How in the hell can a group of dudes who haven't all been physically together for over 30 years save a person's life? Well, 10 years ago they saved MY life. I wanted to die but somehow, I "found" Queen. And Freddie. The more I listened, the more I fell in love with the band and the music. The more I listened, the happier I felt. The more I saw, the more I imagined how terrible it would be to NOT hear them ever again. I can't imagine any of them ever heard my name, and certainly not Freddie since he died when I was only 7 years old, but SOMEHOW, these 4 guys saved my life. I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it really is true. To me, Freddie is an angel and Brian, John and Roger are exactly what Freddie said they are: the messengers of the gods.
“I hang my head and I advertise, a soul for sale or rent. I have no heart, I’m cold inside, I have no real intent” is one of the best lyrics written IMO. The official video for this song is sad and beautiful at the same time. The 1981 Montreal live performance is amazing. Please watch them.
I was going to say that the Queen Rock Montreal performance was just amazing. I love how they arranged the song for a live performance having Freddie solo on the piano replacing the multilayered guitars in the studio version. And of course Freddie's vocals are just amazing.
I'll tell you what I think IS one of the best few lines of lyrics in any song :- When I'm shaking a hand I'm clenching a fist - And if they gave me a pound($/€!)for all the moments I've missed.. And I got dancing lessons for all the lips I should have kissed... I'd be millionaire... I'd be a Fred Astaire....! It's worthy of William Shakespeare....!!
I laugh when Brian and Freddie exchange a smile and a nod at the beginning of the song, making sure they start together! In a previous performance, Freddie started singing before Brian comes in and Freddie said "Well it didn't fucking start so well that time!" 😂😂😂
As I say every time. When you first get into Queen you're dazzled by Freddie but over time you fall in love with Brian. He's such a deep and soulful writer!
It is a song written by Mr Sir Brian May. I read in an article that Freddie add some lyrics to this song, but was like he adopted the song and loved it and he just sang it with his heart and soul. He sang the lyrics of the others bandmates like if it were his own songs, with respect, putting on his own twist and soul.
Brian May stands behind most instruments on this song - piano, acoustic guitar, synthesizer & his electric guitar of course. Not to forget backing vocals he provides on choruses
For the out and out heavy rocker in the group Brian could really contrast that with some of the most beautiful empathetic melodic pieces of music ever....why i love him as a musician......that guitar solo at the end as well! They talk about making a guitar cry that note he hit at the end ripped into the soul.
I’ve only heard live performances (never the studio recording), and Fred’s vocals were top-notch every time. I’ve never been in a ‘relationship’ of any kind, but I know how a breakup feels thanks to television, so this song does hit me in both the heart and gut. 💔 Side note: Dr. Brian May has since formed a charity foundation for animal protection named after this song.
Yes ... Freddie and Brian are a perfect musical pair. So, the whole band mesh in a magical way and why they're the only band where all four members are in the Songwriting Hall of Fame. Freddie ignites them, fronts them beautifully. The 1981 Montreal concert really shows off their talents as individuals and as a 4-piece. Thanks for reviewing Queen and your musical observations of their genius. Please extend your series beyond 50.
Pure truth in the feeling of this song without any blemish, without daydreams, without detours, without alter egos, without return, without end. It takes the breath away... even yours.
That was just great Amy. Thank you. Your comments were so on point. In my top 5 of Queen songs. I hang my head and advertise, a soul for sale or rent, it gets me every time. Freddie and Brian together is pure magic and let’s not forget Roger and John, they contribute hugely too.
This song is ever in my top 5 from Queen. I don't know how many times it has made a tear come to my eyes.... Absolutely emotional song that brings memories of life. As you did with " Somebody to love", it deserves a view to the version from "Live in Montreal" ( For me is really outstanding to see how Freddie played piano for Brian and Brian for Freddie in the same song). And for another reason too: I think in some way, "Somebody..." and "Save me" are the same song from two different perspectives and authors. But, at last, both say the same missing, needing, Love. And curiously both are masterpieces.
