A watcher from Finland here! The book page scraps you were using on the cover spread were in Finnish and I was like wait? Am I seeing my language there? 😂 I always love your reading journal spreads! They give me a lot of inspiration into my own journal ❤ Love from Finland!

for horror recs: into the drowning deep by mira grant is a thriller that's also somehow a love letter to science, but definitely wouldn't recommend it if you're uncomfortable with deep ocean expeditions, things lurking underwater, etc. i also highly recommend we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson! i'd go into it without looking up anything in advance, though, since there's a pretty famous twist. really interesting character work. finally, i'd recommend little eve by catriona ward for more amazingly written characters and a gothic atmosphere -- definitely check the trigger warnings beforehand, though i will say that a lot of the true evil happens off-page.

You nailed the issues with Mistborn! I’m a die hard Sanderson fan, but nothing about that series passes the Bechdel test. However, Vin grows an incredible amount in the next two books (that 3rd book!) and you will gain so much more respect for her.

Great video! That scene in The Duke and I has always been controversial. I haven’t read it in years and I can’t remember exactly how they handled it in the show but I think it was still problematic. I wanna reread and watch it now 😅 … And recently I read The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer, couldn’t put it down. It’s a good fall/winter portal fantasy read. I think this might be a favorite of the year. ✌🏽+❤

Honestly, I feel like it was worse in the show because they made Simon a Black man, so now the scene is a white woman assaulting a Black man. 🫤

Spoilers! I have just finished watching the series (have not read the books) and as I remember it: Daphne did take advantage of him when he was drunk in order to get pregnant. And they fought a lot over it, afterwards. But then she got her period so she did not become pregnant from that time (although that doesn't justify what she did). After that they fought and eventually talked it out (don't rembember all the details about this though) and Simon agreed to have a child later. I don't think what Daphne did was right or okay, but I can understand her. She had not been taught how babies were made and before marriage, Simon had said to her that he could not have babies, and later she said something like this to him: "There's a difference between can't and won't". Because he had basically lied to her, and I don't think that was okay from Simon's side either. Daphne really wanted to have children and she was gonna give that up for him. So I can understand that she got really upset when she found out that he had lied to her, but I don't think she handled it in a good way.

I read all of the Bridgerton books this year, and I gave The Duke and I 2.5 stars. The show did have a similar scene to the book, just that Simon wasn't drunk, I believe. Regardless, Daphne is my least favourite Bridgerton because of that scene, but The Duke and I wasn't my least favourite of the series...

I really liked all the spreads you did this time. The cover page is very beautiful as always, and it was fun to see you use so much red for the Cut & Thirst spread.
I've been considering getting into the Mistborn saga but I'm intimidated by the size of the books and how many there are. There's a lot of books set in the same universe and I am a completionist and would love to read all of them but... that's a LOT of pages to read haha.

    Hi Hedda!
I think I will also put „Mistborn“ on my TBR.
For Fantasy I always recommend „Sword of Truth“ series by Terry Goodkind. I rarely see it, so I feel like its not that popular… the german version had 16 books, the newer version 11 books, so its a long read!
I really loved it though and the series accompanied me for many years (incl waiting for books to be released). After that many years I felt really sad when the series ended, because I got so attached to the characters…
(The TV Show was really bad… dont look into it)
For spooky I enjoyed „I remember you“ by Yrsa Sigurdadottir, I liked how the storylines came together at the end. And I think it was a really spooky ghost story. It is set on an isolated fjord in Iceland.

And i totally agree with your opinion about the thing in the Duke and I, i thought that scene was so...wrong and i am sure everyone would be terrified if Daphne's action was done by a man...i feel like she got away so easily with that, it was dissapointing.

Definitely a grey area. It was the job of women in that era to produce heirs. He mislead her. He lead her to believe he couldn't have children, not that he didn't want children. She was also naive and didn't realize at first thatche was preventing them from having children. Neither were in the right.

