Yes, that's the traditional way to make paper pulp, and many people really like using it. There's a lot of paper mache artists on www.papiermache.co.uk/ who use it for their sculptures, and they have a lot of tutorials.
I do the same, but with some paper towels or copier paper for a bit more strength. Acrylic paint can stand in for glue, mod podge, or joint compound, and adds color, if you like . You can also make your own sheets of paper and add stuff like petals, glitter, seeds, and so on. Just omit most or all of the glue.

Jonni..thanks this is what I need. I however did not presoak the paper. I seperated the ply and one by one dissolved it in the glue using a silicone spatula. Once dissolved I used the dough hook to mix into a clay. Well it looks perfect..as creamy as yours.
Sounds good. I can’t wait to try it. I work with drywall joint compound often; it never occurred to me to use it in paper mache. I made some Christmas ornaments out of flour based paper mache as a kid living in Southern California. I had them shipped to Hawaii where I live now and they all disintegrated due to the high humidity. They were little irreplaceable treasures and I was very sorry to lose them after they had survived from over fifty years. An amusing related story. My first Christmas on the island I lived in a condo on the ocean. I had a Christmas tree and decided to hang candy canes on it. I thought they would look much better without their cellophane wrappers. I awoke the next morning to discover that the candy canes had all melted into stalactites of sugary goo that had reached the floor! Aloha from the island of Maui.

I've been watching your videos and taking careful notes. I admire and envy your artistic ability. I'm not artistic, more of a carpenter and stage hand for an opera company. I needed paper mache to make six semi-frightening severed heads for the opera "Turandot". I decided on your flour-less clay and the first batch worked beautifully. I started with styrofoam heads from store displays, primed them with acrylic-latex primer for hardening and adherence. I used crumpled tin-foil and double sided tape to add bulk where needed, putty to cover and adjust shapes and textures. This worked beautifully, although the surface was a bit lumpy. That was fine since these heads are supposed to be partly decomposed! For my second batch, I discovered something serendipitously. After soaking and macerating the toilet-paper with my $12 mixer, I had it draining in a strainer in the kitchen sink. Meanwhile, I was washing the mixing bowl with dishwashing detergent which accidentally went into the strainer and created some suds. Suddenly the lumpy wet toilet paper became smooth!!! I rinsed it thoroughly to get rid of the soap and then wringed it out (wrang? wrung?). This time, my wet 28 g of TP was only 88 g. The previous batch was 130g when wrung out. It released more of the water! When I mixed the joint compound and PVA glue, the result is a wonderfully smooth and creamy clay. It goes on smoothly without the lumps that I was getting previously. It's a real pleasure to smooth out. I will be "washing" my paper fibers from now on. I love the creamy texture.
Thank you for creating Art, this is beautiful. Can't believe some people still hang on their walls the sad heads of beheaded animals. Pieces of cadavers as decor in 2019 doesn't make sense. Keep inspiring!!!
Plaster of paris works. Getting second hand appliances from the thrift shop instead of buying new, is more green for the planet. Breaking the paper when dry is way easier for your machine, and then the motor doesn't have to work so hard.

@@DAVADMDAVAD Yes, I "sincerely" said what I said and meant it, and no it does not burn my hands but it does something probably as bad as getting my hands burned. Unfortunately (and believe it or not) some people have an extreme intolerance to gluten or a sensitivity to gluten, and some suffer from a very serious disease called Celiac Disease. In my case I just have an intolerance to gluten and cannot become in contact with it or ingested, if I do I get very stiff joints and horrible pain that doesn't go away with medication. I used to own a bakery and one summer I became violently ill and the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with me. After many tests and many specialists I was diagnose with fibromyalgia and had to close the business because I was overwhelmed with pain. Five years later I met a Doctor who recommended an elimination diet and that was when I found that I had a bad reaction to products that contained gluten. After 2 weeks of avoiding gluten I recovered my health and the joint swelling and pain of 5 years "magically" disappeared. Since then I have not needed any cortizone shots for my joints and the symptoms are gone, only to return if I am exposed to or eat "Gluten". So you see, finding this recipe was a nice surprised! ***There has been much research published by reputable medical journals about "Gluten intolerance"

