AC in Italy has an Italian protagonist, AC in Egypt has an Egyptian one, AC in Greece has two protagonists both of which are Greek and then comes AC in Japan...something that was requested forever, and Ubisot goes for like the one black man in all of Japan as one of the main characters. I don't understand how no one in the entire leadership team did not make it clear that this is a bad idea.
Leadership clearly didn't know anything. Indicative of the current day management attitude of "I'm not here to make decisions, that's what everyone else is for."
They mixed up their identity politics. They thought shoving a black into Japan was more woke and more "inclusive". Not realizing that it's literally taking Japanese culture and installing a random black person as a major representative of it... LOL
"historical African slave who became a full fledge samurai"..... Wasn't this debunked and wasn't the "specialist" claiming this revering to his own fictional work..
Yea. Yasuke certainly existed but as no more than a walking freak show that nobunaga walked around with him because most of Japan had never seen a person with black skin. Thats all he was.
@@Tixsi11 it has been debunked that he really was a samurai but who cares if it's a fictional character, as long as he is no more pictured as being an historical samurai
If we are going to look at this completely objectively, nobody can really say for sure if he was or wasn't. There is no definitive proof that supports either side. Looking at the ancient texts (which there aren't many at all), he is given a name normally reserved for samurai. But there is no record of him becoming a samurai, so it's really hard to say. The people who say they know 100% are lying
Always thought, back in the day when I fought templars as Ezio Auditore da Firenze, that Japan would be the most fitting setting for the AC series. After so many years of hopes and waiting, this is what we get, FFS.
a single Japanese male Ninja protagonist (stealth, parkour, assassinations, combat with Ninja weapons), and Ubisoft would've made bank. They would've sold so many copies. That's exactly what gamers have wanted for years. You almost have to laugh at how much work they had to do to fuck this up.
A single Japanese female ninja, a kunoichi with all the aspects of stealth, including using her femininity would have sold also as many if not more copies. Female characters well done are really popular in gaming. Guess the main problem is the black guy... which I agree was a stupid decision
Probably not. Chinese economy just keeps imploding, trillions wasted on stimulus and a couple new viruses all promise to make Trumps tarrifs all the worse for the Chinese. Also expect heavy monetization in Chinese games like Marvel Rivals.
@@SilentinthelibraryMonetization on Marvel Rivals?😂 How do you expect them to make money from free2play game? Even 100M USD they made last month is bad for a game that big.
I don't know guys, the damage is already done. To be totally honest, my problem is with the protagonists. I waited for a feudal Japan-inspired Assassin's Creed for years, but I was waiting for an actual male Japanese protagonist... there, I said it.
This was potentially the easiest low-effort win in the entire Assassins Creed franchise. Historically accurate male Shinobi warrior operating in the Sengoku era using traditional Japanese weapons; story written on the interactions between Shinobi clans, Sengoku politics, and the usual AC factions - DONE, a billion dollars in the bank. Instead, Ubisoft insists on committing financial suicide by raising its ESG score by 0.1 points. And the word 'cozy' does not need to be anywhere near an AC game.
maybe, because the developers/management felt so safe with this assassins creed game, because everyone was looking forward to the game playing in feudal japan that they realy thought they could pull off one of their biggest DEI acts without the majority complaining and still buying the game
yasuke didn't have a last name. in japan, only royal families and samurais had last names, common men did not. yasuke wasn't a samurai, he was a coomon servant.
If Ubislop really want a black main character why don't they make a game set in West Africa with historical figures like Mansa Musa one of the richest men to have ever lived. So an African assassin's creed could be really cool and interesting
Because these activists dont want to make those stories. Theyre severely adamant about inserting their politics into every historical period EXCEPT the ones that make sense because they dont wanna live in reality. They wanna make their fanfictions and be praised

