Andrew On my way
Приєднався 14 тра 2020
Have a few older motorcycles I like to tinker with. Have been working with my bikes for years. Have built up a fair bit of knowledge which I want to share with you. I want to share tips and hopefully help others. I want to start with my 39 year old Kawasaki GT 550 G1 which has been stripped and fully rebuilt. Hopefully you will help me grow my channel and I will become rich!. Only kidding. This You tube lark is a new territory for me and I need your patience.
I have loads of other interests too so I may pop in the unexpected video now and again.

What a build up to starting a bike😅
You bet!
Just like my old bike. G1 with candy wine red paintwork and black gloss engine with gold wheels. Lovely.
Great ! Got new vid coming !
Well looked after mate, thanks for the tips got same duco ABS model low km unloved as it was stored away 20 years after a fall, needs much love but hopefully one day!
Thanks for watching and your comments. Lucky if you have found a nice workable example and will clean up well after a lot of perseverance! Good luck!
that bike is beatiful but is burning some oil
I have to add a little now and again. Thanks for watching!
Mono sound ;)
Sorry about that!
Improve low running? I never run below 4'000. Out on highway cruising over 5'000 sometimes 6. These motors are made to run high .
True! But what I suggest help my bike low down big time! Thanks for your support !
Add 520 conversion chain. 2 up rear sprocket more torque . ABM straight bar.
Thanks for the tip!
I have had 3 VF hondas, the VF1000F, had several faults but was never beaten on the road, first monoshock VFR750 the most beutiful. No other bike in the world I have ever seen had a special fairing for the sidestand. It had only two faults, both solved in the VFR 800. It is in my garage now
That’s a wise choice my friend! Look after that VFR 800 of yours and thanking you kindly for stopping by!
I rode an 86 red and white demo in Melbourne Australia and was extremely impressed with the power and smoothness of the FJ 1200 i ended up buying a new 88 model and put heaps of KMs on her before trading up for another Yamaha FJR 1300 06 model which I still own and ride nearly every day here in Australia she's just done around 167000 KMs without any major issues im 65 now and apart from the weight of her i really want to put as many KMs as possible on her i think it's so reliable it's possible she could outlive me we all know that with motorcycle's anything could go wrong electrical issues cam chains the list never ends but so far so good and honestly you can't buy a much better sports tourer that will do practically everything for your money the Gen 1 came out in 01 and has been around since 2023 or 24 i think pretty good engine to last the test of time
Great write up! Never ridden and FJR but I can imagine they are grand motorcycles! As you mentioned these Yamaha engines are pretty much indestructible and one is able to look after them and service yourself . Of course they are heavy but I appreciate that when its windy here! Thanks for your write up!
I own one its an old beast
These okd bikes have still got a following which is nice to see. Check out my other videos regarding this bike! Thanks for your time!

What a wonderful bike! The FJ1200 is simply timelessly beautiful and yours is in great condition. Great video!
Thanks mate! Have done a more recent vid regarding the FJ. Check it out when you have time.

late 90s - 2010s bikes are the best looking for sure.
They have certainly lost their way today. Thanks for watching!
Have same bike same color ..77k miles
Great man! A keeper! Thanks for your support!
i have red :-)
Red is a beautiful colour! Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Yes of course its still worth it. Its a very iconic bike with a great pedigree.
It certainly is matey! Thanks for your support!
By the way the drone images are top notch!
Thanks for that!
How nice for you, Andrew, to live and work in Sweden, especially in the south where it's easy to drive to Copenhagen or Jönköping. Seeing you ride makes me want to ride, so when I finish my work today I will saddle up my VFR for another short road trip in the beautiful Indian summer weather.
Where are you then?
@@andrewonmyway8184 Enschede, the Netherlands, but We used to spend our holidays near Jönköping and I had friends in Norrahammar. That is some time ago, I might add, but still nice to see the familiar Swedish countryside
Nice to hear that! Thanks for sharing!
