If you have ever seen Mike play live he will make you feel like throwing your axe away as soon as you get home. But as long as you wait a few days his playing will inspire you to work harder and learn more. You will always come out a better player in the end. He is a great guy too, very humble.
Mike is definately a master of the craft! As for lose the chorus, that's what gives him his full, individual sound, so his playing is definately recognizable, amongst the rest. A true inspiration to us all!!!
I met him last summer and he is a really down to earth guy. All smiles and really appreciates his fans.I get fustrated sometimes when I play guitar, but persistance and patience works a long way.
I did this interview for the UK Guitarist magazine. Mike is a great player and this was my second interview with him, although the first one was for (I think) The Guitar Magazine. It was a series of what I called "Private Lessons". I'm super pleased that this has got so many views and also that people dig Mike so much. Thank you all. Mo Nazam
Hi - I'm happy that my work is being seen by people. Perhaps you could add a link in the description to my Patreon page when I get it up and running? For now perhaps you could add this link - www.berakaharts.org.uk Cheers.
Saw him last night with Dave Weckl and Chris Minh Dokey.. It was AMAZING, more than amazing actually! Best show I've seen in a long time, maybe ever! Had a little word with him before the show. Such a cool guy!
I just saw him live, shook his hands and got his signature on his latest album in Dubai's Jazz festival 2 days ago amazing character and a true musician.. when he was walking down form the stage the only thing he was saying was "how was the sound? how was the sound?" just amazing!!
@SnippetChaos There was a book of his that had a CD of tracks with and without guitar. It's call "Ultimate Play Along" Warner Bros. publications. Dave Weckl and John Patitucci are the rhythm section, so it's like the most slamming backing tracks you ever heard.
This was really helpful. I get so frustrated and think other guitarist have some special "thing" that I don't have. Jazz still escapes me. But this helps me not sell my stuff on Ebay.
Would anyone happen to know what kinds of patterns/scale formations he's playing between 1:06 and 1:21? My guess at this moment is that he's playing within a Bebop, Melodic Minor or Half/Whole tone scale context.
man, the best thing to do is to transcribe solos and apply the ideas from solos into standards. that way you get some vocabulary going. hope this helps! : )
0:43 "I kind of never left the blues and rock sutff totally just because I'm a jazz guitar player, I wanna incorporate it all 'cause sometimes it's more.. can sound more like a horn player that way so I use some stuff like the... (solo ;) ) 1:29 where you got both you got some blues, a lot of strings bending which I think horn players do, saxophone players have always done that so why not guitar? It's something you cant do on piano, I mean why not take advantage of it?" I hope that's the part
Why should he lose it because Chorus is not in vogue atm? it's his voice and instantly recognizable like Hendrix's fuzzface, Eddie VH phase 90 or Stevie's Tube Screamer remember it's not you playing the chorus it's MIke Stern.. ya dink..

Mike has a very soothing soul and yet a burning musical gift for composition and improvisation.
Humble cat! You just can't help but like him. Upside downside was such an influence for me as a kid. It was the gateway to bebop and post for me.

What a monster player Mike Stern is, and so incredibly humble. Very inspirational.

"we want part 2!"
"we want part 2!"
"we want part 2!"
Mike Stern super guitarist!!!
a step further to that is to analyze the solos you transcribed so you can create/modify to have your own vocabulary (on top of the transcribed ones)!
Great ;-)

It's up.

No, it didn't have any compositions, just backing tracks in different styles. But still interesting and great to practice with.

agreed. Maybe, just maybe... he should experiment more with slight delays to create the "chorus" effect, much the same like Pat Meth.

haha it was cool listening to mike play without the chorus effects
yamaha pacifica?
