I found the Opal with Hope Sandoval show this is sourced from through a trader over the net many years ago. When I asked about Opal, he said he had a show from 1988 on VHS stored for over five years, but had never watched it or transferred it to DVD because no one had ever asked! He said it was acquired in Taiwan in an shady back alley known for black market items.
As sweet as it was to actually see Opal live, the music was a little rough. So I set out to improve it as much as possible. I ran it through a Yamaha 10 band equalizer to improve the audio and raise the sound level quite a bit. It's a much better listen now.
Update 2023: Another upgrade of this incredible moment in time was needed!
So I re-ripped the Opal bootleg DVD in HD. Remember, it was recorded in 1988 on VHS tape. The audio, unfortunately, was also recorded by the camera in poor quality, and a good audio source for this Opal show has never surfaced. So I took the original DVD audio that I ran through a passive Yamaha EQ when I first uploaded it years ago, and used some modern audio technology to really improve the sound and listening experience!
Despite Kendra Smith's departure in November of 1987, Rough Trade retained Roback's original record deal, contractually obligating him to supply a follow-up to Opal's debut album, Happy Nightmare Baby. As a result, Roback and Sandoval continued to tour as Opal for the next two years, during which time they completed production on Opal's planned second album, titled Ghost Highway. Composed mainly of songs written by Roback and Smith, Hope stated that she was unhappy with the material, and expressed an interest in wanting to "start something completely new." The pair quickly composed and recorded seven new tracks in Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, and renamed the band Mazzy Star. Written over a year before Mazzy Star's inception, the track "Ghost Highway" is the duo's only original (released) song to not feature a writing credit from Sandoval.
She Hangs Brightly was released in April 1990 on Rough Trade.
Woo hoo! This "Blue Flowers" makes the top of my head sweat. :) In some other universe will get to see, hear, give and take energy from one of their lives shows eventually. Thanks again for sharing.
One of the best Live performance sounds from the band with Hope, (IMO) thanks for sharing, I wish they kept this pace up, almost a different band at this speed, is it me or does everything just Gel incredibly for them at this tempo?
Gracias🌟🎸❤️
Hope looks a little more lively here with the tambourine
