. To correct this, I turn the screw to start a new cycle.
Thank you for the video- it's the most helpful info I've come across thus far. Did you happen to make a video in the scenario where the vacuum sprays water during regeneration? Also, once I completed all of the steps- my brine tank filled about halfway with water. I am running a full regeneration cycle now to try and correct the issue. A little back info-- I moved into my house in April of this year. The unit functioned flawlessly until one day it stopped. Called Kinetico and they wanted $250 for the service fee before any repairs and $6K for a new unit. After finding out it was a 20 year old unit, I didn't want to invest much into it. I have been researching other brands for a few months, but I really love the dechlorination aspect of my unit that is hard to find in other brands. My gut has been telling me all along that this is just a simple fix and a new unit isn't necessary. I'd be happy to pay for a facetime consult if you feel this is something that could be helped over the phone. Thanks! **edit to add: it uses the salt but does not produce soft water (since August). Water leaked during the regeneration when I unscrewed the bolt- once the water stopped the suction was weak. Now the brine tank is full of water and the salt is no longer in rock formation
Thanks for making the video. My unit gets stuck in the drain mode abd just runs up a massive water bill. Any suggestions, ant get an engineer fir love nor money. Any suggestions?
Thank you for the video very helpful! I knew that I had a problem with the system when I received my water bill. The system was running or flashing non stop until I put it on the yellow bypass....my question is when I re-set the regenration does it have to be on the green on position?
Your first step is to verify the head is properly metering. What if it isn’t? I ran water for several minutes and couldn’t see the disc turning. But I can force it to a regeneration cycle and it will step through the stages on its own. Can you do a video on what to do in this situation?
Can you answer the questions about the regeneration tube drain continuing to drip after cycling? Is it a seal or broken valve? Any trouble shooting around this problem would be valuable.
They aren't supposed to drip after cycling if its a basic softening unit. Most likely a bad o-ring or piston ring inside the head. call kinetico and have a tech come out.
Great videos! Do you have one to show how your system is all connected? I just purchased the same unit with the k5 for my folks and I am looking for a video on how everything connects. Any help would be appreciated! Kinetico doesn’t want to help. Thank you!
The "Mach bypass valve" that is seen in the video can be plumbed in with either port as the inlet. You will just have to adjust the bypass by removing the handle and covering the other in service position. The K5 is pretty simple, Blue is inlet (must be plumbed in after the softener for longevity purposes), Red is the drain, yellow and green connect to the WOW tank yellow and green ports, and white is the output water going to the faucet and or fridge. Is the unit used?
@ thank you for the info. Yes, the unit is used and looks exactly like your setup only it’s missing the water supply port for the k5 on the side of the softener outlet like yours has. I’d like to do that to mine for ease of installation. Also can the k5 be connected to the fridge and to the stand alone faucet at the sink?
@@relsoc The inlet of the softener unit is opposite of the in-service positon on the bypass. So if you are looking at the unit and the green sticker is on the left plumb the untreated water into the right port on the top of the unit and vice versa if the green sticker is on your right. You will probably struggle to find the ported elbow to feed the k5 unless you go through your local kinetico dealer. And as for the fridge yes you can hook both the fridge and faucet up at the same time just need a 3/8s tee and a way to adapter to the fridge water feed. Typically they are are 1/4.
Hi. Nice clear explanation of how the system works. I have a question for you concerning the brine hose. My system has the vacuum during the brine/rinse portion. The rest of the time there is pressure in the brine hose. This includes when the system has completed the regeneration. Should there still be pressure in the brine hose when the system is done? Finally, are all of the systems the same as far as replacement part such as pistons, seals, cones, etc.? I have an older system. I bought it around 1995 and it has never been worked on. Thank you sir!
Great videos Kasey. I have a model 60 that is about 23 years old. I am only sucking brine on one of the regeneration cycles. I have pulled head and cleaned and checked everything per your videos and still same. Any ideas ?
I would like to know about the metering disk and how to change the disk if we believe we need more frequent regeneration. Thanks for you willingness to pass on knowledge.
We have a Kinetico unit two tank that as of two days ago, was stuck on high flow two from the drain to the sink. If you could give me a hint on what to look for or or what to check or what article to clean out that would be wonderful. Thank you.
My unit keep pushing water out the drain. I am talking about gallons of water. Our local water softener technician says nothing is wrong with the unit. Please help.