As good as the 5th and 6th gen VFR 800s were they are 20+ years old tech in the case of the 6th gen. I too have an '04 bike the exact same as yours silver mint with 17k miles on the clock. The modern electronic gadget I wish that it had is cruise control but you can only have CC if your bike has a ride by wire throttle which the VFR doesn't. On a long day in the saddle cruise control is so welcome. Have it on my Speed Triple RS and it is a revelation and also in my car. You can take your hand off the throttle or your foot off the accelerator minimising aches and pains. Also most bikers are now buying adv bikes as they don't want the bent over cramped riding position of sports tourers let alone sports bikes. They want a more upright relaxed riding position so sales of new sports tourers are pretty low mainly because there are so few on the market now. Maybe only the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX or the Suzuki Hayabusa? I think a successor to the 6th gen VFR would be one of the very last VFR800s which might have cruise control not sure but Honda stopped making them as they weren't prepared to put money into making their VFR engine Euro 4 or 5 compliant. Also later 8th gen maybe lost some of the soul of the 5th and 6th gen bikes. I have Staintune exhausts on mine which sound awesome and look almost factory spec. The bike market is in free fall atm. The bikes that seem to be selling are the much lower capacity and power 350 and 650cc REs and CF Moto which do nothing for me. Triumph has brought out 400cc bikes. I think bigger displacement bikes will become even more expensive as sales drop and manufacturers need to maintain profitability. Mine's definitely a keeper.
Thanks Alex for watching and your very knowledgeable comment. We are certainly in changing times when bikes sales are concerned. The smaller adventure bike market seems to be selling well . People seem to be down sizing. As you say sitting upright is certainly more comfortable. I can see the Chinese motorcycles putting a big dent in the Jap. MC sales especially when you look at the quality of the bikes being made today. The VFRs will hopefully still have a following in the future and people will appreciate the glorious character the bike gives to the rider!
Funny I have a VFR800 6th gen too and plan on getting an FJ1200 as well haha. Iconic bikes. My dream bike is a VFR400R 😊 one day... one day...😊
Thanks for watching! There are so many second hand cracking machines out there .Of course they might need a bit more time to look after but they hate more character! The FJ is a great bike too. Check out my vids on that! The VFR 400 is certainly worth waiting and saving for. Thanks for watching!
I love the fj1200 I bought one a few weeks ago and am loving it . Never had a vfr
Great comments I agree get a bike that you can ride instead of a bike that does all the riding and you're just a passenger to the electronics.👍👍
Thanks mate!
Where did you get the wheel 17?
Sorry. I meant 16 inch rear of course!
What tyre you have in the rear?
Avon Storm 3D X-M 150/70 ZR17
I have an FJ I’ve had it from 96 a real workhorse, never let me down
Good to hear that. I was riding to and from work yesterday. Autumn here now and it was pissing down. I was glad to be on the FJ that day. Such a stable bike! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips am looking at a '92 with low mileage Safe riding
Your welcome. Check out my other vids regarding this bike! Good luck!!
Have you re-greased the engine mounts? I usually re-grease the mounts on my fj once a year do to the heat from the engine, only takes me about 20-30min to get it done. Mine is an 92 3xw with 144000km, owned mine for 12 years now.
No I haven't but I will certainly try that. She certainly deserves that after all the loyal service I've had. Thanks for that tip mate!
La giusta cura, come alla mia FJ 1200 del '86, e non vi tradirà mai!! 💯/💯 😉👍
Thanks mate. You are right there!
Thanks for the vid, i'm about to buy a '89 FJ. While I am Not a mechanic I know what to do in theory. Gotta start somewhere I guess.
Give it a good run and a good going over. If it's from 89 there must be some new better updates on it. Hopefully it will last many years to come. Good luck!
Thank you for capturing my beauriful beach ❤
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for this Video 😊. Ride safe.
Thanks mate!
Hi Andrew, great video , thanks for posting it, any word of part 2?
Will try and get a part 2 together very soon! Thanks for watching !
@@andrewonmyway8184 That's great news :) Thanks Andrew
missed a pointer to the motor mounts. especially on 90+ bikes those front mounts besides the exhaust headers get really stuck and amplify vibrations ^^
Thanks. That's great input! Vibrations are a pain on this bike at certain speeds. Got a new video coming this week!
