The price of the little Ninja food chopper went up again after I made the video - this is the one I used: amzn.to/2CDCTWJ
Some of the other choppers I looked at are less expensive, but they have fewer blades than the Ninja, so I don't know if they'd work as well. Of course, it's possible that they work better - but I can't buy them all to find out. If you have a different brand, let us know if it works or not.
This recipe should work well for folks who live in areas with lots of critters who are attracted to the flour in the original recipe. Suzan also says that she has some old paper mache clay from last year, still damp in the bowl, and there's no mold.
If you have any ideas for future experiments or projects, let me know in the comments below.

Dear Jonni, I loved doing paper mache when I was a kid. I stumbled upon your site and was immediately captivated by your wonderful creations as well as your very generous sharing of ideas, recipes and methods. Suddenly my old passion for paper mache has been reawakened and I can’t wait to get started on my first project in over forty years! Thank you for the inspiration.
You're welcome. Have fun!
Sad person that I am, I am very critical of much, that finds its way onto UA-cam. I always say, 'if a job us worth doing, its worth doing well'. But we get people who speak in the most unattractive and appallingly unintelligible way, with badly placed mics, background noise, etc. They just love the sound of their own voices, and get to their point halfway through the video! Thankfully, there are indeed some very professional videos. Many are inspirational, and leave you wanting more. This is one of them. Great! Thank you ma'am!!
Beautiful work !💖
In my country ( Venezuela)
People use cornstarch to make the paper mache and it makes the mix smooth also 💖
But is cornstarch also attractive to insects?
Does it mold?
Please, answer to us? Share your recipe with us, please!
I'm from Mexico and my mom uses cornstarch as well for piñata making. It does not mold nor does it attract insects ☺️
@@sjane7229 People add salt to the pastes to avoid mold; it probably works for insects, too. Borax should also repel mold and bugs, but I don't know if it would be hard on your hands with prolonged use.
Those Ninjas are fantastic for making paper pulp! I bought mine about a year ago. I fill it with paper and hot water and let it soak for a while. Then chop everything up to a pulp. Ring the water out using an old t-shirt. Then put the dry pulp back in the ninja for a final chop. You end up with a parmigiana like texture.
I also use calcium carbonate/ground limestone to dry my clay up some. Not a big fan of flour either.
You're way ahead of me, Rachael!
Good ideas
Rachael P have you tried adding Kaolin clay dust and Fibreglass Chop to add strength? I have both and am making exterior sculpture that needs to be totally waterproof .
@@jdmosaics For an exterior sculpture you should look into yacht varnish. This guy did tests with various sealers and found that to be the best: www.papiermache.co.uk/articles/waterproofing-papier-mache/6/
Love it when lovely people make lovely videos that make art so very easy. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and inspiration.
My high school art teacher introduced us to papier-mâché and we used Sta-flo the blue laundry starch bottle. My project from 20 years ago is still going strong! Look at the ingredients says it used corn other may include rice- both doesn’t affect gluten sensitivity; however, wheat is sometimes used as well so idk about the gluten aspect.
Thanks Heather. I've heard of people using the starch with paper strips instead of wheat flour. Your project must have turned out well, if you kept it so long! That's pretty cool.
You have done an amazing job. Thank you for sharing. I've been a grower Gardener for 6 years and love everything about nature and animals! Great video!
Thank you!! I have a question if that is ok. I used to do pottery, but I enjoyed the handwork the most. I covered baloons with very thinstrips of clay, and use a knive to smooth it the clay. It came out very thin and light. I was wondering how the papermashe would work with the glue in there. I used to love making masks. So you can imagine how excited I was to learn this recipe!! Thank you again.
Thanks for the tip! I've been making paper clay without flour, but don't like the consistency. It works, but it can be lumpy and breaks apart too easily. I just got a mini food processor so I hope this helps.
i have not seen your videos in forever, I need to get back to sculpting. Your works have inspired me, flour does NOT attract bugs and mice IF you SEAL your piece with clear spray like I do. It makes me wonder if folks even SEAL the paint?????
I think there are some critters that can detect edible substances no matter how hard you try to hide them. And some creatures just like chewing on stuff - here in MN I've been told that crickets will eat the electrical cords in the garage, but they don't come in the house, (knock on wood). I've never had a problem with bugs myself, but I don't live in the tropics.
I used my stick blender on the toilet paper soaking in the hot water....then followed the rest of your idea.....mine is super smooth :) Love watching your video's
Great idea!
Me too it works beautiful.
THANK YOU for this recipe!!!! I haven't been wanting to do paper mache with flour....we do get mice, and I will share this recipe with my daughter who is allergic to wheat :)
Great - be sure to let us know what you think of it after you've had a chance to give it a try.
I see things at the craft store started to do crafts with thinking.. it be fun to do this.
I let the paper dry completely in small chunks. Then powder them in small batches in a coffee grinder. It's a long process. I like what you did here a lot better. Thanks!
Dear Joanie, You Are So wonderfully Talented! Thank You for sharing your talent with the world
Thanks! 😀
Jonni..thanks this is what I need. I however did not presoak the paper. I seperated the ply and one by one dissolved it in the glue using a silicone spatula. Once dissolved I used the dough hook to mix into a clay. Well it looks perfect..as creamy as yours.
Interesting - I didn't realize you could do that. Thanks for letting us know. 😀

