  • Lagerstroemia indica, commonly known as crepe myrtle, is a versatile and visually stunning plant that makes an excellent bonsai.
Originating from China, this species is characterized by its multi-stemmed, deciduous nature, and its ability to develop a wide-spreading, flat-topped, or rounded habit.
As a bonsai, crepe myrtle offers vibrant, long-lasting flowers that add striking color to any setting. It’s particularly popular for its attractive, smooth bark, which peels to reveal a range of colors, and its ability to produce beautiful, crinkled flowers in shades of pink, white, red, or purple.
This plant is favored by songbirds and wrens for nesting, adding an element of wildlife attraction to your bonsai display.
When grown indoors, crepe myrtle bonsais require a period of cold dormancy in winter, which can be achieved by placing them in a cooler, darker location.
This rest period is crucial for the plant's health and flowering in the subsequent season.
In this video, I am starting to shape the bonsai little by little. Bonsai are made in stages and we need to prune and wait for new growth in order to have more and more branches to choose from and make a better overall shape and silhouette.
With proper care, including suitable pruning, adequate sunlight, and appropriate watering, a crepe myrtle bonsai can thrive, offering a miniature yet majestic representation of this beloved species.
