A lot of you may have heard from Sigurd Snake in the eye from his portrayal in Vikings. In the show he has somewhat of an underwhelming presence compared to his brothers and end up being killed by his brother Ivar the Boneless in a petty argument. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. In this video we will be delving into Sigurd’s life according to the Old Norse and Icelandic sources and we will discover the mystery of the magical snake in his eye and the meaning behind it. This is his story.

@@Rawbchu yes but it showed the conflict between the brothers. Ivars kills sigurd... basically kills Bjorn and even Hvitserk in a way as after Ivars death, Hvitserk died and became Athelstan.
Only ubba didn't get truly caught up in that conflict, because he was what his father wanted to be.

I feel as tho all these stories we hear from chronicles and sagas should be taken with grains of salt we were not there nor was most of the world from our time or theirs things are easily lost in translation and revision. I believe it’s wonderful to think of possibilities from the few facts we concrete. Idk it just rubs me the wrong way when lies and misconceptions in todays age can be taken as truth and fact despite our resources available yet the stories of old did not have that luxury but still taken as concrete evidence

My first thought upon hearing the Vikings were going to invade Rome, but thought better of it and turned away. Was good for them, that's a smart move. But then again, if this is around 1100, Rome has grown weak at this point. But if this is wrong around the year 600. Those Vikings would have gotten smashed.

You do know the Vikings series is totally out of facts right?
Some things that need to be understood and are corroborated and is also given wrong by the OP
      1. Sigurd was Ragnar's father not Aslaug. Sigurd's uncle was Harold Wartooth who has his nephew succeed him in a war battle so that the old infirm Harold could die in battle and go to Valhalla. Harold had gotten so infirm that he had to be brought to the battle on top of a shield by his servants. This is the origin of Ivar's apparent infirmity.
      2. Ivar was not a cripple nor impotent. The guy gave rise to three Kingdoms! Strathclyde, Sudreyjar and Jarldom of Dublin. Further Ivar is the oldest.
      3. Lagertha was the homewrecker not Aslaug.
      4. Ivar was not likely Ragnar's son.... But maybe brought into the dynasty through stories.... Why else would he leave the Heathen Army after the conquest of Northumbria? He would be leading forward right?
So Ivar was likely a general of Sigurd who was promised independence and freedom after the conquest of Northumbria. Also Irish texts write down Ivar's father as a different man.
      5. Rollo was not Ragnar's brother but a descendant through Bjorn.
      6. Sigurd never went to England... His brothers Hafdan and Ubba did go. And if we consider Ivar then he too.
      7. Bjorn and Haesteinn went on raided the whole of Mediterranean going as far as the Pisan city of Luni
I can go on but I go tired

I know that they take a lot of 'creative license' when the producers put these historical series together; and therefore take that in to consideration when I get involved watching these series. They sort of 'juice' it up in order for the viewers to tune in every week. You sound quite knowledgeable yourself about the history of the Vikings. Are you a scholar, or have a PHD in historical studies? I just like history of any kind. Thank you for your comment.

@@kristinewilde8662 naah.. I just love history. I believe its because of my explorer blood😂.
My ancestor was the Portuguese explorer Francisco Almeida who found the Portuguese trading colony of Goa in India.
Btw there was also a bastard son of Hafdan known as Dyre the Stranger who set up a kingdom in Konugardr....His line made the Kingdom of Ruthenia which was eventually subsumed by the Rurikids to make Kievan Rus. While Rurik's wife was Bjorn's daughter Ingrid.

Nystagmus? There must be some misunderstanding there because nystagmus is not a physical characterstic. It's a symptom of an inner ear disorder or a pathology of the brain that causes abnormal eye movements. This affects visual acuity and balance, which would not allow a Viking to function well in his endeavours. It was probably limbal rings or perhaps even arcus senilis, but I'm just lightly speculating. Definitely would not have been nystagmus.