I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your easy going artistic attitude that I’ve missed so much from my prior art teachers! I’d like to make a small to medium Godzilla as a Christmas present. Any tips?! Thx again! Love it love it love it!!!
Godzilla of any size would be a lot of fun to make - and it would be a great present. I start every animal sculpture with a pattern inside to set the outline, and you can do that with a drawing of Godzilla. Draw it on cardboard, cut it out, and fill out the rounded shapes with crumpled foil for a little one, or crumpled paper and masking tape for a giant Godzilla. The cover it with paper mache. This is fabulous , I am going to do this with teachers for training next month . Going to make puppet heads and will definitely use this recipe. Am not sure what the wall compound is called in South Africa but will fined out . Thank you so much.
I've been watching your videos and taking careful notes. I admire and envy your artistic ability. I'm not artistic, more of a carpenter and stage hand for an opera company. I needed paper mache to make six semi-frightening severed heads for the opera "Turandot". I decided on your flour-less clay and the first batch worked beautifully. I started with styrofoam heads from store displays, primed them with acrylic-latex primer for hardening and adherence. I used crumpled tin-foil and double sided tape to add bulk where needed, putty to cover and adjust shapes and textures. This worked beautifully, although the surface was a bit lumpy. That was fine since these heads are supposed to be partly decomposed!
For my second batch, I discovered something serendipitously. After soaking and macerating the toilet-paper with my $12 mixer, I had it draining in a strainer in the kitchen sink. Meanwhile, I was washing the mixing bowl with dishwashing detergent which accidentally went into the strainer and created some suds.
Suddenly the lumpy wet toilet paper became smooth!!!
I rinsed it thoroughly to get rid of the soap and then wringed it out (wrang? wrung?). This time, my wet 28 g of TP was only 88 g. The previous batch was 130g when wrung out. It released more of the water! When I mixed the joint compound and PVA glue, the result is a wonderfully smooth and creamy clay. It goes on smoothly without the lumps that I was getting previously. It's a real pleasure to smooth out. I will be "washing" my paper fibers from now on. I love the creamy texture.
What a great experiment! Thanks for sharing it. Merry Christmas! 😊
I wish you was my Grandma because I love your videos even though I’m a child it’s great to watch art and crafts video with family :)

2/3 C drywall joint compound
2/3 C school glue
2/3 C shredded white junk mail
Works for me.
Thanks, Leigh.
Sounds good. I can’t wait to try it. I work with drywall joint compound often; it never occurred to me to use it in paper mache. I made some Christmas ornaments out of flour based paper mache as a kid living in Southern California. I had them shipped to Hawaii where I live now and they all disintegrated due to the high humidity. They were little irreplaceable treasures and I was very sorry to lose them after they had survived from over fifty years. An amusing related story. My first Christmas on the island I lived in a condo on the ocean. I had a Christmas tree and decided to hang candy canes on it. I thought they would look much better without their cellophane wrappers. I awoke the next morning to discover that the candy canes had all melted into stalactites of sugary goo that had reached the floor! Aloha from the island of Maui.