It's always so funny to me how people say that The Last Samurai is a "white savior movie", because one thing very clear in the whole movie is that Algren (Tom Cruise) is the one that is actually saved in the movie. It's through his experience with the culture and his conversations with Katsumoto that he overcomes his past, they didn't need him he needed them.
Twitter loved making the white saviour argument for some reason, proving that not many people actually remember the movie, or even watched it in the first place.
People who said last samurai is Tom cruise clearly never watch the movie Tom isnt the samurai, he's the narrator, the witness of the final moment of samurai
@@potatopatato1565 I know right, the last samurai is the exact opposite of a 'white savior' movie, self destructing white guy with nothing to live for learns to live again by the influence and culture of another people
Yasuke is not even part of the assassins or heard of them until he meets Naoe. Which means he got shoehorned into the story even by the games own logic. Truly astounding
That doesn't make any sense. Nobunaga is allied to the assassin's so it doesn't make sense that yasuke wouldn't know about the group and name be the one to introduce yasuke to the brotherhood. It's been established in memories which is an official game of theirs. So basically these DEI hires do not know their own lore either.
I don't see how this is any different to any AC game since the very first one. Why can't folk stop hiding behind 'historical inaccuracy' and just say they're mad because there's a black man in the game; which is real reason why there's so much vitriol about this.
@dj33781 People aren't mad just because there's a black guy as a main chatacter. People are upset because this is a game set in Japan, you would expect the main character to be Japanese, right?
A female assassin in this era is called Kunoichi and not Shinobi since that is the male name for it, and with all the dei slop i would think this distinction would matter. I'm sure most people know this :)
DEI doesn't apply to japanese people, they are seen as the white people of asia. that's probably why ubi didn't want to give us a male japanese character.
Agree. Honestly, that is one of the most frustrating aspects of the game's marketing. Calling Naoe a FEMALE SHINOBI. There is not such thing. You either call her a female ninja or a kunoichi. It is popular culture's knowledge at this point...
Actually wrong, there was no distinction between Kunoichi and Shinobi, as Kunoichi is a made up term that was created and popularized later on, they were and are all just shinobi, and even those female shinobi are very very different to what you would think of from the little we know of them You atleast have to give Ubisoft partial credit here, i bet they did it by accident (and not actually knowing that kunoichi would be the wrong term), but atleast they are historically speaking not wrong in calling her a shinobi
I just read a comment from ubi channel or IGN and the comment was in Japanese. The comment translation says something like this, why is the slave armor is much better than his lord.
If Shadows had a male Japanese protagonist instead of the female one, I might've even bought their lie that they included Yasuke for story reasons. But they decided to make sure neither of their protagonists are Japanese men--who made up 99% of all samurai and ninja, making it a political statement.
Yasuke can perform a "brutal assassination" where it's loud compared to Naue's, however it's loud not because of the cries of the enemies, but because he starts screaming when he starts stabbing 💀💀💀
Love how all these games with badass female protagonists never have female enemies, especially grunts. If a woman can slaughter men wholesale, wouldn't any warlord with sense enlist women?
Hell. It looks like women are the only people worth having as warriors, which begs the question as to why Bad guys brother hiring men When they're physically inferior
About The Last Samurai: Cruise's character in The Last Samurai isn't based on a true story of an American soldier, but is inspired by the real history of a French Army officer named Jules Brunet. In 1866, Brunet was sent to Japan to train military forces and ultimately fought in the Boshin War after refusing orders to return home.
This reminds me of the Disney Star Wars tragedy, they were literally given liquid lightning in a bottle. They were given the alchemical formula to create gold out of dirt and instead followed a recipe to turn dirt into a steaming pile
Lighting in a bottle? The only reason George sold starwars because the reputation was in the toilet. If clone wars didn’t exist the franchise probably would have died. The reality is Disney saved starwars and made all their money back and then some with just 3 movies.

The last samurai is not a white savior movie. Anybody who says that either didn't see it or wasn't paying attention. He gets captured and has one of those cases of Stockholm syndrome.
It was almost "dances with samurai" in how the story was framed as though the narrator has his own motivations and character arc he isn't the main focus. If I remember correctly, Cruise Character was either a drunk or had problems which lead him to a fight he couldn't win, so his Stockholm was a direct coping mechanism.
People complaining about the female Shinobi need to stop. There is nothing wrong with making the ninja character a female. It assassin's creed set in a fictional timeline. The complaints about Yasuke are valid. Assassin's creed protagonists have always been fictional people who meet and befriend real historical people. They decided to make you play as a historical figure this time, and did not stay true to the actual history of the man.

