  • We put two of the most popular bike racks to the test to see how they would work for our Model Y. They should work the same way for other Tesla Models with a hitch (either factory or aftermarket.)

    You've GOT to do an efficiency video (with vs. without rack). Looking forward to it. I'm actively shopping for a rack now for my X and I'm curious how big of a bite the rack will take out of my battery. Thanks, guys; always entertaining and informative.

    I have a 4-bike Thule (pop-up arms, swing out option). When I used it the first time, it was with 3 bikes, and there was about a 25% range hit at 70 mph (I drove for about an hour), which was a big surprise to me (only a few months after getting the Tesla M3).

  • @robbstack

    The Thule rack is definitely the way to go. Thanks for the vid!

    Nice, I went with the Kuat NV 2.0 and its really hard to install against what you showed with this Thule, time to sell. The stock hitch limits options because the brake plug gets in the way of the pin and locking mechanism. If you have model y and stock Hitch I would recommend not getting the Kuat NV 2.0. Thanks for the video I was really disappointed with the hitch on the Model Y until you showed this Thule rack.

    Try turning on tow mode. That should disable the rear sensors.

    Just got the Thule T2 Pro xtr based on your review for our two eBikes--thanks. Test drove a Y last weekend (impressed) and looking to move from our 2017 Volt to full electric this summer. Can't wait.

      Awesome! I've been very happy with my T2 pro. I like the flexibility to use 2 bikes & occasionally 4 if I need to. Very solid rack.

  • @mikeVBF
    @mikeVBF 4 роки тому +3

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned 1UP. Even easier to load tray style and more solid than Thule. You can also add a swing between trays and hitch but it costs. You can do anything between 1 and 4 bikes. I have 2 bike with 2 more bike addition for a possible 4 bike setup on my MX. With all 4 I felt it bounced around a bit more than I liked on rough roads but I doubt there is anything better for 4 bikes. Totally solid with 2. Only down side is there is no way to put skis on it in the winter but with a Y you can use the roof for that.

      It's a great rack, but not for the Y as you can't fold it all the way up, it will rub on the bumper.

    I have the Thule Vertex XT 4-bike tilting rack, and we've used that for the past 5 years. It has worked out great for us hanging 3 bikes on it (and throwing a 4th bike into the back of our SUV). Putting 4 bikes on there would be super tight, especially if you have a bigger frame mountain bike.
    I'm now looking for a new bike rack like the T2 Pro XT since we've changed a couple of the bikes in the past year, and especially since I don't want to 'hang' my wife's Super73. All of the more affordable carriers are less than half the price of the T2 Pro XT, but the Thule rack just looks much beefier to support the heavier Super73 bike, and it's a proven brand & product so I might just "invest" more now and buy that, and probably get an extension later when my kids get bigger bikes.

  • @stevelamper4654

    I have watched full video that you directed me to, but still did not hear you guys talk about BATTERY EFFICIENCY. I think many people are interested in knowing how much efficiency can be lost on a road trip with two mtb's on the back and or on the roof. Maybe I will do a video on this when I get my Y in a week or two.

    Any problems with the weight limit when extending to 4 bikes? Model Y hitch is only rated to 160 pounds. The two-bike rack weights 55 pounds, and the two-bike extension is another 40 or so.

  • @cincibratus
    @cincibratus Рік тому

    Thanks for the awesome video on the bike racks for Tesla Model Y. I was considering Tule as an option for 4 bikes but the rack weight and 4 bikes (30lb each) easily exceeds the weight restrictions on the hitch. Could you please elaborate how you were able to use Tule with 4 bikes on Tesla Y.
    Tesla Manual has this information:
    The hitch receiver is designed to support vertical loads up to 160 lbs (72 kg). When carrying bicycles, skis, or other items on the Model Y hitch, always check to ensure that the maximum weight is not exceeded. When calculating weight, remember to include the weight of the accessory carrier. For example, assuming the carrier weighs 40 lbs (18 kg), the weight threshold is sufficient for carrying two bicycles weighing approximately 60 lbs (27 kg) each, or four items weighing approximately 30 lbs (14 kg) each

    Has anyone had an issue with cruise control shutting down on a Model Y with the EcoHitch (non-stock) mount & a bike rack? Even after removing the rack, I have no cruise control, traffic light detection, no images of other cars; no camera functionality. This has happened twice (fixed itself 2 days after removing the rack the first time). Resetting the computer has no effect. AP activation (double down click on stalk) says “camera alignment required) but that usually takes only 20-30 miles?

    Eric, you thought you got a great deal on your 4 🚲 rack? Not as good a deal as I got one Sunday @ my local 🚗👢 sale (UK equivalent of a yard sale). For £0•50p or approx. $0•75 I picked up a large heavy stainless steel frying pan with the dimples inside & long handle so you can hang on the wall & 3 large glass Pyrex lasagne dishes with handles all working out @
    12 & 1/2p per item. OK, so not car related but STILL an unbelievable deal. The frying pan was virtually brand new, extremely difficult to find in the shops, worth ~ £40 - 60 & had been lurking in the guy's mother's garage because it was too heavy for her. The whole lot was just sitting in a plastic bag at his stall & being sold as a job lot. About £80 worth of kit. And, YES, I'm known for being tight!! 😂

    That Thule rack is a horribly flawed design! I had one and the little hook or "stinger" as Thule calls it can back out and then the whole rack can wiggle and come off. Which happened to me and my bike and rack came off on the freeway. I would recommend Kuat or OneUp as better alternatives ( but anything with a solid locking pin through the hitch). Thule's number one priority on design should have been to keep the rack on your car.