hello, sorry for the mistakes because I am using google translate for my question.I'am french. I will be sewing using your Paper Mache clay recipe with children in my workshop. I work for a museum and I would like to make a Greek amphora. I will have to make a very large quantity of dough a few days before. My question is to know if it can be preserved without hardening in a seal for example? thank you for your reply.and congratulations for your work you are an artist
You can put your paper mache clay in a plastic bag or seal it in a lidded container. If you use the premixed drywall joint compound, there is no plaster of Paris in the mix so it shouldn't get hard if it's sealed. And there's no flour in this version, so you shouldn't have to worry about mold setting in while the mixture is still wet.
Great recepy, and look at the wall! Awesome. And shes so cute!
I'm glad you put out these videos, I'm going to go out and make something now 😀
Have fun! 😊
Thank you for this video!
I started making fairy houses and the video showed the mixture with flour. I made a beautiful fairy castle but as it dried I started noticing this black looking mess coming out and it was black mold!
I had to destroy all that work I did.
One way to avoid that is to put your work in front of a fan so it dries really fast. Mold can't grow without water. But in some locations, getting paper mache to dry fast is really hard if not impossible. I hope this recipe helps with your next project. Let us know!
Cool and experienced as heaven
Very interesting I would like to try this as I’ve never done it before but I’m curious how do you build the basic form of the animal before you can apply he clay
loved the video, im working on a project and i need to make the mixture more of a wet liquid and spreadable using my hands, what would you recommend?
You can add less paper, or more joint compound and glue. I often make the original recipe (the one with flour) in a thin consistency so I can get a thin layer over an armature, but I always use a knife instead of my hands. It's much easier to get an even layer that way. And less messy. But your method might work, too. :)
Wow, years ago I made a giraffe the exact head size as yours but with a complete body too..,he was amazing. Love your work.
I would love to see that giraffe. Do you still have it?
@@UltimatePaperMache Unfortunately no I do not. I had a roommate years ago who I did not know was doing crack while I was at work and I came home one night and she had let her drug addled friends in the house and they tore him up..I was livid and looked like mommy dearest on crack after that so I threw her out and I had put him in the basement then never took him when I moved. He was so neat..same size as a new born giraffe and I would put him in my picture window with a hanging viney plant then loosely tie a piece of the plant in his mouth with fishing line...I really miss him. I worked on him for 8 1/2 straight hours until I was finished and offered over 500.00 for him.

Your work is amazing!
Thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching and learning from you. Your work is amazing! Tried this recipe but doubled the amounts. It was very wet and sticky. I probably didn’t get enough of the water out of the paper before shredding it. Used it anyway to make 2 fake rocks which are drying now. I had a little bit of clay left from this so I am going to try to add more paper but much drier than the first. Will let you know how the rocks and the clay with the extra, drier paper added to it turn out.
Are you using it as a solid rock-like piece instead of adding a thin layer over an armature? If so, I'd really like to know if they dry all the way through. I'm not sure they will, even with the drier paper, but I haven't tried it.
Ultimate Paper Mache I did use a foil armature like in your videos. I put the clay over this fairly thickly. The rocks are drying (with help of a fan) and becoming like, well, rocks. Think the paper pulp had too much water left in it. Going to make another batch and squeeze more water out than the first batch. I ordered one of your books yesterday so that will help. Thanks again Jonni!

How flammable is the finished sculpture?
I haven't tried to burn one up, so I don't know. It is made out of paper, though, so ...
I have been looking into a new obsession and I want to give this a try!😃 stupid question tho is the drywall compound ok to use indoors right? Like I don’t need extra ventilation just be by a window or something? I predominately work on my art in my kitchen area…thank u
Yes, you can use it inside. It's designed to be used to make interior walls, so people use it inside all the time. The only thing you won't want to do is sand it inside - it makes a very fine dust that goes all over the house, and you need to wear a mask if you sand it.

