To be sure, I could not find a photo of the actual US Army Colonel William A. McCulloch who commanded the 27th Regiment during that battle. Otherwise, great content! I learned a lot to include being enlightened on the participation of the 2nd Marine Division during the final phase of the Battle of Guadalcanal.
seriously to me this is as good as any if not better documentary ive ever seen on ww2 the amount of detail is really good there was so many battles and fights i didnt know about and ive been watching documentary's and such for like 15 years i knew there was battles but that was all i knew about some of them particularly about Australia...i really hope after this series he goes into Europe and Africa potentially so much great content to come
I have watched and rewatched so many Kings and Generals videos over the years recounting so many pivotal moments in history, but I have to say, this series is my favorite!! Roman history is by far my personal favorite, and I have watched your video on Idistaviso and the Angrivarian wall more times than I can count, but the Pacific is more personal for me!! My great grandfather on my wife’s side served on the USS Rasher, a Gato class Submarine with an incredible battle history. My great uncle on my mother’s side was also a surgeon on the Yorktown!! I myself served in the Marine Corps, and my fist duty station was Okinawa. I took every opportunity while I was there to visit every museum and tour every cave and battlefield that was accessible. Thank you so very much for giving such incredible in depth coverage of this theatre. I’m positive you’ve already read the primary source I’m about to provide, but just in case you haven’t come across it, I highly recommend “With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa” by Eugene Sledge. Reading the words written by a Marine who was there, and that lived through those things, it was sobering to say the least, especially as Sledge has a way of writing, that in my mind makes me think of him as almost a modern Socrates!! One other source, and this one is less well known, is “Red Scorpion- the War Patrols of the USS Rasher” by Peter Sasgen. The author’s father was on board every patrol and was a plank owner, just like my wife’s great grandfather. Rasher ended up with one of the highest tonnages of enemy shipping sunk by US Submarine during the Second World War!! So much amazing history, and such fantastic perspective to see the Pacific from this macro level on a play b play basis…. I can’t say enough, thank you very much for all that you do, but in particular, from this Jarhead, thank you for this series!! Chesty Puller would be proud!!
Islamic Expansion was so new to me, that series is great! Grateful K&G can expose me to actual world history. I do have to throw in pre-Columbian Civilization as a favorite. Some of those videos from years past really opened my eyes and mind! 👍

James Jones historical fiction book The Thin Red Line recounts his time in the Army fighting on Guadalcanal. He changed the names of these engagements to The Dancing Elephant and The Boiled Shrimp. It's an incredible book 10/10 highly recommend

When Hyakutake planned the Japanese defense against the imminent American attack in early January, he most definitely did not have Operation KE in mind because the 17th Army had not yet been informed of the decision to withdraw. The Yano Battalion, designated as the rear guard for the KE evacuation, was delivered to Guadalcanal by a Tokyo Express mission of nine destroyers on 14 January. Accompanying the battalion was Lieutenant Colonel Kumao Imoto, representing the 8th Area Army, who was to deliver the evacuation order and plan to Hyakutake. Late on 15 January, Imoto reached 17th Army's headquarters at Kokumbona and informed Hyakutake and his staff of the decision to withdraw from the island. At first upon hearing the order, Hyakutake, his chief of staff, Major General Shuichi Miyazaki, and senior staff officer Colonel Norio Konuma contemplated disobeying the order and sacrificing the 17th Army in a final attack on Allied forces. Hyakutake finally accepted the order at noon on 16 January, recognizing the order was formally endorsed by Emperor Hirohito himself and must be carried out at any cost.

15:00 captain Charles Davis' attack was depicted in the Thin Red Line by John Cusack. The result was a Medal of honor for him and the soldiers from the novel didnt like it much, because he promised them to get a bunch of drinks after the victory, but disappeared to celebrate his MOH without getting them beer.
If you haven’t seen it already, you should definitely check out The Thin Red Line (1998 I believe) movie. It’s summarizes the battle of galloping horse very greatly as far as Hollywood movie standards go. Definitely one of my favorites.
Critics can say what they want about the strategic value of Mount Austen, but it can't be denied that Patch's, as well as Collins', ability to plan and coordinate maneuvers through jungle terrain was remarkable for men engaging in their first offensive action. It helped too that the 25th Infantry Division was mobilized and trained in Hawaii, and was prepared for exactly this kind of "lightweight" warfare.
This seems the right episode, the ending of Guadalcanal, to mention that the Allies lost more men at sea then in ground fighting, over the entire campaign. From an old USN guy, this needs to be pointed out.
Depth charges? Against a land target? I'd like to know how they did that. As depth charges don't explode until a certain depth is reached (the fuse is triggered by water pressure nit impact).

Lawton Collins (25th Inf Div) came as a pleasant surprise, as my father befriended him in the 1930s when Collins was a G-2 officer at Fort McKinley, Manila. Btw, this stage of the Guadalcanal Campaign was the basis of James Jones' novel, "The Thin Red Line" and its film adaptations.
This is nitpicking, I know, but "more and more untenable" should be "less and less tenable". Keep up the great work, the past, present and future of K&G is a bright spot in human civilization

I believe a number of 350 or 650 lbs air launched depth bombs/charges were utilized by the USMC aircraft during the campaign for dive bombing attacks. These would've essentially been standard GP bombs built specifically to fit hydrostatic fuzes and travel better in water, but maintained noze impact fuzes for use against surfaced subs, surface vessels, and in rare instances ground forces. I have no idea if this was done purposefully or if it was just a matter of using what was available, documentation is light.
@@Ironarcher13 then these would not be depth charges. Impact fuses would not be fitted to depth charges as as soon as they hitvthexwatervthey would trigger. It might be the same warhead with a different triggering mechanism, but then it cannot be a depth charge but anti-surface vessel bomb.
How aware were the US as to the deterioration of the Japanese forces on Guadalcanal? Did they know that they were basically melting away from lack of supplies?

In the IJA, a Gun ("Army") was equivalent to a corps in other armies. And as part of the basic organizational structure of the IJA, the commanding general of a Gun, like that of a Shidan ("Division"), would always be a Lieutenant-General.

Good video, it's pronounced Kay-pock. We no longer really use it but it was the primary fill for life jackets before plastic based foams.
