  • Part 3 of the BMW e30 m50 turbo build. In this part we will show how to do turbo oil and coolant lines for a m50/m52 engine. We also show how to time cams for M50NV engine without special tools and how to tighten the crankshaft bolt without torque wrench.

    Using the oil lines for the vanos to supply the turbo is genius. I'm attempting to do something similar now with an e46 323i and M52 engine. Your videos are giving me a lot of good ideas for my project!

    the torque wrench trick was very cool

    • @AtomicWerks
      @AtomicWerks 8 років тому

      This is based in physics and is a really great trick for when you aren't able to use a device to measure. Torque (Nm and ftlb) is based on linear displacement. It can be written as "t(orque)=F(orce)r(adius)"
      1Nm is equal to 1 newton of force at a distance of 1 meter
      1ftlb is equal to 1 pound of force at a distance of 1 foot
      t=Fr=1*1=1
      For example, if I want 200ftlbs on a bolt, I could put:
      200lbs of force 1ft away.
      t=Fr=200*1=200
      100lbs of force 2ft away
      t=Fr=100*2=200
      50lbs of force 4ft away
      t=Fr=50*4=200
      etc. etc.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому +4

      Yep that can be calculated by simple physics formulas. As I did :D

    Some turbo tips for newbs
    Oil the Turbo the DAY YOU GET IT !
    Use a BOV
    Pull the oil return line off, start the engine and SEE that the oil flow is sufficient ! To little oil ,ta ta turbo.

    @nissejarnet 8 років тому

    A tip for next time, loosen the oil pan a little before removing the front cover. And also, tap out the two small pins in the front cover before pulling it out.
    And when installing the cover, tap the pins back in before tightening the screws :)

    I have a question. Couldn't the oil drain go to the oil pan instead of that cover?

    • @codenamecordon
      @codenamecordon 4 роки тому +4

      Of course it could. However, due to the engine angle, just bolting it straight to the oil pan wall isn’t a good solution - the oil line will loop up slightly, meaning that oil will get trapped in the line unless you use a scavenging pump (which makes the system more complex and expensive). Removing the sump for modifying is also more difficult with this chassis and engine combination since you either need to lift the engine or drop the front subframe.
      In addition to all that, draining to the front cover means you’ll have a shorter line, so it drains better. Also, in a low car, breaking a sump isn’t uncommon, but that then means fabricating a new sump. Probably more reasons to it, these are just off the top of my head.

      +Andrew Savill I have a 92 e36 325is that I'm going to be pulling the engine and rebuilding soon (it definitely needs it) when I have the room, time and parts to do it (slowly gathering the parts) and I'm going to turbo it while the engine is out and thinking about experimenting with twin charging because why not. Only thing I haven't figured out yet is where I can find a shop near me to tune it (no performance shops where I live)

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      Twin charging is good setup if you have big turbo. With "small"turbo (less than 500 hp) it's not very feasible, because you can make it spool very low. And i wouldn't recommend the twin charging setup as first boosted setups, because it's much more complicated to build and tune. There is enough to figure out with turbo only. Then go to the twin charger setup, when you have more experience.

    Nice build! Have a question, why you chose that place for turbo oil return line over the sump? Sump seems to be a lot easier choice. Or you cant get the sump off without removing the engine.
    Terveisiä Viro!

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      +myrakas86 Some of the turbos need the oil return to be over the oil level in the sump. For example Holset turbos will smoke and consume oil if the oil return line goes to the sump. I don't know if this particular turbo requires the the return line to be over the oil level but I made it to the front cover just in case. And we may use bigger Holset turbo in future, so in that case we don'n need to change the return.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      +MyKnifeBeLike It's doable but make sure to use premium (98 octane in EU) fuel and be very careful with the engine tune. The stock pistons will crack very easily if the engine knocks. If you are using stock ecu from m52 (siemens ms41)it has very good knock sensing, so it should do very well with good tune and correct maf+injectors.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      +fellowship of the goat Most of the turbos require the oil return line to be above the oil level. Otherwise those turbos will start to burn oil and smoke. You can't get the return line above the oil level by installing it to sump.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      +fellowship of the goat Yes there is no that kind of problems in oil feed. Only the oil drain is critical, but how critical it depends of your turbo. But in general make that as big as you can, no uphill sections and it should end above the oil level in engine. Otherwise you might end up with smoky turbo.

      M8 helicoils. You can check the bolt sizes from realoem for example: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CD11-EUR-05-1995-E36-BMW-328i&diagId=11_1288

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  6 років тому +2

      Mikäpä siinä. Oon minä niitä säätäny vakio moottorinohjauksella turbolle jo jokusen.

    • @mikkoj9
      @mikkoj9 6 років тому

      Miten tuo kone kestää turbottamista?

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  6 років тому

      Hyvin se kestää. Noilla on nyt minun säätämänä ajettu 0,5 - 1 bar paineilla avaamattomilla koneilla. Bensalla sekä viinalla. Kansipahvihan noissa on vakiona jo MLS mallia, niin se kestää perus massatiivistettä huomattavasti enemmän painetta.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      +qweqweawea asdascxycyx This e30 has been built with minimum budget right from the start. It's not like we don't have money, but if there is not much money spent to build the car, we can beat the shit out of it without worrying too much. And these m50/m52 engines are dirt cheap so if the engine breaks, we will just buy new one with couple of hundred bucks.

    hi. im wondering. the place u picked oil from. is it before the filter or after?
    thanks and great video. Lots of like from norway =)

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      Thanks! It's before filter.

    • @Turboharry80
      @Turboharry80 8 років тому

      You dont want it after?

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  8 років тому

      It hardly makes any difference. There shouldn't be any metal particles in the oil and if there is, it always means engine rebuilt and the turbo has to be inspected also in the process.