Thank you Kasey. Great info. If the water tastes salty, what should we check for? My system has two lg 2060s tanks; sediment tank, and ≈40 gal brine storage tank. Also a water Osmo filter at kitchen sink
Hello Kasey , i have a problem with my system it appears to be stuck on drain , and the water just pours out of the drain tube , should i do the trouble shooting? thanks
Mine is also using way to much salt. I add 3 bags of salt in a weekend. By the following weekend it is completely empty of salt and only has water in the salt tank. Did you figure out what is wrong with yours?
Hello Kasey, Thanks for taking the time to show us home owners how to work on our Kinetico System. I have a system that is now over 10 years old and I have both a water softener and an Iron Filter. My system right now is not working correctly as it is no longer using any salt. While I was at work last week my system put a tremendous amount of water into my pond which is where I have all the brine drain into. So it seems that it was stuck in that position on the water softener. I have watched a couple of your videos today and found it very helpful as to what I should do next. I am hoping that I have a clog in my water softener head somewhere. If not, what would be my next step? Can I actually change the media as I am thinking that my media is saturated with Iron and Manganese. Any suggestions you may have would be very helpful. If I can change the media, where can I source it at? Thanks, Gary
Hi Kasey, Thank you for your video. It has been helpful. My problem is I am cycling too often. Two times within a 12 hour period we don’t use that much water so I’m just wondering what’s going on. Thank you.
Great videos, but still have not been able to find one with my problem. My unit works great on one tank, paw on right tank, but not the other, when it switches to regeneration, with paw on left tank it does everything except filling brine tank and shutting off. I have gone through the levels, except top, checking them according to your video with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kasey, thanks so much for your instructive videos. Could you help me with an issue that doesn't seem to have a video? My water softener is cycling way too much and consuming a lot of water and salt. I was slow to realize this, but our last quarter's water bill was way up, and I can now see that it's been eating salt at too high of a rate (ran through three 50 lb bags in a few days). I followed your trouble shooting video precisely and can confirm that the control dial is rotating (seeing the little pawl click), that both sides of the cycle draw the vacuum on the brine tank at the right time, and have the same audibles and drain-line flows that you show in the video. I have a model 2030s. Any advice on what to try next?
Sounds like the level 1 is bad, Put the unit very close to a regeneration and just wait without using any water in the home. If it cycles through to the next regeneration unfortunately the whole level 1 is bad and needs replaced.
Once you go through all the checks and everything seems fine. Where do you set the top thing to? One of the spaces between the backwash and brine rinse?
You can also watch the black dot move away from the manual rotation tab as a good indicator to it metering. My k60 is just constantly draining to waste - service can't get out for almost half a month, so I'm going to go see your other videos if you have something on that.
Sounds like one of the pawls in the cap area is broken or out of place. I might be able to make a video on the cap area soon if there’s enough demand for it
Very informative! Thank you for taking the time to make these helpful videos! Mine is Mach 2060s model and seems to randomly get stuck in endless dripping, and the only way to stop it is forcing a manual wash cycle, until it does it again! My other problem is that actuator on top is made out of plastic and mine is damaged, so it’s really challenging to rotate it now since it sorta stripped out, not sure what it takes to replace it, any thoughts?
My system wont stop running... the kinetico guys came and told me it was because I had high pressure. ended up paying $850 for a plumber to come install a pressure valve and still have the same problem. the thing wont stop making noise. any idea on what this might be?
Awesome video! Do you know why I would be getting short burst (10-20 seconds) of salt water throughout the house? When brushing my teeth or taking a shower I will sometimes taste these burst of salt and then it goes away.
My unit flows discharge water from the drain line continuously. Thereby depleting the brine tank quickly. My unit has been in service for about 30 years, and I've successfully "rebuilt" the head with after market parts from a guy in England, about 6 or 7 years ago. I've also replaced the media material about the same time. Please let me know if you've posted a video about this issue. I'm running straight well water into my house now, bypassing the softner entirely. Thank you for any response!