1987 brought a new blue one 550,px my lc350 ypvs for it ,cost £2995,did dispatch riding ,the bike was amazing in all weather sun and snow, did 2 years 3 winters, good times........
They were great workhorses back then. Always felt silky smooth. I did two years in the 80s using a GT and a Z400F. Have a new video coming on the GT soon. Thanks for watching mate.!
What tool are you suggesting for removing the stud bolts on down pipes ?
Any decent stud bolt remover should do. I was removing my exhaust at the time and had the bike. in my workshop so stainless studs have made life a lot easier . Of course there is a risk the old bolts could snap when removing. But I was lucky! Thanks for watching!
I have one of these . Bought it last week . I love it
That's nice to hear. Hope you are lucky with your bike!
Pas la bonne méthode,nul!
Thanks!
La FJ 1200 " 1TX " IL 3" Cilindro fa un rumore metallico :cosa può essere ? ❤
How many km has it done ? Surely it must be cam chain rattling due to the tensioner parts needing replacing. They are noisy engines. But don’t ever neglect the cam chain tensioner. Good luck and thanks for your support !
Joy to ride I still ride mine who is now almost 40 years old
Yes they were good bikes in their day. Nice to hear there are others still around. Is it G1 you have too?
Why do you record yourself breathing ? Spoils the vid.
To prove i am alive. Thanks for watching.
I think it makes the video look authentic! Great video, from the first to the last shot.
Where is the bottom fairing ?
It's back on now. Easy to damage it on my ramp!
@@andrewonmyway8184 Can I see it with fairing on ?
Do you think this bike uses a lot of petrol? Or just normal?
Like a small car but it's worth it! Cheers!
It's my first bike. Great machine. 24 years old and runs like a new with 40000 miles on the clock.
Great to hear that! Ride safe!
Quelle belle chose 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Merci!
Thanks for posting this. I miss my FJ. It's been almost 20 years since I last did that.
Cheers and thanks for watching and your support!
What tyres do you use....
Storm 3d AV 66 R16 back AV 65 front. Bit limited with 16 inch rear. Had Bridge battle BT46 not radial and they were great but wore quickly. I like the Avons they seem to last well. Thanks!
i got a busted FJ1200 and I'm using this vid for inspiration
Thanks. Hopefully you'll find some cheaper parts! Good luck
I have an 86 fj1200 sat for 17 years with fuel in it. Where do you order rebuild kits?
There was also the GT750 model which was in Australia unambiguously voted bike of the year in 1982. It was a great touring bike and much cheaper then the BMW R100 bikes of the time.
I think both the GT550 and 750 sold in great numbers because of the shaft drive and reliability. It would be fun to ride the 750 one day to compare. Thanks for watching !
Sorry Andrew but that's an incorrect chain tensioner description unless your bike is totally different spec than the UK 🤓you don't tension the chain that way, there's a pinch bolt behind the sprocket to loosen off and then you use a C spanner to rotate the wheel forwards or backwards to get the tension you require then torque the pinch bolt back up to secure the wheel ..👌
Hi thanks for watching. I have not mentioned any information regarding chain tensioning here only that I had fitted a new one. Cheers !
Hi Andrew, sorry I posted my comment to another of your videos by mistake the one about 10 things you like about the VFR. It's my mistake as I'd watched two different videos and got mixed up..Still incorrect on how to tension the chain in said video btw.. 🏍️
Thanks for your support!
Nice bike. Thanks for the tips 👍🏻
No problem 👍
Im on the lookout for tips and mods. I just bought a 1991 FJ1200 today off a retired bike mechanic. Its only got 48000km on it, mint condition well cared for. Its blue/white. Scored it for $3500, which imo is a bargain considering its condition. (Bikes are often expensive here in New Zealand). Initially what blew me away, ok the power, but the smoothness. Effortless motorway cruising. Now i can get out of the city, i didn't before coz my daily was a VL250 intruder 😂.
Wow seems like you found yourself a keeper there.48 000km.! Barely run in! Hopefully you will enjoy the bike just how she is for now . At least there is loads of info out there regarding improvements. Yes the engine is very smooth even if they are over 30 years old . Going from a 250 is certainly a power upgrade. Hope you are lucky with the bike. You certainly have super roads in NZ.!