Same here but Ubisoft killed the franchises hope for quality after AC2 when they decided to do brotherhood and make it a yearly thing cause of popularity and sales, it went for AC 1 and 2 being worked on by one Ubisoft team ( Montreal ) to many different Ubisoft studios working on many games at the same time to meet yearly release schedule, though I love BH and revelations it should’ve never existed as the AC games were only supposed to ever be a trilogy, many say the series died when Desmond did but I think otherwise, if it went as planned and all we got was a trilogy of Desmond’s story I think it would’ve been better and now the modern day is basically dead and a afterthought Valhalla tried to bring back the end of the world scenario again like really? if anything at all it was better when the isu were a mystery and secret and 3 games were all we needed to tell the story now it’s a whole lot of nothing
Yeah I remember playing AC back on the PS2 when it first came out. Loved the concept, the onion like mystique. Looking at the trailer it just seems like they're doing the same thing as anyone else instead of identifying the strengths of the brand. The mysterious nature of AC really doesn't seem to be respected here, I don't know why they're just trying to be like everyone else when they have such a unique franchise.
Having a black samurai makes me question where their development focus was at.... You even pointed it out "combat looks like trash", then 5 min later you find out that instead of focusing on making top tier combat they added animal crossing to the game. It looks to me like none of the focus was on making an AC game. I'll just play GofT over again instead lol
EDIT: To the fools in the comment section thinking I’m arguing that the protagonist’s ethnicity should match the game’s location, but that’s not my point. Maybe I should've been more accurate, but to hell with that I am on YT and not at the university. What I’m saying is that a protagonist’s ethnicity should reflect the culture, traditions, and history relevant to the story being told (as UBISOFT claims). For example, in Black Flag, Edward Kenway is Welsh because many pirates of the Golden Age were from Wales or England, even though the game is set in the Caribbean. Similarly, Eivor in Valhalla is Norse, tied to Viking culture and them raiding, even as the story takes place across England. Historically, civilizations were far more homogeneous than they are today. Most people lived within their own ethnic and cultural groups, with very limited interaction or mixing outside of those. It’s unrealistic to assume that individuals from completely different backgrounds would often hold central roles in representing a culture’s traditions or values. Even when there were people of other ethnicities within a civilization, they were typically a minority and often oppressed or marginalized. They wouldn’t have had the same opportunities to fully participate in society, let alone become the central figures representing the traditions or values of that culture. For example, a non-Japanese character in feudal Japan wouldn’t realistically have been in a position to represent samurai culture or play a leading role in that society’s traditions. In the same way, if a game were set in Japan, it would make sense for the protagonist to be Japanese, not just because of the location, but because the story would explore Japanese traditions like the samurai code and the politics of feudal Japan. The focus is on telling an authentic and culturally accurate story, not just where the game happens to take place. There is so many significant japanese historical figures, but UBISOFT had to go woke and diversity. Whine all you want, the same way you do and did when Resident Evil 5 took place in Africa. How dare the protagonist kills black people IN Africa. That doesnt make sense right?! EDIT DONE. ORIGINAL POST: *Summary AC games and protagonist (Animus) ethnicity:* - AC 1 Middle East: Main protagonist is Middle Eastern - AC 2 Italy: Main protagonist is an Italian - AC3 Amurica: Half English, half Native American - AC 4 Black Flag: Main protagonist British born in Wales. - AC Unity France: Main protagonist is French. - AC Origins Egypt: Main protagonist is Egyptian. - AC Odyssey Greece: Main protagonist is Greek. - AC Valhalla Norway: Main protagonist is Norse. - AC Shadows Japan: Main protagonist is black???????????????

