    Im on the lookout for tips and mods. I just bought a 1991 FJ1200 today off a retired bike mechanic. Its only got 48000km on it, mint condition well cared for. Its blue/white. Scored it for $3500, which imo is a bargain considering its condition. (Bikes are often expensive here in New Zealand). Initially what blew me away, ok the power, but the smoothness. Effortless motorway cruising. Now i can get out of the city, i didn't before coz my daily was a VL250 intruder 😂.

      Wow seems like you found yourself a keeper there.48 000km.! Barely run in!
      Hopefully you will enjoy the bike just how she is for now . At least there is loads of info out there regarding improvements. Yes the engine is very smooth even if they are over 30 years old . Going from a 250 is certainly a power upgrade. Hope you are lucky with the bike. You certainly have super roads in NZ.!

    Nice looking bike 👍
    I have the 89 3cv model in midnight blue, 89 thousand miles now.
    If you want it to handle even better than it does with the suspension upgrades maybe look into fitting an fzr1000exup rear wheel as it's 17" and allows fitment of a 180 section tyre, with the extra diameter, width and sport or semi sport tyres these handle much better than standard.
    I've also fitted Dyna ignition coils and iridium plugs, when pressing the start button the engine doesn't even make a full revolution before starting, it's crazy, the starter motor makes that hic sound for a split second and the bike fires up instantly, this mode also makes the engine feel much smoother and slightly better mpg.
    I especially like your brake caliper mod, very cool. 👍❤️🇬🇧

    Great looking bike Andrew, I've just bought an '85 fj1100 and was wondering if the rack you've got on the back of yours would fit mine? I don't know if the frame or mounting points were different between the models or changed over the years

    • @andrewonmyway8184
      @andrewonmyway8184  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! The rear mounting frame is a seperate unit which bolts on. The whole frame is all bolted together. The part numbers for the rear frame seem to be the same for FJ100+ FJ1200 up to 1990 ish. Then the later FJ1200 bikes like mine have a new part number but look very similar in the drawings. I don't think you will have any problem finding a rack to fit yours. Thanks for checking out my channel and good luck!

    Hi what tyres would you say are best . I live in Ireland and need the tyres to cope with our very poor roads. I do ride two up so again i need the rubber to cope with that. Thanks. The other question that i have is there any MOD for the center stand . Its nearly imposible to get it on the main stand.

    • @andrewonmyway8184
      @andrewonmyway8184  4 місяці тому

      The FJ weighs a lot. About 260kg with fluids. So it’s going to be a struggle with the centre stand. All I can say is there is a knack to it. Having correct pressure in the tyres helps. Otherwise to bit of weight training and you will have it over your head. The tyres are always a personal thing. I’ve always liked Avons . They wear well. No I have fitted radial tyres to my bike. Avon Storm 3d AV 66 R16 back AV 65 front. Bit limited with 16 inch rear. Had Bridge battle BT46 not radial and they were great but wore quickly. I like the Avons they seem to be wearing well. Good luck with your bike!

    @davidroche7685 Рік тому +1

    I believe the engine on any big bike of 600cc or over can easily go well beyond 100 thousand miles or go around the clock twice with looking after the engine, oil changes, servicing and treating it with respect. Big bike engines are only ticking over doing the speed limits on roads and in the real world those engines can't be pushed to their limits for long periods of time in real world road situations or you be dead. I clocked up 60 thousand miles on a little 125 and it still runs great and still does its top speed of 65 mph. What fucks most engines is neglicting the oil and maintenance, trashing it hard constantly, burnouts and excesive wheelys. This is what shortens the lifespan of engines.

    • @andrewonmyway8184
      @andrewonmyway8184  Рік тому +1

      Completely agree with you David. Constant short journeys are another factor engines hate. It would be fun to have the time to see what sort of max mileage we could get out of our bikes if we had the time to do so. But people generally change and update their rides after a couple of years. I’ve heard of R1s going over 200k without problems. That Dutch Sjaak and Nick Sanders have proven that already. I look ford to my 200k mark on my FJ.
      Thanks for your comment and watching . Ride safe!

    Got a 1993 FJ1200. Any advice on setting up the mono-shock would be welcome. It is a Hagon, red spring with the number 070 on it. I've only had the bike a month or so, still getting used to it. Like yours, it has been upgraded to blue spot brakes. It also has a Scottoiler, engine bars, heated grips and came complete with a luggage rack because the fellow who sold it didn't have the old indicators. All I've had to do to it so far was put some fuel in it and replace the battery, it's been laid up for a year or more, but does not seem to have suffered any ill effects otherwise.

    • @andrewonmyway8184
      @andrewonmyway8184  2 роки тому

      Great to hear you have got yourself an FJ1200 David. Sounds like its very well equipped. Setting up your Hagon rear shock must must be similar to my rear YSS MZ456. You first has to get your sag correctly adjusted. This is basically how much your bike sinks when you are seated when fully kitted out. You must have a spring tool to turn the collar so the preload is correct. Then you must set your rebound adjustment which is how fast that shock gets back to its full travel. I had to play around a little when I first installed my rear and haven’t touched it since. There are loads of vids out there regarding suspension setup. Good luck with your bike.

    • @davidbrinnen
      @davidbrinnen 2 роки тому +1

      @@andrewonmyway8184 Thank you. Yes, I got a tool. I took a couple of turns off the preload, and it is surprising how much difference it has made. It was set up before for two-up and fully loaded I reckon, as it had no give in it for me one up, not even slightly! I'll give it a test with me and a bit of loading and see how it goes. The front is a bit soft, but I am hoping now that things are a bit more balanced it won't seem quite so "skittish" on our rutted Lincolnshire roads. The rear damping seems to pretty much spot on. My previous bikes were mostly mid sized, 500 single cafe racers, a GS 550 and a XJ600 which I found the most comfortable overall. By comparison, the FJ seems very amenable, progressive power delivery irrespective of the gear it is in and once it is moving it feels surprisingly supple in spite of it being somewhat heavier than either the GS and the XJ, neither of which were particularly light. Now I just need to convince myself it is going to be reliable before taking on a 300-mile jaunt. As you might gather from my selections, all of which I had for many years (except for one of the 500's that was written off due to someone pulling out in front of me at a cross road) and getting somewhat long in the tooth, I am very much a fan of 80's Japanize bikes.

    • @andrewonmyway8184
      @andrewonmyway8184  2 роки тому

      @@davidbrinnen Thanks for your reply David. I too found the front too soft so I put in some progressive springs as I've mentioned in my vid. I also put thicker 10w fork oil in which transformed the front end. Could be wise to replace your fork oil. A bit fiddly but doable. Getting the correct oil level measurements from the top of the fork tube was really important I found. Ride safe!

      No. I did not feel the need to do these. The original airbox is still in place and makes a washable airfilter worthwhile. I can certainly recommend K&N.

    • @countryjoe3551

      The most that you might have to do compensate for a K%N filter is to shim up the main jet needles slightly with a 2.5 mm ID flat washer under the main jet needle clips, assuming that your carburetors do not already have adjustable needles.
