The Tune History: Rated among the finest marches ever written for the pipes, ’The 79th’s Farewell to Gibraltar’ was one of the early quicksteps written for troops on the march. It was composed by Pipe Major John Macdonald of the 79th Cameron Highlanders in June of 1848 when his regiment left Gibraltar for Canada.

I have loved this march for years, especially with pipes and band; but it was only 2 days ago that I discovered through the Internet (which can serve the purposes of go(o)D as well as (d)evil) why this tune from 1848 has its power and truth. It has always been clear that this is rather a celebratory farewell, but I think some kind of security can be felt too. It turns put yhat the joy here is RELIEF. The 79th's posting to the West Indies was changed at the last moment to Canada. To us today that may not seem such great news (!!), but for the Jocks Canada meant extremes of temperature, maybe, but not the guaranteed tropical disease that made the Caribbean a one-way ticket for many a young lad. Moreover, it turns out that, when they got to Canada, the Captain of the troop ship was so afraid of fog in the St Lawrence Seaway that he told the writer of the tune to bring the military musicians on deck and play, to act as a foghorn. This role is still clear today as we listen. So it might be better to call this the 79th's Arrival in Canada, safe and sound. We can "get" an echo of these special emotions as we listen in 2023, and this is the kind of thing that is often done with music through the Holy Spirit.

I first heard this as a child and it gave me goosebumps. I'd no idea then what it was called, but I was captivated.