I usually agree with Asmon but I disagree on it NOT being malicious. It clearly was malicious and calculated from the beginning. There were too many deliberate decisions. They were testing how much they could get away with and only stopped when there was pushback. It was not innocent They *specifically* targeted Japan/Samurai period because A) they knew gamers were WAITING for AC in Japan (people have been asking for over a decade). So, they figure it’s the BEST time for propaganda given the high demand (“ppl will buy it anyway” ) B) it’s the ultimate FU to a conservative, preserved culture, the Japanese culture. and C) they know Japanese culture/people are not very “confrontational” and were trying to take advantage of that.
What a weird mindset, lol. Who was being malicious specifically? The artists? The writers? The director? If you take issue with more than one aspect of the game, you must think there was some coordinated effort between multiple departments to make the game as disrespectful as possible? You have lost your mindddd.
It's just ridiculous that they never had a single thought anywhere along the process of this game's development that Yasuke being a prevalent, playable character was a terrible idea... Literally every other mainline AC has featured appropriate cultural representation for the cultural themes they chose for it. Why do the Japanese, then, get shafted when it's their turn? The fact that they didn't choose to remove Yasuke as a playable character -- or otherwise push him towards DLC or something like they did with Adewale for Black Flag -- the moment they decided to push the game back by 4 (now a total of 6) months back, just further proves how stupid they are. The hell was even the point of the delays if it wasn't to retcon the shit people were upset about? Insane.
I think this argument is over reaching the justified criticism. In most games you wear your battle gear everywhere because it's more convenient in gameplay, Skyrim, The Witcher, Dragon Age (the good ones) and even Ghost of Tsushima do this
I think it looks pretty good from what's being shown, certainly a lot better than I would have expected. However, what we're shown is the best, most polished view of the game. Time will tell if this presentation survives contact with an actual playerbase.
@ even if that’s true how does that factor into the game? Yasuke obviously isn’t a direct pull from the history books and this isn’t the first time they have altered a historical figure to make them cooler or different for one of their games. Any person they would choose to be the main character would be different from their real life counterpart as no one is capable of killing 100 people by themselves, surviving multiple sword wounds, etc. its a fictional game my guy. If they would’ve chosen some random historic Japanese guy that was a rice farmer and not a samurai u wouldn’t have anything to say about it.
@@Sunshinus This is something videogame higher-ups seem to never get, sales of a sequel are mostly because of the previous entries. If the game is dogshit but the previous one was popular, it'll sell well anyways. An example of this is Pokemon doing the bare minimum but still having increasing sales due to their good legacy. However, if you put trash after trash, someday people will realize, specially if there's competition from other developers, and will stop putting up with the devs bullshit. Of course, there're multiple variables that may elongate the time it takes the franchise to touch ground such as the playerbase target (kids are stupid), niche genres (low competition means people defending crap), and nostalgia/long playtime (if you've put 5000 hours in a game, you're more inclined to keep playing and defend it to avoid thinking you've lost that much time in a shity game). As for Ubisoft falling down with microtransactions, for me I agree. Microtransactions do not have place on single player games, because at the moment you buy it, it's yours. You have, or should have, the right of modifying it for any personal purpose. Thus, people should be free to add +1000 on the attack property of any weapon if they desire to do so. They wouldn't, fact is, you can not become a Samurai without being Born to it by Blood, especially A SLAVE AS HE WAS. IN FACT Sasuke means helper. That's all he was. He was allowed to carry around his masters sword. No one can become a Samurai unless Japanese Born. My Wife Is Japanese, we have had a lot of discussions about this. Her family is descendant from Samurai in the southern tip of mainland Japan. Shimonoseki. It was a very large Samurai town back in that age. UBI fucked this all up and they rightfully deserve all the backlash they are getting over this.
Not only that, but yasuke was only in Japan for at most 3 years and was only under Oda Nobunaga for a single year. He's not going to be well known, have much respect, or likely really much of anything since he probably barely even knew a few words in his time there, if any. They don't often really teach slaves a lot of a foreign language especially if it's a temporary situation. William Adams spent 4 years as a navigator and advisor to become a samurai and even that could be considered quick, and yet we are supposed to believe someone who is considered a slave was allowed to earn the status in a year? At most he was just a weapon bearer due to Oda being marveled that a black person actually existed and found him entertaining.
I respect Black people... but if I were Japanese and played this game where I had to role-play as an African person killing Japanese people, I would feel physically uncomfortable.

Except, Jacob was still able to stealth and do proper assassinations like an "assassin". Not as good as his sister, but still he could pull it off. Whereas this black samurai who is completely out of place in this game, not "historically accurate" as Ubisoft claimed otherwise can't even climb, barely run with all that armor, no assassination without drawing the attention of every enemy in the area, yet every bit as nimble and fast as Naoe... This is nothing like Syndicate, it's similar but far from it. They really are out of touch with everything. Especially with their player base, they keep ignoring.

This review isn't doing Ubisoft any favors with once again claiming Yasuke was a "full fledged samurai", something Ubisoft themselves have tried to back away from.
It really bothers me that Ubisoft changed the ending. Naoe and Yasuke were supposed to get married at the end and have mixed-race children, a typical light-skinned woman and black man, just like every couple should look today. But this was removed from the game. Nobody will get the MESSAGE that way!!
1:50 where the Japanese character says, "The black soldier is not one of us. Send him back to where he belongs." I'm guessing this is at the end of the game, after Yasuke is captured. Mitsuhide did not have him killed after Nobunaga's death because he said Yasuke was not Japanese and his life should be sparred. He then handed him to the Jesuits who took him away from Japan. As for Tom Cruise being labeled a white savior... did the person who wrote this comment even watch the movie? Man, seeing grown men cry in the theater here in Japan back when that movie came out was something. It was more about a Western person understanding the damage they were causing by trying to force people to abandon their way of life in exchange for what they thought was civilized. That shift in Japan from old traditions to adopting western culture was very contentious. The attempts to modernize and industrialize Japan after sakoku ended divided Japan in a lot of ways. I think The Last Samurai does a great job showing the damage of this forced change in 19th century Japan.

