    Great transactions. This was the best way out of the offer sheets. Good job bowman. Tyler, to all the haters saying you are flip flopping, we are allowed to change our opinions over time as situations change.

    I can appreciate everyone trying to make the best of the situation and talking about how it would be risky to pay so much to Phil broberg. But he was a revelation in the playoffs and everyone was calling him a stud and some were saying he was the best defenseman in some games during the final series. He was offensive and defensive and he's ready to bust out after ripening for too long in the AHL. It wasn't " just 10 games" in the playoffs, he walked straight into a pressure cooker and got the job done with aplomb.

    Their mistake was the Perry deal, simple as that

    • @gordparchewsky4323
      @gordparchewsky4323 2 місяці тому +4

      The Perry deal, mistake or not, had nothing to do with this decision on either player. This was 2 young, mostly unproven RFAs that got offer sheets at a combined 6.9 million. It was their right o sign those deals, but signing those deals are why they are gone, simple as that. How they were treated and developed, play time with the NHL club, etc. definitely are reasons too. The Oilers, like most teams were using their RFA status, their lack of arbitration and bargaining power, to grind them down to 2-2.5 million combined. The Blues and their offer sheets, spoiled the Oilers plans.
      Edmonton is in WIN NOW mode, this year, and even next year are their best chances to win, before Drai(1year left), McDavid (2 years left), and Bouchard (is 1 year left), all go up in salary. The Oilers got out of cap hell, gave themselves flexibility to make moves (like an upgrade at 2nd paring RH D). IF they kept Broberg,and Holloway for that matter too (just to a lesser extent) they were basically done. Between the inability to trade either Broberg or Holloway for a full year, Kane's unknown health/LTIR status, being over the cap, and our lack of assets to move (picks and prospects), the Oilers would of been stuck with this team, for better or worse. Could Broberg and/or Holloway actually of worked out this year? yes, but, odds are, they wouldn't have lived up to their new deals this season, and maybe, if not probably the next season as well, because, they are young, and they are still developing. The Oilers needed them at 2.5 million-ish max, once they signed these offer sheets, that ended that possibility. Perry did get overpaid with that little bonus, but that doesn't kick in until next year, his base salary can be buried in the minors if they need to, it had nothing to do with this.
      yes, this stinks, but the Oilers picked the lesser of 2 evils, the better gamble, simple as that.

    Shrewd move for the Blues.
    STL had the space, playing time and patience to see if Broberg is the next big thing.
    Edmonton didn’t have that at this time.

    Surprised the Oilers did not buy out Nurse which would have given the Oilers a true two year window to win AND the third year would be minimized impact with the cap increase. No way the Oilers win with Nurse in the lineup at trade deadline. All we can hope for is a nurse LTIR at the trade deadline.

    Perry and Skinner cost them dearly. No point of crying over spilled milk but we lost 4 of the top 5 skaters on the team. So now we have about a 4-5 year window with the main core and then we will can all start watching the Habs.

    When you’re into the mental gymnastics of “Broberg and Holloway weren’t that good” and trying to sell people on Stecher and Emberson, you’re in deep trouble. Oilers won’t have that much cap space at the deadline, and Kane has a no-trade this year.

    • @tamatb

      In order to sign Draisaitl and Bouchard and McD and goalie Skinner,ALL four of them, someone has to go!

    • @FloridaHockeyBros
      @FloridaHockeyBros 2 місяці тому +1

      @@tamatb For sure. I get the reasoning for not matching, but it’s still a tough spot. Affordable young depth is crucial for sustained success. These guys are almost making it sound like the current squad is better off. Also, the cap situation long-term can get tricky if they end up with McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard, and Nurse making about 45% of the team’s money.

    This is better than we all thought. Holloway with arvirdson and skinner is a 3 rd line or fourth. Is not a huge loss. The new defensman can be a shutdown defensman. Nurse can be an offensive defenseman.
    We are good.
    If not trade deadline. Broberg is over paid at 4.5 million- we do not need that.

    • @civilwarwasaninsidejob7405
      @civilwarwasaninsidejob7405 2 місяці тому

      Broberg isn't overpaid. He's overpaid if the Oilers gave him that, because they're in cap hell. But the Blues have plenty of cap space, only a 2 year deal, and plently of playing time to see what they have in a 23 year old. Plus defensemen take much longer to develop, so this contract is for what he may do the next two years, not what he has done.

    Difference (Josh Brown) 658,333
    Difference (Phil Kemp) 883,333
    This is the cap that would accrue IF this is the scenario.
    Using Perry and Ryan reduces this by 375,000 (Perry for Levoie) and 125,000 (Ryan for Pederson)
    That is a 500,000 reduction to the Accrue amount.
    If not keeping Holloway and Broberg was for Cap reasons the best scenario for money is remove the older more expensive 3rd and 4th liners and sub in MUCH cheaper alternatives. Even with that the BEST you can do if I see the math right is $883,333 for an amount to accrue. That's not horrible. More would be better but this gives us 13 forwards (though one of them is Kane) and 7 D plus both goalies. If you LTIR ANYONE you can't accrue cap. That's why they're trying to avoid it with Kane.