You can add less paper, or more joint compound and glue. I often make the original recipe (the one with flour) in a thin consistency so I can get a thin layer over an armature, but I always use a knife instead of my hands. It's much easier to get an even layer that way. And less messy. But your method might work, too. :)
These are awesome videos, I love them. My husband and I fish alot and i would love to to make a replica of the fish we catch. Do you have and videos on fish or ocean animals? We are located in the Galveston Texas area.
One of my readers, Basil Hammerton, wrote a wonderful guest post for my blog showing how he made a family of humpback whales. Not a fish, of course, but the result was stunning. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy watching and learning from you. Your work is amazing! Tried this recipe but doubled the amounts. It was very wet and sticky. I probably didn’t get enough of the water out of the paper before shredding it. Used it anyway to make 2 fake rocks which are drying now. I had a little bit of clay left from this so I am going to try to add more paper but much drier than the first. Will let you know how the rocks and the clay with the extra, drier paper added to it turn out.
Are you using it as a solid rock-like piece instead of adding a thin layer over an armature? If so, I'd really like to know if they dry all the way through. I'm not sure they will, even with the drier paper, but I haven't tried it.
Ultimate Paper Mache I did use a foil armature like in your videos. I put the clay over this fairly thickly. The rocks are drying (with help of a fan) and becoming like, well, rocks. Think the paper pulp had too much water left in it. Going to make another batch and squeeze more water out than the first batch. I ordered one of your books yesterday so that will help. Thanks again Jonni!
Thanks! I just now got him painted, and I'm working on the instructions now. He really turned out nice. I'll have the pattern available sometime next week.

hello, sorry for the mistakes because I am using google translate for my question.I'am french. I will be sewing using your Paper Mache clay recipe with children in my workshop. I work for a museum and I would like to make a Greek amphora. I will have to make a very large quantity of dough a few days before. My question is to know if it can be preserved without hardening in a seal for example? thank you for your reply.and congratulations for your work you are an artist
You can put your paper mache clay in a plastic bag or seal it in a lidded container. If you use the premixed drywall joint compound, there is no plaster of Paris in the mix so it shouldn't get hard if it's sealed. And there's no flour in this version, so you shouldn't have to worry about mold setting in while the mixture is still wet.
Thank you for this video! I started making fairy houses and the video showed the mixture with flour. I made a beautiful fairy castle but as it dried I started noticing this black looking mess coming out and it was black mold! I had to destroy all that work I did.
One way to avoid that is to put your work in front of a fan so it dries really fast. Mold can't grow without water. But in some locations, getting paper mache to dry fast is really hard if not impossible. I hope this recipe helps with your next project. Let us know!
Yes, if you can soak it long enough to soften the fibers. Many people use newspaper and recycled copy paper. But you do need to soak it much longer than toilet paper, or the PM clay will be lumpy.
Bought a cheap chopper and I’m going to test this out this summer and try to finish my deer head I started ages ago. Head more like that of a reindeer or caribou
If you use the DAP plaster, can it be used for sculpting? The reason i ask, is when I make things to give as presents, they usually will get chiped or broken. Kids are hard on art lol. I'd just like to find something I could use as a kid friendly medium.
I don't know of any artist's material that can't be broken if someone tries hard enough. Wood, maybe? The paper mache clay dries really hard, (but you can't use DAP drywall joint compound in this mixture). I wouldn't want to give a very small child something made with it, if they still chew on their toys, because the paper mache clay and the acrylic paint are not edible. And it will chip or crack if the item is dropped or thrown around.
@@UltimatePaperMache oh I never thought about that, grandchildren and my dogs, DAP is way to dangerous an ingredient to use even as an experiment. Thank you for helping me.
@@UltimatePaperMache I've got to tell you how much your videos have helped me with this clay recipe. I watched a bunch of how to make paper mache clay videos. Your recipe and how to step by step teaching gave me the mental strength to try it myself. I.say that, because I have several health issues that prevent me from doing most anything normally. So standing and moving from one spot to the next is a bit of a challenge I had a question about the DAP. I left the question with several clay artists. Thank you so much because you were the only artist who took the time to answer it. I thought OMG I won't be alone starting a new project, with a completely new medium from scratch. I even thought this will be easier that cold porcelain clay, I did all that cooking on simmer. 45 minutes standing so I could to stir it so that that clay would be super smooth. I've got an OCD problem about every project I start. We have got to laugh about it. The paper mache wore me out, because I was listening to an audiobook and reading out your recipe I had wrote down. I put in 1 full cup of glue, by using the wrong measuring cup. LOL, I did have to make up more of the coconut shredded tissue paper. For me it made a big mess... I had it all over me...wouldnt you know it, my son comes in to take a picture of me. I said please don't do that to me. He's devilish about somethings, so with a wicked little smile he sent it to his new girlfriend. A friend told me once I looked like Lucille Ball when I had a project going and something messed up. I guess His girlfriend should know what kind of mother she'll be dealing with. Oh I'm rambling on, sorry about that. The clay is perfect, I love it. Now because I threw the mixed clay into a air.tight bag then into an airtight container. I took 2 days to recover haha I've knead the clay, and can see it's really pliable. Thank you again, I will have many great days working with this clay. To anyone who thinks I'd like to do this, follow the Ultimate Paper Mache method, you won't be sorry.

