- This is a new any% TAS of Super Metroid, primarily devised by sniq and total who found out the method for getting OoB as well as for finding a way to reach a block that would allow arbitrary code execution. I provided the input for the beginning of the run and helped optimize the final parts but all credit undeniably goes to those two for finding all of this.
Tool Assisted - these games are played using a emulator at super slow speeds and save states. The goal is to provide entertainment by showing off game glitches and beating the game as fast as possible.

My guess is they are probably required for whatever data fuckery goes on which triggers the ending.
My guess is, that you have to save the game at this exact savepoint. Since in order to reach it you need to get Morph, and in order to get back up you need the missles, you grab those two items
Both other replies are wrong. This just happens to be the closest save point and it takes the morph ball to get into. No save point can be reached sans morph ball. Missiles aren't required, they just make the process much faster (see 7:13, he fires a missile... for some reason). That means that yes, you can beat the game with NOTHING but morph ball.
Without collecting the missiles, the "Pit Room" (Mother Brain's old room) won't contain any pirates, so you you can't unlock the grey door.

Let us examine the metroid here. If you take a close look at the exterior membrane, it appears to be quite soft and gelatinous. The metroid creatures also seem to take up approximately the same amount of space as samus's morph ball. That being said, a metroid should be able to squeeze through any holes the morph ball can, or possibly smaller ones due to the properties of a metroid's membrane. The conclusion is, a metroid may not have the ability to crawl and most likely does not need it in the first place, however this lack of crawling ability will not stop a metroid from fitting into small crawl spaces and holes.

If you mean Samus then its because the power armor is too big but if you mean the jelly life suckers than its probably because theyre more designed for hovering/flying

The intro, transition from Ceres to Zebes, save/reset/restart, and the outro take more than 4 minutes together... they take up more time than the actual gameplay!

I just wanted to add one little thing about the creation of this TAS. It is not anything special and much less important than the work of this TAS´s authors, but actually, I researched the old pages of the Super Metroid forum within TASVideos and found your old post someday, and later I told sniqwc3 about it when he was streaming on twitch and I guess that this kind of initialized sniq´s successful pause abuse research for skipping transitions. But then again, it is only a nitpick.
So anyways, I am glad that all the research lead to such a great/short TAS!

I think you can't escape brinstar without them.
Yeah, the door in the old mother brain room will be gray. It might be possible to glitch past it but it would be slower than actually collecting the missiles.

If you did find a way to glitch past the door without Morph Ball or Missiles, you could beat the game with 0% completion?
Theoretically yes. The problem is that while it's possible to enter the save room without morphball it's not possible to get out again as there's no way to get OoB after you get back out to the crateria main shaft. And the save station is necessary because a reset has to be performed in order to get back to the intro screen which till create some necessary junk in the games memory.

Any% is doing the game as fast as possible, skipping everything thats unnecessary, he/she skipped the entire game cause there was a glitch that made it unnecessary, so its still considered an Any%

I guess there could be glitchless any%. But that just makes the entire thing about what is or isn't a glitch.
This video is entertaining, but Nikplayer has a point. Total Control can be fun to watch, but having a category for TC Any% seems like something that needs to exist, mainly because these glitches almost never cross over to the "normal" speedrunning scene. Especially in a game like Super Metroid.

So can someone explain what happens in this TAS? Did they write some code or something that triggered the credits? Samus barely even moved around when the glitching occurred. There must have been some other stuff going on that I didn’t see.

I want to try this as I have been mucking around with xray for years but this is so much cleaner and simpler. Awesome stuff. I want to be able to do that live. ^-^
