I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. why is everyone talking about the shawn mendes videos being old when most of justin’s are also old the most recent one here is 2016 for justin-

Not really a fair battle. Shawn’s clips are from his UA-cam channel when he is very young and not so polished as he is now. Justin’s clips are from his concert performances. To be completely fair, clips of Justin’s UA-cam videos of when he first started out should have been used. TBH, both are amazing singers🎤🎸🎼

That's the main difference between them. Justin Bieber is just a good pop singer, Shawn is a complete music artist. As far as singing goes, they have totally different singing styles, so it's unfair to compare them. Both are good vocalists though.

Shawn Mendes has improved so much techmique and tone wise. It's a shame that only old videos of Shawn were chosen. This doesn't represent Shawn's quality at all. Imo, he has surpassed Bieber.

Justin still would have won because he was so good when he was younger . He can controle his voice so good especially in live videos. Then his voice changed and he's great but sound more flawless with his little boy voice. My opinion.

I expected a fair battle somethin like Pink & Kelly based on how well Shawn does sing now. The comparison is definitely off in these clips and skewed toward Bieber, hence the “Whose Shawn Mendes” intro.
I still think Shawn was better💯 Even with these older clips... Shawn may not have the greatest technique, but he's waaaaay better as a vocalist and I like Justin...

Justin is definitely the better vocalist out of the two, but Shawn is really lovely as well. Even though Justin is super famous, I feel that no one ever takes the time to understand how good he actually is.

I could not say that someone is better than another, they are both so different. Shawn is very good, but Justin is too, I think Justin is vocally more versatile, he makes music in several genres. Instead shawn always remains in the same genre. Both are good. but I stay with Bieber.
Im not a fan of Bieber, but I know that he is a better vocalist. He doesnt do his voice justice with the songs he puts out.
Justin's voice is better for pop music, because he can do some incredibly beautiful stuff with his voice. Shawn, on the other hand, has a much more powerful voice which suits better for rock music than pop.

Exactly. If she were to compare the most recent stuff from both, it would clearly be Shawn who is better. Honestly, I feel like she is just a bit biased towards Justin's voice in general. I'm no vocal coach, but some of these clips, Shawn just sound better and Justin would do the bare minimum, yet she'd give it to Justin.

Also, I'm no vocal coach, but that sexy ass raspiness in Shawn's voice (which he has learned to control more and make it sound more purposeful) is seriously STUNNING. In his earlier music, the raspy sound in his voice sometimes sounded "unintentional" or like he was pushing his voice too far, but honestly that is just a part of his sound. He controls it much better now, which is why you should have used more current music from him.
thank you for mentioning the environments these were recorded in . One is in a room with the acoustics of a high school gym has he sits, and the other has a mic plugged into a rack of effects. Maybe I'm jaded after a lifetime of recording and engineering live, but to me i think they should have sent you more comparable clips. Sorry not hating here, I don't have a horse in this race.
Clip 1. You’re wrong. Bieber has more dynamic due to compressors active on his mic, he also had reverb and post production e.g. melodyne or similar can be clearly heard. Shawn was raw.
Clip 2 You’re wrong. Bieber had the same post production. Shawn was raw again
Clip 3 You’re right. Except it wasn’t double stacked. You can hear the original vocal before production playing back through the monitors as well as the post production and ‘auto tuned’ version.
Clip 4 he says summer taaahm because he’s Canadian and it sounds better and less ‘theatrical’. Summertime is closed vowel. Summer taaahm is open voweled

Shawn has improved a LOT over the past few years and is by FAR better than Bieber vocally.