4 individuals with their own talent that will never be underestimated. Another good song that doesn't get much attention is "It's a Hard Life". I hope you can comment on it. You can always feel Freddie's singing because he gives his heart to every song. Perfection! Thank you for your great reaction❤ Love it!😍
The song is so beautiful and Freddie executes it beautifully! I am so glad that you appreciated the song. They were and are brothers. The song is so expertly composed, written and performed.
You are spot on - it is an incredible piece of music. One of my all time favourite Queen songs. It also had a beautiful video to accompany it. With Brian's great songwriting and Freddie's immaculate delivery, it's one of Queen's best. Great comments Amy. I'm really glad you like this one.
This has been my favorite song since i was 9 ❤ and the video!!! The end when tries to grab the dove and its just out of reach then turns from animation to real is just beautiful.
Beautifully deep reaction, observations and analysis. Such a gorgeous song. I vehemently agree, Dr. Sir Brian is simply tremendous, a true renaissance man in every way. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John's unique gifts with music and the poetry in their lyrics are practically alchemical. The music of Queen and Dr. Sir Brian's solo work continues to fill gaps in my soul I never knew I had.
This song has been my go-to every time I've been in a break-up situation. When I first heard it as a teen I didn't really understand what it was about. It took experiencing the emotions to make it click into place. An absolutely brilliant piece of music.
Such a beautiful song! I love this one especially live as Freddie could really pour emotion into it. ❤❤❤ Edit: Wow I wrote this before I heard you say the same thing. I think Freddie’s ability is one of the reasons after his death John Deacon retired. He couldn’t imagine their songs sung by anyone else. Having a really good cry and then feeling cleansed is the perfect description for this song. Thanks.
I love all sorts of music, but always come back to Queen. I was almost 7 when their Live Aid performance aired here in the UK. Their music has got me through many dark days. Of their singles, this is my favourite. Have you heard 'White Queen (as it began) or 'Take my breath away)' (live versions of both)? I think you'll appreciate the musicality of both.
One of my favorite studio recordings from Queen. Their "Live in Montreal" performance of Save Me from 1981 is my absolute favorite live performance from the band. Was really hoping Vlad would cue up that performance for you, like he did with Somebody to Love. A few months back.
Can we step back for a minute and appreciate that this is a FIRST listen? And that there is nary an "umm" or an "uhh", throughout? How refreshing to hear silence while someone gathers their thoughts. And an interpretation of the composition, words and music, that could have been a script she'd worked on for hours rather than a completely extemporaneous cold reaction. I think Virgin Rock is going to join the Charismatic Voice and the Fairy Voice Mother and others of their calibre on my musical reaction mount Rushmore!
I would love to see a conversation between you and Brian. With two articulate musical geniuses and sensitive natures, it would be wonderful! Thank you so much for the perfect analysis - it brought me to tears. ❤
I get emotional on this sweet-smooth-crying guitar fanfare on 4:24. One of my favorite guitar work on any Queen song... I think this song is in top 3 of my favorite Queen songs, It played so important part in my life, I was doing a cover of it for last 3 months and just can't replicate the feeling and all the details, I just can't publish it until it's properly done with the feeling that this song resonate in me, it makes me become better musician, I dream to share to the world at least with a proper cover of this song or better, perform this song live in front of many people, so many people could see how underrated some Queen songs are, how many hidden diamonds they have
One of my all time favorites. A powerful broken heart song. I’ve always related very personally to the feeling of being naked and alone, and in need of being rescued from my despair and loneliness. So glad you were able to listen to it straight through to completion without UA-cam having a hissy fit and punishing you.
After first listening of Amy I turned to original music video, that I haven’t watched for decades and it is great! Childhood memories! What a masterpiece, both song and video. Одна из любимых песен!
