Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. A year ago, we were still covering the start of the Japanese advanced across the Pacific, Today, the picture is much more different, however, due to the fact that the Japanese have been thrown into the defensive both in the Solomons and in New Guinea. With plans already underway to evacuate Guadalcanal, and with the recent fall of Buna as we saw last week, the horizon looks grim for the Empire of Japan. In this episode, we’ll continue with our coverage of the Battle of Buna-Gona as it enters its last phase: the Sanananda Campaign; and we’ll also head to the CBI theater to see some new developments in the Yunnan border.

I don't think I know any other Pacific War documentation available and accessible to the general public that goes into such detail on military operations while also keeping an eye on the big picture. This series really fills a gap and answers a lot of questions I've had for years. There are big picture documentations that cover the war in a couple of hours, where I'd always ask "Yeah, but how did that outcome actually come to pass?", or stories about individual soldiers or suchlike where I'd ask "Yeah, but what did that mean for the war?" This series finally provides some answers. If you actually manage to cover the whole war this way, I'll be watching for the next 2.5 years.

Great video as always. As Thai, I never ever known that we do initiate attack against Chinese army positions during WW2 (and also British positions in Malaysia as well like you show me in some of you previous videos). All we were taught in history class are something like PM Plaek is kinda bad person for allow Japanese to use our country as base, some territorial defense unit in the South did an awesome job at holding Japanese marine advance after their amphibious assault and free Thai group is like a hero that save our country by creating resistance group and saying to Allies that we are on your side only PM Plaek (and some people) support Japanese. Thank you for this awesome series!

I was ignorant of Thai involvement in the Pacific War as well. Most history in US primary and secondary schools focus on the American contribution and speak only a little about the British, Australian and Chinese part in the struggle. Other countries (like Thailand) are not mentioned at all. Is PM/Marshal Plaek the same one who mandated western dress codes in Thailand during his regime?

Thai's history book always skip the part that we were the Axis and take an offensive against the Allied both to the north and the south. They told only the story how we did not become a WW2 loser side. This video elaborates every detail which include my country on every aspect. Thank you K&G!

From the middle of 1942 until new years eve, the Allies and the Japanese had fought each other on more or less equal grounds. But the start of 1943, also marked the start of a periode where the initiative would lay firmly with the Allies.
At Truk, admiral Yamamoto was probably not in a very celeberatory mood. His concerns, and that of many others were expressed by his right hand man, Vice-Admiral Matome Ugaki in his diary:
    "31st December 1942
The year 1942 is going to pass tonight. How brilliant was the first-stage operation up to April! And what miserable setbacks since Midway in June! The invasions of Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, and New Caledonia, the liberation of India and destruction of the British Far Eastern Fleet have all scattered like dreams. Meanswhile, not to speak of capturing Port Moresby, but the recovery of Guadalcanal..... turned out to be impossible"
Within a few days after this note, admiral Yamamoto ordered the initiation of Operation KE, the evacuation of the troops on Guadalcanal.
If Yamamoto and his closest subordinates had been able to compare the home front reports from Japan, Nazi Germany and the United States, they would have seen that the war is already lost by this point, and that any further fighting would bring nothing but unnecessary deaths.
One example is the amount of shipping produced in the year of 1942.
    ships
    Nazi-Germany 244
    Empire of Japan 68
    United States 1854
Furthermore, it's about this time that the a new fighter, the F4U Corsair, was declared "ready for combat". Its first deployment: Henderson Field.

Good point. I think now we are in the middle of the second phase of the war, in which after a brilliant start, Japan AND the Us are fighting on Equal terms (albeit with Japan losing ground). I think this phase extends to November 1943. After that, América Will wreak havoc with the Japanese forces.

Those 1850 ships are just nutting out the production lines. American production starts to hit its stride in 43 and even by 45 was nowhere near its potential peak. The US still had two more years of exponential growth forecast for 1946 and 1947.

You get the Thai name wrong a bit with Thai prime minister and commander. Phibun Songkhram is actually a whole last name, so His name should be Plaek Phibunsongkhram (แปลก พิบูลสงคราม) and Luang is actually a noble rank of sort so Luang Haansongkhram real name is Phichai Haansongkhram. Lastly, ‘Phi’ in Thai meant ภิ which actually doesn’t have ‘h’ sound.