Every single AC game has been historical fiction. There's an in game disclaimer and everything...
If we are going to look at this completely objectively, nobody can really say for sure if he was or wasn't. There is no definitive proof that supports either side.
Ikr they scream about Yasuke being ReAl and how its historically accurate but cant get architecture and names right 🤪
Yes it is
Actually wrong, there was no distinction between Kunoichi and Shinobi, as Kunoichi is a made up term that was created and popularized later on, they were and are all just shinobi, and even those female shinobi are very very different to what you would think of from the little we know of them
You atleast have to give Ubisoft partial credit here, i bet they did it by accident (and not actually knowing that kunoichi would be the wrong term), but atleast they are historically speaking not wrong in calling her a shinobi

About The Last Samurai:
Cruise's character in The Last Samurai isn't based on a true story of an American soldier, but is inspired by the real history of a French Army officer named Jules Brunet. In 1866, Brunet was sent to Japan to train military forces and ultimately fought in the Boshin War after refusing orders to return home.

EDIT DONE.

I usually agree with Asmon but I disagree on it NOT being malicious. It clearly was malicious and calculated from the beginning. There were too many deliberate decisions. They were testing how much they could get away with and only stopped when there was pushback. It was not innocent
They *specifically* targeted Japan/Samurai period because A) they knew gamers were WAITING for AC in Japan (people have been asking for over a decade).

Insane.

Ubisoft fell off the moment they introduced microtransactions to single-player campaign games
They Fell off before that, but mtx in singleplayer Was another big step down
True, but sales disagree
Yep
I hope Ubisoft is bought by Tencent or whoever wants it to do some proper Rayman.
For me it's the moment they forced an online connection to their crappy servers for a singleplayer game. So AC2.
Just replay Ghost of Tsushima. I'm glad to see Ubisoft spent time and money trying to be animal crossing versus fixing it's botched combat and animations.
Fully agree. This seems like a shameless attempt to cash in on Ghosts success.

This is insane rewriting of history on both sides and its childish. You dont gotta ridicule yasuke to contrast the insane notiong he was a samurai. Yasuke was nobounagas retainer, that is an incredibly honor, we know he was trained in the persian way of combat(no samurai) and that he was tall and as strong as 5 men(historical record not me). He was a coop hiatorical figure. He wasnt a samurai and he didnt fight like one.
If Yasuke and the other controversies around this game didn't exist, this trailer MIGHT have made me interested in the game.
I can't see myself as a cosplaying black guy pretending to be a japanese samari, and I was told by gaming journalists it's important for visibility and crucial that we can see ourselves in the characters we play. I guess this game wasn't made for me.
By that logic i shouldn't play the game because I'm white. Okay no problem. I won't buy it.
People BEGGED for an Assassin's Creed set in Japan because they wanted to play as a Japanese Samurai. Instead they give us a black dude and a woman. Neither of which we want to play.
I want to play as the kunoichi.... So does millions of people too. So don't put words on my mouth please. Plus, people wanted a AC in Japan because they wanted to play as a NINJA, not a samurai. We got our ninja, she is female, which is fine and even good. Kunoichi, female ninjas were a thing. If you want to play as a samurai, go for Ghost of Tsushima.
More painful, that woman is NOT Japanese. My theory is she's a Pacific Islander and she's not hitting that distinctive Japanese accented English.

he can be samurai but a main character should be a guy who was born in that country
Why are we acting like all the AC games are based on historical realism
Assassins creed franchise itself is not historically accurate. Should they have had yasuke as the protagonist in ac first Japanese era game, no. It shouldn't even be a concern if yasuke is historically accurate in a historical FICTION game. I think he would be received better if he was a bpc we interact with..

Japanese samurai in these era are so brutal in history, they even have privilege to "test" thier new sword into thier own villager, that show how they treated each with thier born status is, can't image they let a black slave be a samurai
My thoughts exactly. Japan was quite intense on these matters.

@ ... in syndicate both characters could do most things only their combat and special skills were different - while here Yasuke can't climb and parkour properly...
This review isn't doing Ubisoft any favors with once again claiming Yasuke was a "full fledged samurai", something Ubisoft themselves have tried to back away from.
"That was worth the wait", nope... no it was not.
