How to turbo BMW m50/m52 engine, part 10 - Dyno meet

- Part 10 of the BMW e30 m50 turbo build and part 8 of the m52 turbo winter maintenance series. This time we went to local dyno meet organized by Bmw Tuning Club of Finland (BTCF). We get to make few pulls and did some tuning between those. The m50 turbo project with eBay turbo made 340 hp on first pull. Then we added few degrees of ignition advance for boost areas and made almost 370 hp and 550 Nm then. The m52 turbo made 490 hp but we didn't got the torque number because the RPM information was wrong. On second pull it only made 472 hp and it was caused by loose trigger wheel. And that was the end of the dyno session for us.
You inspire me, I have wanted to make my e30 fast, but after this video I can see myself grinning from ear to ear, and my e-bay turbo is still not even delivered. You make me look forward to getting my 325i going like a comet. Thanks, mate!

490hp is impressive for a "homebrewn" engine that does 193 stock.
Thanks! it was surprise for me too, because highest number I have seen with that turbo and engine has been less than 470hp.

Nc work man.i want to ask you a question.i have m50 engine so when i was driving it normally 4 days ago the car started doing some deep sounds from the bottom of the car and the rpms was stucking when the car is cold is working ok but when it get warm do the same what do u think ?
Πέτρος Στράτος Well no idea :D Those kind of faults require diagnosing the engine itself. No way to tell trough internet.

No it's hp from crank. I don't know about the tune because it's not my car. But BTW. i'm currently working my daily for winter. It has also m52 with s52 cams. I'm aiming for 250 hp with my custom tune. I may make video about that when I get it working.

I have a E34 1994 525i Automatic, it has a stock M50b25TU (Vanos).. It truly is a bulletproof engine! i pushed to the max by setting the Gearbox option to 'manual' which means it wont change gears unless i do *in case you didn't know. no offence of course* .. I did a tire shredding session no problem.. my friends were amazed what an Automatic e34 2.5L can do :P
Now i have a little question.. What do you think of installing a turbo on an automatic transmission? Would it be bad?
Thanks! Comments like these keep me doing these videos. There shouldn't be any problems doing turbo setup to automatic car. Of course there is limits what the automatic gearbox can handle but I don't have any experience about that. Also at least the newer gearboxes communicate with the engine control unit, so doing aftermarket engine management will be problem. But as I know the e34 automatic is standalone unit, so there shouldn't be problem running ie. megasquirt on your car.

Mostafa Abubaker might be a little late but automatic cars actually boost better in some cases, you don't lose boost through gear shifts , leads to faster acceleration

have u built in an oil restriktor für the oil line on the turbo ? that could solve the smoke problem !
Yeah there is restrictor in the line. I think I mentioned it at the last episode. The last bit of smoking was solved by better breather/catch can setup.

joo ton rakentaja pitää kolarikorjaamoa ja on tehnyt noita s2000:sia muutaman. tosin tämä oli ensimmäinen turbolla ja myöhemmin sitten remmillä. vetoja oli joku viitisen sataa? löytyy muuten youtubesta virittäjien jaksosta.

I love the Videos and the cars are great, might want to have that dyno resurface those rollers, I dont think they are supposed to be bare metal.
Thanks. Yeah the rollers are quite worn but that's not by dyno so, not my problem :D
Oh I understand - I just think that the numbers from that dyno might be a little low as the tires I am sure are slipping across the board. But again great videos and great builds.
Thanks. No the numbers are not low. The dyno shows when the rollers are slipping and we got rid of the slipping by putting friction spray to tires.

Nice Videos, please can you tell my more about your wheels. They look like the original BMW 14 inch wheels (in german we call it "Gullideckl"), but bigger in the diameter and wider. Best regards form Bavaria (Germany)

How much boost and have it a decompressie plate or not
0.7 bar of boost and no de-compression plate. Stock headgasket.

Would that be symptoms of the ONE wanting a larger turbo?
Yeah that seems to be bit too small turbo. It will do for now and we could even break the 400 HP limit with that, but not with the stock headgasket (too much exhaust back pressure because of the small turbo). But at least that cheap ass eBay turbo provides what it promises (350-400 hp). The bigger turbo and hunt for more power may be topic for next season of this series ;)
pazi88 What's next, MLS headdie and a bigger eBay turbo? It seems like it's alright quality, just a tad small.
Not eBay turbo this time but bit better quality. But we are still doing the low budget thing so don't worry :D And yes the headgasket will be upgraded too.
pazi88 Good to hear, a friend of mine had a car in his shop with an eBay turbo. The exhaust wheel shifted slightly due to bad quality bearings, shredded the fins off, straight back up the manifold and into the engine. Trashed 5 pistons out of 6.
Ever had any experience turbocharging M50B20s?
Turboing the m50b20 dosn't differ from the bigger b25. Only problem is that there isn't much aftermarket parts for example better pistons, so that limits your power output.

because i just bought a e46 , and i have been thinking about a turbo... but i keep hearing i shouldn't do it because of the aluminum heads. thanks for the fast reply lol
Oh you mean aluminium block. No problems related to that. Both our cars have aluminium block, and there is no reason why that can't be used in turbo engines. of course you can't do anything crazy because because there is no better head bolts (like ARP) that could be used with aluminium block.
pazi88 what about the stories when torque the head pull/strips the tread from the block? (Talk about aluminum M52 and M54 )
What coils does the brown e30 have ???
Stock bremi coils.

Almost. Only m50 connecting rods and Athena Coopering headgasket.

I have stock e30 subframe. The ONE has rear subframe from e34 525i

weak lol im pushing well over 400hp with ebay turbo 50lbs injectors and a super afc for tuning only spent 2500$ on the whole car including buying it
That turbo is bit too small for over 400 hp figures. Of course we can raise the boost but I bet that it will be too much for that cheap ass turbo. We will upgrade it later ;)
ebay turbos don''t usually make a lot less power, they just don't last very long due to poor bearings, tolerances, etc.
You claim 400hp but i would love to see a dyno sheet.
E30s are very light so 470whp is no joke.
