  • Welcome back to Bullnose Garage! Today, we’re taking a deep dive into one of the most legendary engines Ford ever built: the Ford 460 Big Block V8. If you’re into big power, low-end torque, and engines that can handle anything from towing to drag racing, this is the engine for you. Whether you’re restoring a classic Ford truck, swapping engines in your hot rod, or just curious about the Ford 460’s history, this video has it all. I’ll be breaking down specs, performance potential, and even some of the best modifications to keep your 460 running strong. We’ll also talk about common swaps, transmission pairings, and why this engine still has a cult following today.
The Ford 460 has been powering F-Series trucks, Lincoln Continentals, and even motorhomes since 1968. Even though it retired in 1997, the 460 engine remains a top choice for builders today, thanks to its durability and aftermarket support. If you want to know how to unlock the full potential of your 460 or understand why it's still such a beloved engine among enthusiasts, stick around.
We’ll also cover tips for spotting a 429 vs. 460, how to differentiate between a 370 block, and why the 460’s long stroke makes it a monster for towing and off-road use. This beast doesn’t just rev high-it’s all about torque at low RPMs, making it the perfect powerhouse for hauling, racing, or just building a one-of-a-kind classic.

78 or 79 they changed the pan rail from scalloped out on the Lincoln blocks to a stronger straighter surface. The Cylinder Bores came down a little further into the crankcase as well making the Truck blocks a little more desirable for strokes over 4.150. Stroker builds up to 557” can be had easily with little to no grinding required. Add a set of Motorsport CJ, Trick Flow or John Kasse heads and you will have a serious beast.
The current engine in our 1970 F250 started life as a low compression 79 truck motor. We used a cast steel Eagle 4.300 crank with BBC 6.700” rods and Custom flat tops for 9.6:1 with the Edelbrock non CJ heads. We topped the engine off with a Weiand Stelth dual plane which is a very very underrated manifold with a huge plenum and a large bore 4150 carb. With a Comp 270S cam and their solid lifters with surface oiling. This engine idles down to a mild lope at 750-800 and has a split personality. Bottom end torque hits like a sledge hammer and the power extends out to around 5500 before flattening out.
What I learned from my build so that you don’t have to research on your own is 1) Choose a cam a step longer duration than you normally would.
    2) A quality head rebuild with new Valves and hardened seats done by a good shop can cost more than a set of Aluminum heads. Had I known them what I know now I would have opted for the TrickFlow 320s over the Edelbrock Performer RPMs but this particular engine was built to tow, not race.
    3) Exhaust is super important, a good set of long tube headers and 2.5 - 3.0” minimum H pipe setup is the key to breathing. Over the stock exhaust manifolds, the gains feel like you added 4 more cylinders everywhere.

I have one of the last in an F350, 1997 crew cab. I worked on this truck a lot and put a wide band O2 sensor to monitor fuel/air. If you mess with the emissions or the computer is going out they will either run crazy rich or lean. If it goes lean, they get really hot. After I replaced computer and got the EGR sorted out, it run would run 14.7/14.8 except under load and it would richen up, then lean back out. There is just so much volume of air passing through it at all times that if the afr gets off, it makes a big difference. Speed density system works. I got 16/17 on interstate, 12 pulling.

You might as well have 460 power same mpgs .the gas I have bought was less expensive than payments and insurance on my 22 f150.

@@pauljahelka3060 I would put as much aluminum on it as possible. An FE built at 4.13x 4.125 will be able to scare any one to death though. Put aluminum Trick Flow and a 2x4 Tunnel Port intake an aluminum water pump and it is 510 lbs and makes 600 ft lbs and 700 hp with ease. A 460 is 700 lbs unless you put Kasse heads and intake. I would do an FE. Really. Also I don’t know if a T10 would hold the torque that either one would make. The 390 3x2 401 hp was breaking them even with polyglass tires. Good luck 👍 I love Cobra’s, I always wanted to build one.

I own a 1997 F250 with the 460 engine. I've owned this truck since new and always kept it in my garage. It has about 67K miles on it and I get tons of compliments and offers to sell the truck. A few years ago I considered buying a new Ford truck, but now I would not consider such purchase. New truck prices are way to expensive. My truck does exactly what a truck should do without all the tech of a new one. I love this truck and it will out live me. Just buy the gas and keep the maintenance up, laugh at all the new trucks and their cost to own. Ford use to build great trucks.

Remember that the large disparity between HP numbers before the early 70's vs later is largely due to measuring 'gross' vs 'net' HP. Sometimes the exact same engine was used when the measuring change happened so those aren't different except in numbers, but soon enough pollution laws would bring on a real drop in HP. In stock configurations there wasn't a lot of difference between the 429 and 460 in HP or peak torque, but the 460 had a wider RPM spread of high torque making it feel stronger and pull loads better. There were no real vices or weaknesses with either engine stock, which in itself is unusual. A similar engine ID problem happens with the 360 and 390 engines; measure the stroke to know because most trucks had a 360, relatively few had a 390.

The FE was designed for nascar. The intake is part of the cylinder head. They shaved about 1/4 of the head off so they could fit more aluminum intake. The rules at the time were cylinder heads had to be cast.
FEs get a bad rep because people don't know how to properly seal the intake. It can be a pain, people shim and even go as far as sanding material away to get it to flush up

The 332 in 1958 was not "designed for NASCAR".
"NASCAR racing was the primary development and test bed for Ford’s FE race program throughout the 1960s. The 427 was upgraded and altered every year as needed to remain competitive."