What if during one of the backwash cycles, half way through I loose water pressure and the meter disc slows down until it cycles through. I also loose house pressure until the cycle completes. Everything else is working properly
Hello there My friend who lives in Las Vegas has a Kinetico water softener system. It does not appear to have that pre filter attached. She has told me that the salt portion is not working. I have watched your other videos. My question is does one ever have to change the resin beads in the system and if so is that difficult to do.. I saw a episode of This Old House where they emptied the resin tank and changed the the resin beans along with some other parts like a plastic strainer/Filter on the bottom of the pipe in the resin tank. I am going to visit her next week and she has asked me to help her diagnose her problems. I found your other 2 videos very helpful Please advise me if possible. Mark
@kaseysirak very helpful video! Question for you. We are moving and I want to take my Kinetco with me. Do I backwash it? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Do you know.. when doing a manual re-gen turning the gear to the Brine-rinse position, after the re-gen the catch tab is the idle window between backwash and brine rinse. As water passes thru the system should catch tab be moving thru the idle window or does it just stay at the beginning until the next re-gen cycle starts? thanks!
my kinetico is not metering I did everything else in your video and it seems to be fine I get suction on the hose . the meter drive paul moves but the no back paul wont jump a notch I believe Im calling the levers correct
After regeneration and it goes to in service water keeps running out drain tube does not shut off, had service technicians out three time and repair last only 3 or 4 months?
I have a problem with my unit, it's constantly running, with a low flow of water I can manually run it thru as you show in your video put it in the service position but when it starts the regen it continues to have a low flow all day. I can't figure it out any suggestions would be helpful . Thank you for your videos the ones I have seen has helped but I haven't seen anything with the same symptoms I have.
Hi 👋 I have completely bypass my unit. I am wondering if you have seen an issue where there is hardly any water pressure in the entire home. There is a pencil thin stream of water when the softener is on.
Thanks for your videos. Very helpful in understanding how to check these units. My unit seems to get stuck during regeneration (not always) and runs for hours until I force it into backwash. I’m not sure what to look for that might be causing this. Unit is two years old .. 2040S OD model. Any ideas about this?
Thank you for these Kinetico exploration videos! If my salt tank is completely empty & keeps filling to about halfway mark with water where the salt should be, what should I do? I keep emptying the water & refilling with water softener pallets but it quickly goes through the pallets & fills again with the water. The bottom of the tank has a lot of salt settiment & what looks like almost rust. Not sure what to do, my landlord is refusing to come look at it or even help me with what to do. I appreciate the help & your videos!
Hi again. My friend in Las Vegas actually has a Kinetico 4040s OD system. I messaged you earlier today. Hoping you can give me advice and or directions on fixing her system that is not working or using the salt brine Thank you in advance
hi Kasey.. great video.. I'm stuck at step 1 though.. what do i do if i dont see the meter paw engage? i get vacuum but it doesn't appear to be metering. Also whats the difference between the 2 in service locations? 1 is crossed the other shows the pipes going straight.
Great video. I have a model 1060 dechlorinator and model 2040S softeners (2 small tanks). 1) Groundwater is tubed into the out-arrowed flange of the DCL and the DCL output is tubed to the inlet-arrowed flange. Does this matter? 2) Also my filter is tubed to the DCL outlet which is between the DCL and the softener. Does this make sense? Thought the filter should be before the DCL inlet to keep residue out of the DCL.
Hey Ken, The arrows on the head of the units don't necessarily have to line up with the pipework assuming you have a Mach bypass valve they can correct the inlet and outlet with it. And as for the filter being attached to the 1060 that is okay, It really depends from dealer to dealer on where the prefilter goes. I have mine before the softener just in case any fine particles of carbon get kicked up from my dechlorinator.
Where do you find parts to rebuild the units. I have a model 60. I came home one day to find the water running in the drain and it didnt stop until I manually turned the dial to stop it.
QUESTION: First off, thank you for the video! Our softener is the same product line. However, ours recently started buzzing and won’t stop. We also noticed, salty foamy water at random times during the week. What are your thoughts?
Hey, thanks for the video series, and congrats on the fish! I did everything in the videos, no blockages, but still no vacuum. It’s an older and smaller unit. Could there be issues with the media in the tanks that would cause the issue? It may have been “mistreated” at some point, lack of salt & general maintenance neglect. Older owner in a basement downstairs.
Thanks for the video. While flushing the toilet or someone taking a shower, the kinetico system is giving me a loud noise and vibration. Any ideas what could cause that? Not the normal operating sounds, which causing a vibration that I can feel upstairs.
Thank you for the video. I have the problem of brine suction not working properly. It starts regenerating, but brine is not getting out of the tank. I hear that noise, but when I disconnect the brine tube the water gets out from the brine elbow, is not sucking air as it suppose to do. This is a 2040S-OD twin tanks, on main tank never works, on the remote tank it works once in 5 times. When it works, is happening as you show in the video with sucking the brine. I opened the Kinetico unit, added some lubricant (Dow Corning 111) on all the valves (maybe to much?), still the same. it just fixed the dripping on the drain tube, no more dripping. There are 3 valves (2xdrain and 1xcontrol) with a conic blue seal. They are not cones anymore they look strangulated. I can't find these anywhere. I'm not a specialist, I just watched whatever I found on youtube, but I can't fix it. I just want to give it a try as is in my house. Thank you.