I love this ! One question.....once a project is complete, and dry, can you spray with a clear coat polyurethane spray to seal it. I wanted to make a shallow bowl for holding fresh fruit and want to be able to wipe it with a damp cloth if needed.
That's a tough question, Mandy. I like how easy it is to mix this version, because it doesn't have that dough-like tendency to ride up the mixer blades. I would use this one for the base coat, for sure. To get a nice smooth surface takes a long time, but it is possible, but I might want to use the air dry clay recipe for a second coat if I wanted it to be smooth. Or just do a skim coat of joint compound, which works, too. It will be really interesting to see what other people think about this recipe after they have a chance to try it out.
Thanks for the great videos. I was looking at joint compound at local home supply stores, & noticed that some brands have variations such as mold inhibitor, or light weight. 1. Should I have any concern of potential problems with mold with the big buckets of Proform, all purpose, professional, premix that you show in the video? 2. Would you see any need for a light weight formula with some of the large items you have made?
No, I haven't seen mold growing inside a tub of joint compound. Unfortunatly, Walmart doesn't seem to be stocking the Proform brand any more, at least in the larger size. But any premixed joint compound, regular or lite, will work - as long as it isn't DAP.
i just love ur amatures ...i am trying thr dragon for my gamdson im hoping it turns out nice im ready to put on the papermache clay now one question....can it go outside ..just incase he foergets it in the play yard??
The paper mache clay is definitely not waterproof. You could use an exterior varnish on it to protect it for a short time, but it really needs to stay inside. If you need something that can stand up to weather, or be left in the rain or even dropped in a puddle, you might want to consider using Apoxie Sculpt instead of paper mache clay.
I do a lot of paper clay work and I got a lot of silver fish they love flour , glue and paper . I got rid of them but still see the odd one or two now and again. Thanks for this as I ran out of flour xxxxx