Dear Amy, maybe this is your best reacting video ever so far!! I agree 💯% to your Interpretation. I remember I was 13 years old when I heard this song alone and loud at night in my bed (I was often alone, my parents had a job at night and I have no siblings). I felt alone and I've cried alone in my bed - even when I haven't understand the whole lyrics because I'm a german guy. And now, 41 years later, I know I had felt this song similar to your professional interpretation of today. I am thankfull that you say to me in this way I had a good music taste in my younger age and I still love this song today. THANK YOU, AMY! Greetings from northern germany ♥️🇩🇪
For me it's one of the best if not the best love song in history of rock, Brian is one of the best songwriters of all time, Roger's drums are spectacular, especially those powerful backbeats on choruses with his iconic opening of hi-hat on snare hit. John bass have unique melody not heard in any other part of the song, it's like living it's own life. The bridge solo is enough to bring a grown man to tears, "Each night I cry, I still believe the lie, I love you till I die..." is one of the most beautiful lines I heard in any song Listening to this song creates a ticking warm feeling in my chest and like I'm about to cry any second... I just can't how are they so good. And Freddie... His singing is unique for every song, I can't remember any other song where he sings like here, it's so intimate, it's a little buried in the mix, like a broken soul tries to break through "Saaave me!". And this beautiful compilation of piano (which shows on intro, verse and outro), acoustic guitar (which EXCEPTIONALLY shows itself on choruses and especially the bridge). And Brian's guitar tone.. oh my god, that "waterfall-like" moment on the verse, and it's the only moment where guitar shows on the verse, it transports us to pre-chorus I think, if you can call it like that. But oh my god it sounds like crying of any human ever, Brian understood human emotions on such deep level. I could write a few thousand words about the bridge solo, it's my favorite moment of the song and one of the most emotional moments in any Queen song for me. When Freddie sings "Each night I cry" - listen carefully - the guitar solo continues to sing with that silky, creamy tone, you can hear better on other mixes of that song. But you can hear the guitar choir actually ends only on "...the lie" and I don't think you can hear that on this mix, but guitar steps down to a note that would lead to other chord, not the one that played with acoustic. Acoustic plays C - D - G - C, and guitar leads more like to C - D - G - Em. It's just one note that makes difference for me (if you could hear that note on this mix). And oh my god the "main" solo... strikes from right ear like a LAZER. And so clearly you can hear beautiful sound reflections that creates space in the middle, like it literally stands (the guitar) in front of you and cires, screams at you : "SAVE ME! SAVE ME!". And then Freddie starts to sing, but the guitar continues: "NO! NO, SAVE ME! SOMEBODY HEAR ME!" and then it steps down with to perfectly complete Gm (I think) chord, iv - the arguably the most melancholic chord, all accompanied with beautiful airy Queen choir. And I like how on last Freddie's scream before "I'm naked.." you hear Queen choir this time singing "Sa-ave me-e!", especially can be heard on left ear. Freddie screams "ooh..", and you can hear distinct Freddie's and Brian's voices in the left ear. The piano on the end.. like a person that falls on the bed, tired from pouring all of his soul in this song, and we're left with this this feeling like: I expressed all of my emotions now, and I soon will be ready to move on, no matter if the message of this song is heard or not... I LOVE THIS SONG
I really enjoyed both the song and your reaction. I'm really glad you like and appreciate Brian's songwriting and compositional skills so much. I agree that was the perfect use of synthesizers. Used minimally and to good effect here. Before they ever started using synths, I was alway amazed how Brian produced synth like sounds in some of his guitar parts. Loved Brian's emotional guitar solo on this one. Great explanation on the power of understatement in music for creating a sense of time and space, illustrated here through the simple and gentle drum cymbal strikes at the transition. Great reaction and observations.
@@splitimage137. Hey Split. I'm glad that Brian has been getting his due, particularly these days. It is easy for some of the other musicians in a band to not get much attention, particularly when you have a superstar front man like Freddie. But with Queen the other guys are all outstanding musicians and songwriters, so it is always good to see them get their recognition too.
