My favorite Bball moment, was a High School alumni tourney, where we siblings made up a whole team. (6 of us) It was a moment for Mom that was the best! We have huge age gaps, and never really played together, even at home; didn't even practice before the tourney. We made the finals against all male teams my age. (Half my siblings age.) A magic day. Thanks for the trip down memory lane blokes!
Should be noted that the way these kinds of things normally work is the sponsors fronting the money actually buy a special insurance policy designed for these types of competitions from an insurance company. It's typically an insurance company that cuts the check for whoever the sponsor of the shot attempt was. In fact, it's not uncommon for insurance companies to be the actual sponsors for these kinds of contests.
The premiums the sponsors pay is a small fraction of the prize amount, but the insurers work out the risk assessment, so generally the sponsors are still spending enough in premiums over time to make money for the insurance company (while getting advertising in the process), but the insurers are able to spread out the risk and losses over many shot attempts throughout the course of the season.
The team's get some free or even profitable half-time entertainment (depending on the sponsorship deal), and some lucky fans actually win some big money or nice vehicles.

As far as I'm aware, contests like these are more of an insurance thing. An insurer will calculate the odds of someone winning and how much they will win and then charge an amount to the venue or sponsor to insure the contest. If the contestant doesn't make the shot, the insurer makes some money, if he does make the shot, they have to pay out. I have no idea how much they charge.
People who win big prizes like Cars often end up having to sell them just to satisfy the taxes that are due.

Due to taxes many cars are immediately sold back to the dealer for bluebook value which is significantly less than actual price.

Friend of mine won a new car at a college football game by throwing a paper airplane into the sun roof. Someone bought the car from him before he left the stadium since it was in team colors.

I was there for the first one at OKC. That guy won $20k if I remember correctly, and Kevin Durant, who played for the Thunder at the time, ran up to him later on and gave him a high five and yelled at him, "That was awesome!" lol. But I have to say, my favorite part was Lebron James giving that guy a hug and tackling him to the court. That alone would be worth the make on the half court shot!
I was thinking about it, and if you can find it, I'd like to see you guys react to College Humor's "Prank War". It involved two of the CH actors, Amir and Streeter, it spanned around a few years, and it escalates in a pretty entertaining way. Definitely worth checking out. Cheers, blokes!

Bill Simmons did a feature story on this. He took the shot at a Clippers game and said that the depth perception of shooting in an NBA arena makes this much harder than it looks. Obviously, the players get used to this, but if you only get one shot at it you are likely to over compensate one way or the other. Like, you guys said none of this comes out of the team's pockets, it is all sponsorhips. However, at some big time college games kids shoot for tuition. Some have been full scholarships. When those happen it goes NUTS!
Still the best to do it is the kid in the hotdog suit who ran game on the in arena announcer just before hitting the shot

The teams pay 100 bucks for insurance. Even for the big payouts because people rarely make it
Giving away an expensive car is such a scam. Game shows do the same thing. You still have to pay the tax on it which most people don't want to do, so they take a much smaller sum of money.

My proudest sports moment was when me and my brother got to shoot pucks from center ice at small goals during a hockey game. After sinking my shot to win I turned around and took one of my brothers pucks and scored in his goal too and the crowd went nuts