i used to make flower paper mache with my grandma and you remind me of her.
What about shredded paper pulped in a blender, drained, and wallpaper paste? It seemed to work when I tried it.
Kathy B.
This is the way we use it all the time, from back in kindergarten at school
Yes, that's the traditional way to make paper pulp, and many people really like using it. There's a lot of paper mache artists on www.papiermache.co.uk/ who use it for their sculptures, and they have a lot of tutorials.
I do the same, but with some paper towels or copier paper for a bit more strength. Acrylic paint can stand in for glue, mod podge, or joint compound, and adds color, if you like . You can also make your own sheets of paper and add stuff like petals, glitter, seeds, and so on. Just omit most or all of the glue.
Cotton linters, either in sheets or crumbled in bags might be a lot cheaper than TP. They can usually be purchased at bigger art supply stores.
You are so adorable. I love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing. Wish I found this alot sooner, but it’s never too late to learn 😁

Jonni..thanks this is what I need. I however did not presoak the paper. I seperated the ply and one by one dissolved it in the glue using a silicone spatula. Once dissolved I used the dough hook to mix into a clay. Well it looks perfect..as creamy as yours.

Thanks honey pie! You're so sweet. Now my suggestion:
2/3 C drywall joint compound
2/3 C school glue
2/3 C shredded white junk mail
Works for me.
Thanks, Leigh.
Life's little lessons! ha... gave me a laugh today! Thanks @@CitizenOfTheWorld2025

What a great experiment! Thanks for sharing it. Merry Christmas! 😊
Thank you for creating Art, this is beautiful. Can't believe some people still hang on their walls the sad heads of beheaded animals. Pieces of cadavers as decor in 2019 doesn't make sense.

I'm glad you like it. Let me know what you think of the recipe after you get a chance to try it.
Did you sincerely and actually say "gluten free paper mache recipe?" and mean it? Willl the gluten strings burn your hands or something?

Your skills give beautiful results, you are wonderful!
loved the video, im working on a project and i need to make the mixture more of a wet liquid and spreadable using my hands, what would you recommend?
You can add less paper, or more joint compound and glue. I often make the original recipe (the one with flour) in a thin consistency so I can get a thin layer over an armature, but I always use a knife instead of my hands. It's much easier to get an even layer that way. And less messy. But your method might work, too. :)
OMG! That's the best recipe for my project.

Thanks again Jonni!

hello, sorry for the mistakes because I am using google translate for my question.I'am french.
Thank you for your video. Can I use old book pages instead of toilet paper ?
Yes, if you can soak it long enough to soften the fibers. Many people use newspaper and recycled copy paper. But you do need to soak it much longer than toilet paper, or the PM clay will be lumpy.
Bought a cheap chopper and I’m going to test this out this summer and try to finish my deer head I started ages ago. Head more like that of a reindeer or caribou
You are lovely. Great teacher too.
Thanks.

Yes, you can do that. They might make food-save varnish, although I haven't checked.
Thank you for sharing your experiment. I am curious what your preference is now, original recipe or this new version?
That's a tough question, Mandy. I like how easy it is to mix this version, because it doesn't have that dough-like tendency to ride up the mixer blades. I would use this one for the base coat, for sure. To get a nice smooth surface takes a long time, but it is possible, but I might want to use the air dry clay recipe for a second coat if I wanted it to be smooth. Or just do a skim coat of joint compound, which works, too. It will be really interesting to see what other people think about this recipe after they have a chance to try it out.
I liked all the ideas. Great work!
@@UltimatePaperMache Thanks. Menards & Home Depot both show Proform in stock in my city
i just love ur amatures ...i am trying thr dragon for my gamdson
im hoping it turns out nice im ready to put on the papermache clay
now one question....can it go outside ..just incase he foergets it in the play yard??
The paper mache clay is definitely not waterproof. You could use an exterior varnish on it to protect it for a short time, but it really needs to stay inside. If you need something that can stand up to weather, or be left in the rain or even dropped in a puddle, you might want to consider using Apoxie Sculpt instead of paper mache clay.
You could get the mixer and blender at goodwill or a yard sale. Thanks. So cool.
Thanks a lot, this is my new discovery
