For surfing, get a kneeboard. A pal who’s an amputee, right leg at knee, has rekindled his surfing life. In fact better than before as the foot-fins (even one!) let you paddle to catch waves that are marginal using normal techniques. Swim, catch, slide onto your knees and shred. What’s not to like?

Thank you for your very clear explanations ! I’m a 54 years old french lady, my daughter in law and my son, who is a surfer and snowboarder, have had the excellent idea to offer me a surfskate for my last birthday in february. My son has shown me the basics and I’m starting to really improve and having lost of fun !Like you said at the begining of your video, my son always tell me : it’s a surfskate, so imagine the wave ! Now with your video I’m going to look after the details and will go to another level for sure 😄 and will hopefully improve my surf at the meantime 😂🤩

Wow, had to try pumping again after only 5 minutes of this video, and really felt the upper/lower body coordination and rear leg thrust. (Recently got a board and I'm new to board sports.) The discussion of toe and other heel contra motion at 00:03:35 was first time I'd heard and was helpful. Then I finished video--your speed generation at 00:11:45 is crazy. the tai chi exercise at 00:13:44 and 00:21:00 was most helpful demonstration of when compression occurs I've seen in these videos, though I think youtubers get nervous about spending too long on one thing and move on too quickly I'm not sure there was actually a clean example of more than a few seconds to practice along with, I think you could have done that at start of video with a couple solid 1 minute uninterrupted demos. backwards lean at 00:21:39 surprised me, I'll run out to try when the sun comes back up. I'd still love to hear forehand wave vs backhand wave compression explanation, maybe filmed on a driveway slope with Dave and Alex in blue hula skirts to represent the wave. Thanks!!

Nice..The grom got it in the end..)..next step, visualise pumping as if surfing on a forehand wave as demonstrated here and also as if on a backhand wave so instead of expanding towards the way you are facing (towards a forehand wave ) you contract towards the side you are facing and expand backwards..Basically switching the sides you contract/expand on.

I think I made this comment on anther video, but the thing that is being overlooked here is generating speed out of the toe edge turn versus out of the heel edge turn. Both can be done. Non-surfers tend to gravitate to generating their power coming up (extending the knees) on a toe edge turn. But you can also bend down on the toe edge turn and generate the power coming up on the heel edge turn. I guess if you just surf skate on flat bit is okay if you never do this. But if you want to apply it to surfing or snowboarding you should practice it on a surf skate. It is simply a backside bottom turn when surfing. Or pumping for speed when riding backside on a wave.
The interesting thing here is that this is what Dave is doing! Notice that he only generates forward motion when he is coming up on his heel edge turn. He bends his knees on the toe edge and extends on the heel edge. Not so intuitive, but it got him moving.
For people who only do toe-edge power generation, I would suggest doing an exercise where you are doing circles (or squares) only turning in the heel-edge direction, only generating power when coming up out of the heel edge turn. The exercise can, of course, be done making toe edge circles, but again, you would likely find that easier.
Heel edge power generation will also help if you want to take your surfskate into skate parks to start carving in 3 dimensions (transition skating), not just on flats.

Excellent. I think this is the physics of surfskate (and any skateboard) pushing. Of course please correct anything that may be wrong with my analysis. Say you want to travel the straight line A to B. Pumping is swerving off that line, first one side then the other. Indeed it's all about the action of the back foot. As the board turns so its rear wheels travel a certain line at an angle to the AB-line, the back foot pushes the back wheels at a right angle to the AB-line, but that force translates at the angle the wheels are travelling, because they can go forward on the line they are travelling but cannot go sideways (like the skeg (fin) of a surfboard). The result is like the speed of a bigger gear (90 degrees) enhanced by being transferred to a smaller gear. Therefore I would say the generation of speed is about the veering off the line AB being relatively small and the timing of the rear foot push exactly coinciding with it. That would mean the knee bend doesn't have to be deep.

I think that might also mean that how you swing your arms is incidental to the rear foot push and pull and is more to maintain good form or rhythm.

I notice the guy on the YOW is struggling where the guy on the Carver picked it up really fast. This makes complete sense to me how the Carver is the best for beginner but also a board where you feel more safe practicing the movements.

Hi, Steve. Love the channel. Great tutorial. I’m 5’11” at about 200 lbs. I’m looking at the Carver Triton Prismal 32. For my weight it’s ok, but do you think the boardlength fits my height or should I go for a longer one? Oh, and my stance is about 19”. Keep up the great work.

@@SurfskateLove Thanks, Steve. Just ordered the board. If I’m not mistaken that was the only thing I missed in your selector tool, the option to choose a rider weight class. Tx again.

That squeak is my bad. Beginner mistake and easily fixable. Truck spring just needed some grease.