Plaster of paris works. Getting second hand appliances from the thrift shop instead of buying new, is more green for the planet. Breaking the paper when dry is way easier for your machine, and then the motor doesn't have to work so hard.
I agree...
Can we use llaster of paris in place of dry wall compound?
@@didyouknowb4 The plaster will stiffen up right in the bowl, and you won't have time to sculpt with it.
What about ground taro root instead of flour or corn starch?
I am trying to make this recipe and I am having a problem. I am now making my second batch after watching the video for the 5th time. I am wondering if the joint compound is the problem. It is Wurth brand from Walmart. At no point does it look wet and fluffy like yours does in the video. When my first batch turned out badly, I tried adding more joint compound, then more glue, then mineral oil. At no point was it spreadable. I left it overnight and tried kneading it, but still no luck. Should I try another brand?? What do you suggest?
You can do a fast test to see if the joint compound is the problem. It sounds like what happens when we use DAP brand joint compound, and it's possible that you found another brand that works the same way. Spoon out a small dab of the joint compound, and then add a small dab of the glue. Mix them together. It should still look like the joint compound did, but wetter. If it now looks lumpy or stiff, or if it feels kind of rubbery, I'm afraid you'll need another brand. Please let us know how your experiment turns out.
@@UltimatePaperMache It turned into rubber. Wurth brand must be like DAP. I will try again with a different brand. Thank you for your quick response.
That happened to me with that brand but mine was also stretchy, or wrinkly, and had some air bubbles. I thought maybe I didn't mix it well enough but now that I've seen your comment regarding that brand I think it's the problem. How did yours turn out with a different brand?
@@UltimatePaperMacheI'll have to try this. I commented on the wrong video before so I'm glad I went to the most recent comments on this video without the flour.
I love this ! One question.....once a project is complete, and dry, can you spray with a clear coat polyurethane spray to seal it. I wanted to make a shallow bowl for holding fresh fruit and want to be able to wipe it with a damp cloth if needed.
Yes, you can do that. They might make food-save varnish, although I haven't checked.
Wow! Came across this as a recommendation. You are incredibly talented. Beautiful work!
Thanks!
New to your channel . I love your art work ! I can not wait to try .
Never heard of paper mache before this is interesting to watch
Love your work you make it look so easy
I am a bit curious, because this will be my very first time attempting to make paper Mache clay and I am curious as to why you use joint compound in it and if I can't afford to add the joint compound in it if the paper clay will still turn out alright without it please? Thank you! Looking forward to what you have to say.
The joint compound makes the material smoother than traditional paper mache pulp, and it dries really hard so you can use a thinner layer. But if you'd prefer to leave it out, do a search for paper pulp tutorials. Or watch some of the tutorials on this website: www.papiermache.co.uk/
@@UltimatePaperMache Thank you for explaining that to me. I opted to get a small bucket of joint compound at Home Depot. It's the USG all purpose one and about 1.75 pt. I figure that might be enough for my first 2 batches or so. Again thank you!
Fabulous idea💕💕💕
That was very informative and nicely explained. Thank you for sharing this with us.
You're welcome. :)
Thank you for sharing your experiment. I am curious what your preference is now, original recipe or this new version?
That's a tough question, Mandy. I like how easy it is to mix this version, because it doesn't have that dough-like tendency to ride up the mixer blades. I would use this one for the base coat, for sure. To get a nice smooth surface takes a long time, but it is possible, but I might want to use the air dry clay recipe for a second coat if I wanted it to be smooth. Or just do a skim coat of joint compound, which works, too. It will be really interesting to see what other people think about this recipe after they have a chance to try it out.
You are so talented!
What about shredded paper pulped in a blender, drained, and wallpaper paste? It seemed to work when I tried it.
Kathy B.
This is the way we use it all the time, from back in kindergarten at school
Yes, that's the traditional way to make paper pulp, and many people really like using it. There's a lot of paper mache artists on www.papiermache.co.uk/ who use it for their sculptures, and they have a lot of tutorials.
I do the same, but with some paper towels or copier paper for a bit more strength. Acrylic paint can stand in for glue, mod podge, or joint compound, and adds color, if you like . You can also make your own sheets of paper and add stuff like petals, glitter, seeds, and so on. Just omit most or all of the glue.
Cotton linters, either in sheets or crumbled in bags might be a lot cheaper than TP. They can usually be purchased at bigger art supply stores.
Wow this is incredible I’ve never seen anything like it this is amazing I love it so beautiful I wished I could do this I love all the animals on your wall wow you’re at true artist 💕💕💕💕

Awesome! Thank you!
Love your work. Fabulous maam
You are lovely. Great teacher too.
Thanks.
Very interesting, I muast try this. Paper made for camping/caravan type toilets will break down more easily - there is less of the chemical added to make it stronger, but it is a little more expensive. You can also buy cellulose fibre which is sold as an additive to epoxy/polyester resins to form a putty and is already in the form that you end up with after you have used your electric chopper, but dry. I found that pottery material suppliers stock it. At £7/kilo it is probably cheaper than toilet paper. Hpoe that helps.
The cellulose idea sounds interesting. I once tried cellulose insulation, and it didn't work because they add something that made it get lumpy and rubbery when combined with the glue. But the type used by potters might not have that problem. I'll check it out. Thanks!
Back in the fifties my neighbor and Den Mother in Boy Scouts made her paper mache in an old wringer washing machine. She used news papers and other paper. I don’t know her recipe but she used it for all kinds of projects.