@@splitimage137. Congratulations! Just remember I predicted it would happen, being the mathematical genius that I am. Although I don't remember predicting that you would gain in wisdom over me. I will have to go back and look at my calculations again. Perhaps that is further evidence that geniuses like me also tend to be absent minded.

13:28 - That "piano bass note like a heartbeat" is actually Brian May's 12-string acoustic guitar entering the song 😉 Absolutely amazing music indeed! 😍
No, it's a line from the poem 'In Memoriam' by Alfred, Lord Tennyson "I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all."
Thank you Thank you Thank you for listening all the way through before offering any analysis!!! Queen's works are nothing short of genius. Keep on digging into them 🙂
Save Me is a great example of Queen's attention to detail - instead of just repeating the same thing each time, each chorus being musically different eg (as you discussed, the lead into the chorus but also) the drums/chords halfway through the chorus - beats 3 and 4 of the bar right after 'Save Me Save Me I can't Face this Life Alone' - (including the refrain of it under the Guitar solo near the end) , eg the sophistication of the backing vocal harmonies at the end of each chorus - before 'I'm naked and I'm far from home' / 'don't let me face my life alone'.... This is something of a trademark of Queen - to put little details like this in to their songs where most would just repeat the same thing over and over - which you may miss until you spot it and then you find yourself spotting it in other songs too.... Sometimes it's chord or harmony differences, or melody, sometimes lyrics, sometimes the Bass & Drums.... Save me is full of trademarks - wonderful Deacy bass, dynamics, wonderful backing vocals/harmonies, musicality of the drums, Brian's lush guitar harmonies in the solos, the tightness of drums bass piano (live too)...
I've always felt Freddie's vocals on the verses of this song are quite delicate and restrained (compared to other Queen songs). It feels like the emphasis is more on the lyrics than the performance, Freddie is really trying to say something rather than perform vocal fireworks. Of course, Freddie lets rip in the chorus and that has more impact because of the restraint in the verses.
It sometimes feels as though Brian and Freddie have melded into one around this time. Brian's own voice had become stronger and, on first listens, to new releases I would sometimes mistake one voice for the other, particularly, as you say, on the more delicate verses. And let's hear it for Brian's piano skills by this period too. There's so much of Freddie's playing style in this song that it's easy to overlook the fact that it's Brian playing. That final flourish at the end feels pure Freddie.
A dive into the Deep Cuts albums would be most welcome. People know the great single releases, but there is so much lesser known album material, that is simply stunning.
Yes! That is true, I tell people there are Many great songs than just all the hits Got my first Queen album in mid 70's And each new album was like an adventure, what kind of song is going To come up next, since they are all somewhat different even though the Basics are rock, and all 4 different influences of song creations.
just to add that Brain always shows amazing restraint in not doing overlong guitar solos baring in mind his ability and the rock tradition of long solos.
Freddie was able to adopt anybody's musical composition and then to fill it up with his own emotions. Freddie was always looking for The Love and a stable, loving relationship, but he wasn't really lucky in finding the right person.
One of those Queen songs where imho the live version is much better than the studio version. Freddie's vocals in the live in Montreal version are just flawless!!
The live Version is good but in no way better than the Studio Version. There are very few songs out there where the live one is better. Maybe you mean more entertaining yet technically it is impossible to be "better" whatever that shall mean.