Typically speaking the most common issues that cause no suction during the brine rinse stage of the back wash are a plugged Venturi or the check stems are not able to move freely. The Venturi is located in the level 3 it is a small plastic piece that is a friction fit with an o-ring. You can find it pretty easily by tearing the unit apart and just looking right where the brine elbow leads. Grab some pliers and gently pull it out and clean as needed a needle or a back of an earring should work just fine for getting any debris out. I also typically blow through the port too. As for the check stems they are located in the base of the unit. So if you take all of the levels off you should see two yellow stems sticking up. They should move freely up and down with little restriction also make sure the holes they check off into are debris free. Finally one other less common issue that can cause this is low water pressure during regeneration. Most commonly this is caused be a plugged prefilter so it wouldn’t hurt to check that out too.
I think these videos are brilliant.......but there is not one to help me find out why my 2020c tank does not refill. Brine is drawn up but tank not refilled. Can you help me please? Thanks, John
My 2nd tank. Not the one with that control device you operated. The attached 2nd one is leaking out of the top of it... Can I take that apart and maybe apply teflon tape to the threads. How do you take the head off that tank? Or do I need a new tank?
Hi there I have a kentico 2020c and have noticed that only one tank out of the 2 is giving soft water and not the other, have tested both regen cycles and both are drawing brian any idea on what it could be? All lever 4 washers have been replaced and also the resin, first in of of the cycles drain was constantly running but managed to sort it out by changing the washers on the drain valve
Hi Kasey, I found 2 small white plastic pieces stuck in the head unit. They couldn't come from the city pipe as I have a filter. As the unit doesn't work anyway (almost no water pressure, no regeneration) I opened the tanks and the resin burst out. The distributor tubes are snap fit and supposedly not removable but they came out easily. I found that both tanks have the distributor tubes snap-in section broken in pieces and that explain the parts found in the head unit. It's impossible to find these tubes to purchase. The snap -in section of the tube is a white plastic (PVC maybe) and the bottom of the tank is black (polypropylene or other hard plastic). Do you think is it worth to try to glue them back to the tank bottom and add new resin? I intend to use loctite plastic bonding glue which supposedly is the best on all kind of plastics. Is there any other solution to fix these tubes? Thank you!
Not a good idea to try and repair these units yourself. call kinetico and swallow the $100 service charge or you'll be spending thousands to replace it.
I did clean the salt tank and poured some water back and added salt one bag. In three days the whole salt one bag is gone. Is it regenerating multiple times? What may be the issue. Please help
I have an unexplainable problem with my system. I get soft water from the cold side, but not the hot. I have verified there is only one source of water coming into the home. I shut off the ball valve at the softener and the hot loses pressure. My water heater is less than two years old and has ben precautionary purge twice in the last week. I have a mister system cooling my air conditioning condenser. I noticed there is a white film where the spray hits the grill. This can't be normal. Does anyone have an answer?
Some sacrificial anode rods in water heaters can leach some hardness back into the water. Usually this is only a few grains of hardness and not nearly as hard as the raw water quality.
My water softener has a hose that is connected to a pvc drain and it has been leaking today, I did all the steps you instructed in the video but it still keeps leaking. Is there anything else I should try?
In your video, you said that you will make a next video about the reasons why salt water is not sucked, or why the salt tube has no suction. I can't find it. Can you answer it? I'm from China and almost no one here knows how to repair.

This is extremely helpful. I was going to get an engineer in to service the head but I have suction so the problem is the float valve beingʻ blocked

I changed my filter bout a month ago, and when I went to put more salt in the brine tank had no water?
Hello Kasey , i have a problem with my system it appears to be stuck on drain , and the water just pours out of the drain tube , should i do the trouble shooting? thanks
I have the same problem. Did you fix it.
My Kinectico is going through a bag of salt a day, could you please advise?
Hi Kasey,
Thank you for your video. It has been helpful. My problem is I am cycling too often. Two times within a 12 hour period we don’t use that much water so I’m just wondering what’s going on. Thank you.
Our system is regenerating but not shutting off automatically. Any suggestions?
how much water should be in the brine tank, and what to do if there is too much? Thanks for the videos.