Does this have shrinkage like the cold porcelain air dry clay? Also how long does it take to dry? Thank you for sharing❤
It will shrink - any water-based material will shrink as the water evaporates. I can't say exactly how long it will take to dry, though, because it totally depends on how thickly it's applied, the temperature and humidity in the room, whether or not you have a fan. Go ahead and do some experiments in your environment - that will give you a better idea than me just guessing. 😊
Ninja is a great product
Mam you are very talented 👏
Thanks a lot 😊
Your skills give beautiful results, you are wonderful!
Thanks for the great videos. I was looking at joint compound at local home supply stores, & noticed that some brands have variations such as mold inhibitor, or light weight. 1. Should I have any concern of potential problems with mold with the big buckets of Proform, all purpose, professional, premix that you show in the video? 2. Would you see any need for a light weight formula with some of the large items you have made?
No, I haven't seen mold growing inside a tub of joint compound. Unfortunatly, Walmart doesn't seem to be stocking the Proform brand any more, at least in the larger size. But any premixed joint compound, regular or lite, will work - as long as it isn't DAP.
@@UltimatePaperMache Thanks. Menards & Home Depot both show Proform in stock in my city

These are awesome videos, I love them. My husband and I fish alot and i would love to to make a replica of the fish we catch. Do you have and videos on fish or ocean animals? We are located in the Galveston Texas area.
One of my readers, Basil Hammerton, wrote a wonderful guest post for my blog showing how he made a family of humpback whales. Not a fish, of course, but the result was stunning. He didn't make a video, but you can find the post here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-humpback-whale-sculpture-tutorial
I love to do craft 🤗🤗 thanks dear 🤗
I am absolutely thrilled with your video, so much so that
I must share wíth everyone!
Plz accept my gratitude ip
Gosh - thanks for sharing! That really means a lot to me.

I had no idea! I'll have to try that. Thanks.
Very helpful video, I'm currently making some paper mache clay to make some masks for my students and I'm trying to use regular recycled paper instead (teaching two things at the same time! ♻️). The first thing I noticed is that it will not get that shredded coconut appearance, it looks more like ground beef. It's still a little wet, not soaking wet but you can still feel the moisture, what I don't know is: should I let it dry completely before adding glue and the drywall compound? HELP!!! 🤔
I haven't tried this particular recipe with recycled paper, but it works well with the original recipe that contains flour. I would try using it as it is now, and see if you can get it to work the way you want it to. If not, you can always add some flour to make the mixture thicker. I know this recipe is for making the clay without flour, but if you aren't worried about the gluten, go ahead and try it. Or, if your first test batch is too thin, you can squeeze out more water for your next batch, and try it again. Make small batches, of course, so you don't use up too much material in your experiments. Good luck with it!
When you buy the drywall compound, is it moist and clay-like right out of the container? They compound I've seen is usually a powder to which water must be added - like Plaster of Paris.
We use the kind that's already mixed, and it comes in a plastic tub. The dry form does contain plaster, so it might harden in the bowl without giving you a chance to use it. Although they do make some kinds that take longer to harden, and they might work. I haven't tried it, though, so you'd have to experiment.
@@UltimatePaperMache Thank you!
So far my fave recipe is PVA glue+laundry detergent+ shaving foam+toilet tissue pulp, will look forward to trying out yours though as well though.
I've never heard of that recipe. Did you make it up, or did you find it online?
@@UltimatePaperMache I um "experiment" a lot (make a mess)😉 happened to have some "slime" around and was bulking up some "sloppy paper clay" the results were quite surprising and took detail quite well. (Has to be the right detergent not all work)
Hi Jonni - hope you are fine - question: do you think painting the inside and outside of a dried object made with flour in the paper mache liquid with a product - Drylock Extreme - a waterproofing, thick white paint would help? My thought is that the paint, especially this particular one might lessen the bug attraction and cover the surface and mask it so pests would not be a problem. As I say this paint is thick and if it can be used as a water proofer then perhaps it might fool those nasty pests. Also the flour problem still exists with the strip method of paper mache so if using the no flour clay over such a product the pests can still come running.
I can't test anything myself, because there aren't any bugs here that come in the house and try to eat paper mache. I think it gets too cold in our part of the world. You'd need to try it to see.
Really loving your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your years of knowledge