@@Ezekielepharcelis Better is always also a matter of personal taste and opinion. I like the Montreal version more because of the different instrumentation (more piano in the first half of the song, Brian played the piano instead of the guitar), and IMHO Freddie lays more emotion into the performance, while in the studio version it sounds more... I don't know... sterile, if you know what I mean. For my ears that sounds "better". 🙂
@@mori1bund Okey so you like the live Version more and that's alright. I was just hopping on that "better as". Because that is technically nearly impossibe. For example I'm not so much a Fan of some Live Gigs as they tend to put too much focus on one instrument or the Singer. To me I think that Rogers Drums and the Piano were too prominent. Great for you if that is your taste, yet bad for People that like a more balanced Level for example. Studio certainly got a more balanced and optimized Sound. Freddie on the other hand once said to people disliking the difference between Studio and Live that they shall listen to the Studio Stuff then. And Queen knew quite well that some of the things they did in the studio would be pretty hard to recreate live. And they didn't even try it. Nevertheless Queen live was an Experience and I can understand quite well that many People like it a lot more. For a first time reaction I would still prefer the Studio, the live Version can be done too of course. cu 🙂
@@Ezekielepharcelis Good points! And I agree that a first time reaction should be the studio version, just for the cleaner, balanced sound and the nuances that are often lost or difficult to hear with the live version alone (among other reasons).
Mercury was able to sing it as good as the studio version, but you have to dig depper, and that means concerts which aren't officially released. I suggest listening to any Crazy Tour version (5 shows from December 1979 available on UA-cam) or San Diego 1980 July 5th.

One of my favourite Queen songs. You can feel the sheer weight of pain and despair in the music. So expertly composed and written.
OMG Amy has turned into a huge Queen fan and also a Rock Fan - nice to see :)
Of all the artists you’ve reviewed Freddie seems to have become a real musical friend. Your fondness shows through. ❤
Brian too

fabulous and immaculate switchovers, from piano to guitar and then Freddie jumps on the piano to continue. So tight.
My favourite rendition of Save Me 👍
That version makes me cry every time.

The short guitar solo starting at 4:46 is for me a well done expression of the pain of the hurted soul. That song is one of my favourite one by Queen.

The melody and chord prog. just fits perfectly...that's a good songwriting..
This is probably my favourite Queen song. I've been waiting for this one.
One of my all time favorites. A powerful broken heart song. I’ve always related very personally to the feeling of being naked and alone, and in need of being rescued from my despair and loneliness. So glad you were able to listen to it straight through to completion without UA-cam having a hissy fit and punishing you.
You must look at Save Me live performed Montreal 81 very moving performance
After first listening of Amy I turned to original music video, that I haven’t watched for decades and it is great! Childhood memories! What a masterpiece, both song and video. Одна из любимых песен!
Oh my word. I could go on, but jeez I love your passion and ear, BEST xxx
Dear Amy, maybe this is your best reacting video ever so far!!
I agree 💯% to your Interpretation. I remember
I was 13 years old when I heard this song alone and loud at night in my bed (I was often alone, my parents had a job at night and I have no siblings).
Wonderful video and reaction - really opened the song up to me that I've had in my heart for 40 years.
Fabulous bass line. I have played it many times
Wow she is exceptional
Please, make a reaction to March of the Black Queen 😁✋
BoRhap's Big sister is a MUST.
@@juttapopp1869 she did
We have the same reaction, the inherent NEED to indicate the tact with the hands, it's so clear, clean, neat and beautiful.
The bridge solo is enough to bring a grown man to tears, "Each night I cry, I still believe the lie, I love you till I die..." is one of the most beautiful lines I heard in any song
Listening to this song creates a ticking warm feeling in my chest and like I'm about to cry any second...
I LOVE THIS SONG
too much love will kill you と who wants to live forever もわたしはだいすきです。
I really enjoyed both the song and your reaction. I'm really glad you like and appreciate Brian's songwriting and compositional skills so much. I agree that was the perfect use of synthesizers. Used minimally and to good effect here. Before they ever started using synths, I was alway amazed how Brian produced synth like sounds in some of his guitar parts. Loved Brian's emotional guitar solo on this one. Great explanation on the power of understatement in music for creating a sense of time and space, illustrated here through the simple and gentle drum cymbal strikes at the transition. Great reaction and observations.
Hey, Lee... my comment here was Brian's work was "unsung..." okay... my bad... poor choice of words... you said it so much better than I!