Loved this video as always! And felt the same thing about the characters and how not a lot of them are in it when reading Bridgerton from liking the show... and someone told me... "We know the other characters from the show but you have to remember that When this first came out we didn't know the others or the personalities and things like that which is why she wrote about them after. She had a plan and executed it. and we jumped to the end and watched." and that really put it into perspective for me. So even though we know them and their stories when the first book came out in 2000 we didn't. and thats the downside to watching a movie or show before reading the stories. You know it to some extent already and are expecting things, when in reality they hadn't happened yet when the stories were being published :) and I know try and remember that when going back to read things I see or watch hahaha. But I also have the same outlook on Daphanies character.

I have to unearth the videos about Bridgerton, but have no idea where they've gone, those I watched years ago, even before it became a show. Making several attempts at reading (and I was avid reader of historical romance at that time), but she was, unfortunately, not my cup of tea.. And then I saw others who read and I found that watching few videos on Bridgerton was better, it was like a satirical and hysterical drama. But the period and authors in which historical romance was written DO MATTER. Like books from 80-90'ss would not survive today, but they were a popular read back then, because everything was different back then. People would cover the covers with solid color just to hide those entangled bodies and some saucy title like Defetaed by Passion. Some of these authors are old ladies or even dead right now okay, I cut them some slack. But when I was like 16 and read some things I thought - ladies you are wild!! Early 00' and later period I noticed a big shift in popular tropes, many of the popular tropes still stayed, but there was a glimpse of not only some reckless adventure and passion and some situations that really exist only in the novel and make your eyes pop, but milder themes, mature characters and main characters are not only some dashing debutante and some very rich duke.

I just started a Brandon Sanderson myself, The Way of Kings, its 1200ish pages which I'm pretty sure will make it the longest book I've read.
And I have to recommend, because I've recently finished them, the 3 books that are out in the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. They're all very different feeling books, but still amazing, and while they're billed as "lesbian necromancers in space", the first Gideon the Ninth is really like a locked room murder mystery if the characters were determined to pretend that's not the genre they're in at all.

After 3 years or so everything you attached to the paper with the double sided tape falls off. I's much better to use glue or a glue stick, even though the pages are a bit wavy/wrinkly when everything dries.
Just a heads up: I'm not saying this to be mean, it's just a tip. I was flipping through some pages that I made years ago and what once was attached with the double sided tape flew to the floor 🥲.
    Gretel Lusky's illustrations are 😍.

I haven't read the book, but when Bridgerton season 1 came out there was a lot of discussion about that scene, and people were definitely not ok with what she did ...
In terms of Mistborn, l found it just ok, because l didn't enjoy his prose. I actually liked the first book best of the three because of the heist element.

Hi...my take on the "Bridgerton" scenerio is that the Duke had led Daphne to believe he was "unable" to produce children. He had been deceiving her. I don't believe he truly did not want kids. He was only against it because of the grudge with his father. He placed that above his & his wife's true desires, so once she found out how babies were created she took the plunge. So to speak.

Lovely spreads Hedda! I especially liked the mermaid in a teacup, so beautiful. If you are looking for Halloween book ideas I would recommend Clive Barker. Any of them are wonderful, they are often long but Cabal is fairly short. I wot give anything away but he doesn’t look at things in the way you expect. Interested about your thoughts on Mistborn, a friend recommended it to me years ago but I couldn’t get into it and only read the first chapter or two. Should try again perhaps. If you are looking for something light and easy, Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree was fun and a bit different. 😊

Yeah, the scene in the book where Daphne attempts to get pregnant in *The Duke and I* is so calculated and icky and so dated (it's very much more Old School Romance, and that book was pubbed at the very end of that kind of historical era as the subgenre was starting to change). They did modify it in the show and it's much less cringe but it does still get hand-waved away. My fave book in the series is Francesca's.

I loved the spread for Bridgerton!!! although I haven't read the book, not do I plan to do it. I love Regency romance, but Julia Quinn is not my type of author. And I agree with you on your issue with the pregnancy thing 👍 On the other hand, I disagree with that about female characters proportion in books, movies, etc. I really dislike when they put characters, female or male, just for the sake of equality. If a character is functional or necessary for the plot yes, but otherwise I have no problems with more of one or other. Obviously, this is an opinion in the broad sense of books and movies, because I haven't read Mistborn 😝 Sending you love from Chile! ❤
