July 2020... yikes I’ve started making silicone moulds and cement garden art stuff but keep seeing your adorable things. Trying to stay focused on cement. Lol. I'd love to see some of your cement sculptures. If you'd like to share some photos, you can put them on the Daily Sculptors page on my site. www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page
Hello! I live in England and DAS clay is easily available and quite inexpensive - it goes a long way! I’ve used it for some time making small model houses and I get on really well with it, finding it very forgiving. I have also combined it on other objects with ordinary paper mache where it can come in useful for extra detail. I love your rabbit and feel really inspired to have a try! Thank you for your video!
Great info, Debra. I have a question for you - how do you keep it from drying out? The foil pouch doesn't seem to seal it completely after it's been opened.
Hello again! Before I store it I spray it lightly with water, keep it in the foil wrapper with the top folded down and put a rubber band tightly around it. I then keep it in a plastic container with a close fitting lid. If I’m using small amounts at a time I break some off and, while I’m working, I put it in a tiny plastic, lidded tub and keep it sprayed, especially if it’s warm weather. I am only just getting acquainted with paper mache and love some of your work. You are very generous with your expertise!
I am hooked on watching your channel . I have been binge watching for the last couple of hours. yes, I am a new sub and even ordered one of the darling wolf mask templates for the base a few mins ago for a gift for my daughter who is in her twenties and just learning about paper mache...she's hooked already. Big fan signing off from Illinois, Suz
Thank you for this tutorial! I’m just now getting started in the world of paper mâché. I’ve bought some Das brand and another air dry clay to add to sculptures. I’m really excited to get started! I also love making rabbits, yours are so sweet! 😀
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Fisher Terrell I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Just a quick note/suggestion..... You can mix in some of the white glue with the DAS product to make me more pliable or if you have problems with a lack "stickiness" with your project. By the way, I love watching your videos, you are an inspiration.
This is just wonderful!! I love this so much!! I’ve downloaded your pattern and can’t wait to try it! I hope you’ll post something new soon. I really enjoyed the instruction.. 🙏🏻 thank you
I know this is an old post but i use Das a lot and quite frankly a fan will dry the clay just as quick and you can add more layers within an hour. Its a lot cheaper to run and less smelly! I do make my own clay for larger projects and then use Das for finer detailing , just another point is home made clay does take at least twice as long to fully harden than Das.Ps i am an American living in England and can get Das for half the price as its easily available over here !
Hello! Your video was very useful for my first experience with sculpting and clay, thanks a lot! I wanted to ask if the second layer has to cover all of the first one, or just parts that we want to change a little. In other words, is one layer of clay enough for a sculpture? Thanks!
You are so amazing, I love your passion for your art. I admire your work. Would that clay make a 14-15 inch bunny? I need to make 10 of them for a garden party. Or what’s the best cheapest clay for that?
You can make your bunnies any size you want, and you only need a thin layer of the clay on the outside. But I'd make up a batch of my smooth air dry clay recipe instead of buying a commercial brand if I had to make that many. You can find the recipe here: ua-cam.com/video/YOiovGN-yHA/v-deo.html
Hi Jonni - love this bunny - want to make one - will post it if successful on your blog. Thanks! Also any chance of adding to this and finishing the bunny body - really cute if it was whole.
If you make a whole rabbit, be sure to share that on my site, too. I do have a pattern for a really small rabbit. I made mine with epoxy clay, but it could be done with air dry clay, too. www.ultimatepapermache.com/rabbit
@@UltimatePaperMache Yes, we are definitely going to make something. I teach an art class with adults and I'm going to make this as a sample piece I think.
I won't have time to make a parrot anytime soon. But you can use the methods I used to make a snowy owl, but just change the shapes and colors. You can find the first one here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/snowy-owl-sculpturepattern The links to the other posts in that series are at the bottom of the page, so scroll down to find them.
DAS is sold at Michael’s and Joanne’s in the U.S. That’s where I’ve always bought mine. Also, I’m not sure why you put in an oven. DAS is air dry clay. Was it just to speed it up? Oh! To keep it soft and not dry out, I roll and fold over the wrapping, then tape it very thoroughly with blue painters tape (since I’m using that for my projects, anyway). Then, I put that inside of a Ziploc bag, squeezing out any air.
Good tips. Thanks. And yes, I just stuck it in the oven at the lowest setting and the fan on, just so I could get the video done quickly. You're right - it doesn't need to be baked.
@@UltimatePaperMache, WOW! I never knew it could be put into the oven! I learned something new, and now I don't have to wait hours or days to continue a project. I am so impatient HAHA! Thank you!
I would use a base of heavy wire that extends from the muzzle all the way up to the tip of the antlers. Each fork of the antlers would need its own wire, and they should all start as low on the sculpture as possible to make sure the antlers are attached really well. Then fill out the forms of the antlers with foil, just like I did when I made the bunny. I haven't made a deer, but I did make a Bongo antelope with long horns. You can see that video here: ua-cam.com/video/WsCSnDbclSw/v-deo.html
We love this bunny! And we think it's fun to make. But me and my 9 year old son are trying to tackle this project but we are having a hard time shaping the bunny's head around the frame. It's not clear in the video. Any advice you can give us ?
I don't think I have anything else I can say about the face. This bunny doesn't need much detailing, so two big cheeks and two smaller bumps below his nose for the muzzle are about all that's needed for shaping. And he's small enough, so if you aren't happy with the first one you can call it your practice bunny, and make another one. 🐰
I have a question that might be a good topic for another video: How do you create your own patterns for projects? I've been wanting to create them for future projects by making a 2D mockup like your rabbit pattern
The flat patterns, like the one I used for the bunny, are pretty easy. It's just a sketch of the outside edges of a rabbit. I like to find two or three good photographs of the animal I'm sculpting. They need to be taken from the side, and that's not always easy to find. Most photographers shoot animals from the front. Then I do a sketch using the photos, and change them up a bit to make the sketch work for my sculpture. The 3-D patterns, like the ones that make the masks on the wall behind me in the video, are a whole lot harder.
i love rabbits i also have a real one :) but i wanted to ask: I cannot find Glazing Liquid so can i put that final paint with water (without the glaze)???
@@UltimatePaperMache ok thanks i already done it coz its been almost a week but dont worry its fine (it worked kinda) i was a little slow and it turned a little dirtier but i like it. ill try to make more sculptures to get better in the future!!

Yes - for years the only thing I used for armatures was crumpled paper and masking tape. It's getting hard for me to get the tape off the roll (old fingers...) so the foil is easier for me to use - but the crumpled paper method will work just as well. In fact, all the sculptures in my book about making animal sculptures are made with the paper and tape. Have fun! 😀
It depends on how big your angel is. I made a small and very simple angel tree-topper, and you can see how that was done here: ua-cam.com/video/70PwcvYujok/v-deo.html For a very much larger set of wings, you could do it the same way I made my dragon wings, but use bird "bones" instead of bat "bones."