What happens if I have continued water coming out
Great videos, but still have not been able to find one with my problem. My unit works great on one tank, paw on right tank, but not the other, when it switches to regeneration, with paw on left tank it does everything except filling brine tank and shutting off. I have gone through the levels, except top, checking them according to your video with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for a great video!! Solved my problem with salt sucking 🤘
No water pressure and can't get the filter off. Any help would be appreciated.
I learned something new so, thank you!
Do you have video to fix salty water issue from similar Kinetico water softener?
What if it doesn't click when you turn the screw?
Sounds like one of the pawls in the cap area is broken or out of place. I might be able to make a video on the cap area soon if there’s enough demand for it
Thanks Kasey
Very informative! Thank you for taking the time to make these helpful videos! Mine is Mach 2060s model and seems to randomly get stuck in endless dripping, and the only way to stop it is forcing a manual wash cycle, until it does it again! My other problem is that actuator on top is made out of plastic and mine is damaged, so it’s really challenging to rotate it now since it sorta stripped out, not sure what it takes to replace it, any thoughts?
Its very easy to replace if you can get the part
Thanks man, do you happen what causes the dripping outside of the rinse and wash cycle?
My system wont stop running... the kinetico guys came and told me it was because I had high pressure. ended up paying $850 for a plumber to come install a pressure valve and still have the same problem. the thing wont stop making noise. any idea on what this might be?
What kind of filter do you use with Kinecto
Hello there
My friend who lives in Las Vegas has a Kinetico water softener system.
I found your other 2 videos very helpful
Please advise me if possible.
Mark
@kaseysirak very helpful video! Question for you. We are moving and I want to take my Kinetco with me. Do I backwash it? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
My kinetico 2060s water softener is not regenerating automatically what can I do
Do you know.. when doing a manual re-gen turning the gear to the Brine-rinse position, after the re-gen the catch tab is the idle window between backwash and brine rinse.
I don’t get vacuum, how can I fix this problem.
Could be the pre-filter needs changed or the resin bed if fouled. Id check your prefilter first if it hasn't been changed in a while.
Hoping you can give me advice and or directions on fixing her system that is not working or using the salt brine
Thank you in advance
hi Kasey.. great video..
Hey Ken,
The arrows on the head of the units don't necessarily have to line up with the pipework assuming you have a Mach bypass valve they can correct the inlet and outlet with it. And as for the filter being attached to the 1060 that is okay, It really depends from dealer to dealer on where the prefilter goes. I have mine before the softener just in case any fine particles of carbon get kicked up from my dechlorinator.
@@kaseysirak Thanks for getting back to me so fast Kasey!
Hi, good video, the brine tank is over filling, this is a small unit that is all in one, what would be the cause?
Can I disassemble the backwash/ brine assembly? Unable to see settings. Has dirty water inside. Thanks!
I will try to make a video on how to disassemble the cap area in the near future.
On my metering disk it only has a vacuum on one of the 2 Brine cycles
Great job
Hey Kasey, I have a Kinetico system with a chlorinator tank attached. The chlorinator isn't currently working. Any suggestions?
Anyone know how to remove the cpvc pipes from the top? Redoing my plumbing and can’t find any info on it
It’s just like a shark bite fitting, push in on the pipe then push in on the inner collar and pull the pipe out of the fitting.
Getting hard water out of unit what do I do to correct this
My kinetico uses almost 60l of water for one regeneration, it hapens ones in 24H, I find it that it is too much water and salt. Can you advice me?
My knetico water softener keeps making a clicking sound? Or a chirp sound?
This is likely the control valve
Perfect!!!!! Thank you
Do you know where I can get a rebuild kit for my K120?
Mine is stuck in low flow. My pump kicks on every 25 minutes and unit makes a hissing sound.
My 2nd tank. Not the one with that control device you operated. The attached 2nd one is leaking out of the top of it... Can I take that apart and maybe apply teflon tape to the threads. How do you take the head off that tank? Or do I need a new tank?
It is sealed via an O-ring at the base of the threads. Typically if the tank goes bad it is more of a pinhole leak
Having an issue with mine its constantly draining
I am getting a charcoal looking color in my salt reservoir where I add the salt. What do I need to do to fix this?
No salt useage. Have had the head apart 3 times per your instruntions. Still cant get suction.Gaskets look good.
Please help
What if my kinetico system vibrates?
Had a service guy replace the level 0 of head, now unit doesn't seem to regenerate. What could the issue be?