Around 3 months after the fall of Buna, a junior Australian officer who fought at Buna was in Port Moresby at the airforce liaising office. He was waiting his turn when he noticed a whole heap of recon photos on the wall so he had a look at them, he quickly discovered that they of the Buna/Gona area, they clearly showed the Japanese constructing their defences. He asked a admin guy when these where taken, the admin guy said it’s written on the back of the photos. They where taken 2 months before the Australian/USA attack ! To say he as angry was an understatement !

It's striking how small so much of the fighting in the pacific was, with regular battles of a few hundrets or thousands of man. Compared to the front in eastern europe, where battles regulary reached hundrets of thousands of man. Does not detract from the important place these struggles had thought.

The Huggins roadblock was established on 30 November by I Company under Capt. John D. Shirley and the Antitank Company under Capt. Meredith M. Huggins, both elements of the 3d Battalion, 126th Infantry. Operations of the next three weeks on the Sanananda front consisted essentially of the maintenance of this roadblock. Capt. Shirley was killed on 2 December and Capt. Huggins was wounded on the 5th, but their men held on, against incredible odds and with no reinforcement, until 22 December, when they were relieved by the Australians.
The defense of the Higgins roadblock epitomizes the combat experience of the entire 126th Infantry during the Papuan campaign. The 126th was the first U.S. force to be sent to Port Moresby and the hardest-hit of the three regiments of the 32nd Infantry Division. It had 3,791 men when it entered combat against the Japanese in mid-November. At the conclusion of the Battle of Buna-Sanananda, it had suffered a total of 3,406 casualties. When the 126th was returned to American command, Eichelberger received what was left of it with a martial welcome complete with band music. He later wrote: "They were so ragged and so pitiful that when I greeted them my eyes were wet."

(I sure would have difficulties to see that the racists and their victims are from different races)

living in thailand, theres a complete absence of the truth in thai history regarding ww2,along with any other parts f their history which portray a negative light,as a thai writer says they whitewash the whole thing, ditto the american war in indo china and the actions within the thai border too.the korean war too,the thai navys major battleship ran itself aground.a level of incmpetence that was repeated just a few weeks ago when another navy ship sank in the shallow protected gulf of thailand, many thais would welcome a glimpse of the the truth as theyre certainly not going to get it especially with the current bunch in charge.please illuminate us all as u can see many people would love to see more

For the most part, they were taken on as porters by both sides, whether that be through pay in rations or being impressed to work. Typically, they would haul food and ammunition but also carried casualties on litters back to aid stations. For this last part, they are remembered fondly by American and Australian troops as they would handle their charges with gentleness, even over rough terrain or under fire.

Hey Buddy can you start making a series on How Marathas defeated mughals in India. There were many battles which happened and a lot of guerilla tacticts which were used by Marathas to defeat mughals. This IMO is Indian Game of Thrones and would take 1 whole series where you can cover different battles such as Battle of Pratapgard, Battle of Pawankind etc. I think you can attract a lot of Indian Audiences from this. Thanks!

I love this series! May I suggest that you might do well to include some footage to backup your excellent situational maps. It would be a welcome bonus and break up the monotony of maps. However, the degree of research you guys have gone through is indeed highly impressive and you're to be commended for it. The only other thing I would like to see is some sort of scale markers on your maps to help us get a grip on how big an area are we seeing in each map. I know that is the one area I struggle to grasp (is that 100 yards or a 1000 yards?). Thank you and keep up the wonderful work you are doing on this important documentation job filling in the vast blanks left by the history books!

They Claim Taiwan as theirs', which it never was.
      Taiwan is an independent country.

@@yemannwaiphyo8817 The twist you didn’t think of is the China government (KMT) that is fighting in WW2 against Japan/Thailand is also the same one that is part of the government in Taiwan (after losing Civil war in China).

@@yemannwaiphyo8817 TW is never an independent country at least officially. ( as they have to for constitutional reasons)
Same goes to Thailand with their whitewashing of history about this incursions that is utterly removed (to a point that most of us in SEA did not know as well).
Every nation does this for prestige to keep its reputation for many aspects - government legitimacy, political support, pride, foreign investment, population sentiment .. yada yada.
Sometimes its nice to develop good thought process by learning to think starting with "why they would do this" logically instead of poking fun and knowing nothing.
