From what I remember of reading the book, it's much clearer that it's just Bridget who sees herself that way - throughout it she's tracking her weight, and at one point her friends tell her they're worried about how thin she's getting. It's a good commentary on diet culture/body image etc. but just didn't translate super well to the movie 😬
@@elisabethgreeno I just remember how it was a huge deal in every talkshow that Rene Zellweger gained soooooo much weight for the role and how huge she was and how she lost the weight again and so on.
@@wiebki Oh yeah that was inarguably absolutely fucked - and you just know that even if the film had conveyed the book's point better, the press would still have totally focused on that 🙃 I wonder how many of us have that memory lodged in our brains, festering. Also just want to add that I do love this movie - realised I've just popped up and kinda criticised it WHOOPS
Bridget Jones is basically the modern version of Pride and Prejudice. The ‘I like you just as you are’ is basically Mr Darcy’s botched proposal and Daniel cheating with Mark’s wife is when Wickham tried to cop off with Mr Darcy’s sister in the novel. The fight scene was originally going to be choreographed with stunt men but Hugh and Colin said that wouldn’t be realistic so instead they just fought like children in the film and it makes it more funnier because it is in reality how people actually fight.
42:29 Bryce giggling at his own joke is fucking adorable. “Their Firth kiss” 😂 Also, obsessed with how equally offended you all were by the “I thought you said she was thin” line. That line outraged (or really, gaslit) an entire generation of women.
@@meganbrick6266 yeah it’s awful and I mean unfortunately curvier women especially in the 2000s were lead to believe that they were “fat” just because they had curves which is absolutely absurd tbh

Now you guys need to watch the BBC miniseries of “Pride & Prejudice” to find out why it’s hilarious and perfect casting that Colin Firth played Mark *Darcy* in this film…
I think the flashing blue lights are because Bridget lives just under a railway bridge and its the flashes from the train going by above. Her flat is so iconic, its just on the edge of borough market which is a popular market in London. That's also why she was walking through it in her bunny costume (the peaky blinders place) so that she could get home. Loved the reaction such a good romcom!
Miss Congeniality first and now Bridget Jones's Diary? Two of my favorite movies!! Thank you guys for bringing so much joy these days ❤ Great reaction as always
Renée kept up the accent all throughout filming. Once everyone gathered for the wrap-up party, she finally dropped the accent. Hugh Grant was actually shocked she wasn't really British. He was quite impressed.
she doesnt sound at all "British" to me, its so... mouthy and jumps on words between posh and cockney. Beside the fact that "british" accent isnt even a thing one could have. Theres at least 30 accents specific to England, let alone adding Wales and Scotland into the mix.
@@McRino1There is a "typical" British accent for people outside of Britain. It likely depends on the one each country was introduced to. It's normal for countries that were once part of The British Empire and were once Englishmen to have a British accent they favor -- usually, it's The Queen's English (aka BBC English). It's not that we don't know there are other accents in Britain. It's the one we know as The Proper English Accent. Hope that helps
Considering she's born and raised in Texas (Katy, a Houston suburb) and Austin (where she attended and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin🤘), I think her British accent is pretty good. It's hard to overcome a deep Texas accent. And most folks I've met from upper middle-class Katy, TX, have a very strong Texas twang.🤠
You guys need to know that this movie (and the book) are a modern version of Pride and Prejudice. And Colin Firth became famous for playing Fitzwilliam Darcy, a very aristocratic and socially uptight man who falls in love with a woman from a family considered less wealthy and of not the same social standing. So there is a reason Mark Darcy is stand offish and difficult.
Fun fact: When Helen Fielding was writing this book, she had Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in mind when she wrote those characters!! Also, a "Tarts and Vicars" party is (or was) an actual thing in Britain.
The blue flashing lights… Bridget lives right next to an electrified railway line on a bridge that sometimes flash blue with discharge when trains pass by, which can be seen in her apartment and the street on which she lives. There are dozens of these dotted around London and you can see a train pass over the bridge outside her apartment in the scene where the taxi drops her off drunk.
I was sooo excited when I saw the boys watching Bridget Jones, but right from the get to go they started talking about actors and other stuff and were missing the plot 😭😭😭 Felt high level of frustration as if I was watching my favorite movie with my bestie and she was talking the whoooole time

And when he came back, his image was reconstructed into the bad boy a-hole stereotype we all know and love to hate today. And as you see, he's great in these roles. haha
Know what’s funny? In the book she interviewed Colin Firth (I think) but obviously they can’t have Colin Firth star as himself when he’s already playing Mark Darcy 😂😂😂

The thought of Colin Firth being on the wall randomly and it being called a "spider wall" KILLED ME lmao I was almost crying. Good to have Zuff back!!!
The movie is from the novel by Helen Fielding and of course she got inspiration from Pride and prejudice. She said that she had been always thinking of Colin Firth's Darcy while writing, so when she agreed on making the movie, she did with one condition: he had to star as Mark. PS and that's why he is so aloof, just like Darcy in P&P
This is in my top three favourite movies of all time. I see so much of myself in Bridget Jones, especially as I get older and my life gets more chaotic. Yeah any time an American asks me about best British accents by an American it's Renee Zellweger in these movies, or Alan Tudyk in anything he's ever done. A Knight's Tale, Death at a Funeral, Rogue One etc. He is perfect
That film Bridget Jones was watching where that woman gets shot. That is the 1987 film, Fatal Attraction starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. Brilliant film.
Also for the blue lights being lightning I’m pretty sure it’s because of the music video for It’s Raining Men which was set in the rain as far as I remember but I haven’t watched the music video to that song in ages. I could be wrong but I think that was maybe an influence to that scene ❤
Sadly I agree about the kiss at the end...I've always loved this movie so I have seen it multiple times and always look away at that moment to imagine a better kiss...😬

We are so happy that you're back Zuff.
This movie came out when I was 16, and Renee Zellweger was being called “plus size” and “fat” 😮 We were so warped back then
She got so much praise for gaining like 20 pounds for this (she did it by eating Krispy Kreme according to her in an interview)