    • @Bbba724
      @Bbba724 23 дні тому +1

@@johnpeters9793 Actually the 332 in the 58 Fairlane did pretty well compared to the Y block. They took away the Paxton supercharger, so they were definitely designing a 58 engine for NASCAR so an intake swap took the pedestrian engine into a race engine that revved like crazy. The 352 in 59 and 60 were making over an hp per ci at 360 and were tuned to 375. So they were hot to trot once they all winked at the AMA ban. The 390 and 406 was a good shot across the bow at 375 and 401. Then the 406,at 385 and 405 was pretty good for the 61-63season with the fastback roof. Then the 631/2 427 with the slick body, 64 with the HighRiser 2x4 … the FE was always built for racing from the 332 PI all the way up… just an intake swap and you were eating everything.

Have one in my '76 Sleekcraft Kauai jet boat. Been in alot of boats where weight significantly effected performance.
Not with a 528ci 460, doesn't matter if she's empty or loaded to the gills. That 460 just laughs and throws you back in your seat. Not sure if thats from torque or the secondaries opening up and trying to suck you through the carburetor.😂
Throwing a 250ft rooster tail out the back of the jet going up the river though is a smile maker for sure.
Naturally aspirated 460 pushing 462hp and 630ftlbs at 3000. Had to reinforce the alternator brackets to keep the torque from throwing the belt.
Would love a pro charger on it but dont have any room for any kind of forced induction.☹
Boat is somewhat rare especially ones that have the factory full engine cover as these hoods was typically the first thing to go with gearheads shoehorning more hp in them.
No room in front, no room on top so the hood usually got shit canned.
Cant bring myself to toss the hood anymore as it increases the rarity of this boat so much.
She still turns alot of heads today even being 49 years old.
Two toned white and black with red and silver flake in the black to match the red an silver pinstripe. Interior is white although very hard to keep clean sure beats a scalding a$$ when you wanna sit down on a hot August day.

I have an 89 F 250 I bought 2years ago for short trip hauling for my construction company. I put a Banks intake and exhaust kit on it, really woke it up. Then a BBK throttle body and TSF injectors. Starts and runs much better with a slight power gain. Advancing the timing to 14 degrees made a very noticeabl difference too.
This truck has a slide in dump bed and I pull a 15k dump trailer occasionally. Its been great.
I'm planning on rebuilding it in a year or two and would appreciate any comments. To keep it emission compliant I have to stick with the stock efi set up, which means stock heads. I know there are shops out there that can port the stock heads. I can also put a mild towing hauling cam in it and increase compression.
As far as I know that's all I can do with stock efi. If it can be stroked or anything else, I would appreciate comments.

@@jaynecobb6711 it was dual purpose. Hook up/haul the race car t the track, once there unhook and dad would race the truck and I the car. Most people don't know this but the newer the vehicles (generally) the heavier they are. That old bullnose was right at 3900 with the 460 in it, which ain't much heavier than one of the bigger cars.

From personal experience, yes even in stock form, it is a powerhouse and torque monster, but the downfall of them is they are very thirsty. Not a very good choice for a daily driver. At the best you get between 7 and 8 miles to the gallon, and that's driving it easy. I had one in a 73 LTD and me and the gas station attendants we're on first name basis.

HELP?? I just did a valve job on a 78 F350 460. It is running now and a friend looked at it and said I put the head gaskets in upside down. There are gasket tabs visible under exhaust manifolds. I saw a you tube and sure enough their install of gaskets show tabs on intake side. The question is do I have to take them back off?? It runs fine.

i have a 96 F350 Dually Super Crew with a brand new rebuilt 460. it's bored .030 over. i have a 3 core all aluminum radiator in it and the engine only has 50 miles on it. it runs too hot. i dont know why. i changed the fan from a clutch fan to a dual electric and it still doesnt stop it from running too hot. i do wish i could figure it out. i love that truck and would like to drive it again. another thing, i have the original engine on the engine stand in the shop with 265,000 miles on it. it started to run warm and i assumed it was worn out so i built a new engine and put it in the truck just for it to run even warmer. i've measured the temp at 240F at the water outlet. if anyone has any ideas, im all ears. also. i pulled the heads to see if i installed one of the head gaskets backward... i didnt. they are both correct. in fact, you can literally see the word "front" on the gaskets at the front of the heads.

Install a wideband, if your running lean you are running hot and cooking valves, Ditch the electric fans unless you have a legitimate 6500cfm you won't stand a chance, run a fixed blade fan, use a flowkooler water pump, use 4 core radiator, tighten up the shroud, and a 180 thermostat.

The ford boat anchor 210 hp at 8 mpg how can an engine burn so much gas and no power

    • @jaynecobb6711
      @jaynecobb6711 23 дні тому

It isn't HP that is the factor in the internal combustion engine.
It is TORQUE, which translates to pulling power.
That 210 HP goes along with 400ish ft pounds of Torque at 2500 rpm.
Which means you can pull tree stumps with that motor.
HP numbers are only affective at 6000 RPM or more while Torque numbers are developed at less than 4-5000 rpm.
And those torque numbers are what gets your average family car or heavy vehicle moving from a standing start.
Torque is what moves those heavy cars from a standing start, moves them fast and smoothly.
The more Torque, the better your average car or truck moves.
That is why electric cars like Tesla are so fun to drive.
Electric motors produce boat loads of Torque at very low motor rpm's.
Torque is developed the second the motor starts to rotate.
In Torque numbers and street driveability a Electric motor beats a combustion motor by a country mile.