@@LeeKennison Verily. BTW - piggybacking onto a prior conversation of ours... did you notics? I've GAINED on you in age (and wisdom!) this month...
@@splitimage137. Congratulations! Just remember I predicted it would happen, being the mathematical genius that I am. Although I don't remember predicting that you would gain in wisdom over me. What a fabulous session with you, thank you!
13:28 - That "piano bass note like a heartbeat" is actually Brian May's 12-string acoustic guitar entering the song 😉
Absolutely amazing music indeed! 😍
I love Rogers drums in this.
20:53 Amy probably means: One year of love is better than a lifetime alone
I really hope she reacts to that song when they get to A Kind of Magic... :)
No, it's a line from the poem 'In Memoriam' by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
"I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all."
Now I can die happy! Thanks!
lovely reaction Amy to a lovely song
Great analisis...hola from México...🎉..you are a great musician ...rewards!🎉❤❤
Thank you Thank you Thank you for listening all the way through before offering any analysis!!! Queen's works are nothing short of genius. Keep on digging into them 🙂
Some really expressive / supportive / sensitive bass playing in that performance.
The first time I heard this I was reading Lord of the Flies for high school English class. I imagine Ralph singing this.
Save Me is a great example of Queen's attention to detail - instead of just repeating the same thing each time, each chorus being musically different
eg (as you discussed, the lead into the chorus but also) the drums/chords halfway through the chorus - beats 3 and 4 of the bar right after 'Save Me Save Me I can't Face this Life Alone' - (including the refrain of it under the Guitar solo near the end) ,
eg the sophistication of the backing vocal harmonies at the end of each chorus - before 'I'm naked and I'm far from home' / 'don't let me face my life alone'....
Save me is full of trademarks - wonderful Deacy bass, dynamics, wonderful backing vocals/harmonies, musicality of the drums, Brian's lush guitar harmonies in the solos, the tightness of drums bass piano (live too)...
this song makes me think of a dog or cat at the shelter, looking at you and pleading to be adopted
The video for this song is so beautiful and a work of art in itself
This one always makes me cry
+1 for Emotional Intelligence!
A dive into the Deep Cuts albums would be most welcome. People know the great single releases, but there is so much lesser known album material, that is simply stunning.
Yes! That is true, I tell people there are
Many great songs than just all the hits
Got my first Queen album in mid 70's
And each new album was like an adventure, what kind of song is going
To come up next, since they are all somewhat different even though the
Basics are rock, and all 4 different influences of song creations.
just to add that Brain always shows amazing restraint in not doing overlong guitar solos baring in mind his ability and the rock tradition of long solos.
thank you for your reaction, your ears catch the details and what role they could play in some pieces that I didn't catch
Briljant ❤
queen dragon attack live in montreal video is amazing.
Queen, led Zeppelin or the Beatles are the best group of all time
Ok, I would replace Queen with Pink Floyd... but, clearly, this is not the forum to mention this... but, I did, anyway ;)
@@splitimage137. Floyd are just rich kids playing around, queen are too complex for the spoilt brats.love the guitarist though
@@Andrew-m5p4s OH??? Is that SO?? Do you wanna rumble? ;)

Yep, cry it all out :-)
Queen we're not the first to use synthesizer but they did show others HOW to use them
Another great analysis. I was hoping that you would be reacting to Dragon Attack, but it looks like you are moving on to Hot Space next.
Freddie was able to adopt anybody's musical composition and then to fill it up with his own emotions. Freddie was always looking for The Love and a stable, loving relationship, but he wasn't really lucky in finding the right person.
Well, je found Mary... tue Problem lay in his own complicated personality. What we want and what we are able to aren't always the same thing .
Please, analize the march of the black queen !!!!!
Incredible pairing indeed! 💜
23:20, in the live version it’s done on piano instead. Freddie plays his heart out
Queen Brasil❤❤❤
Damn, how I wish for a piano and voice only version of this song
