Awesome. You did a great teaser for checking out Justin Lee Schultz further, and I'm a big fan. My takeaway from this is to ask myself "Is there something more that I may be missing?" when I'm watching these short form videos from great young musicians. Cotton candy and popcorn and the like provide instant satisfaction, but you can't live on that stuff. That's where a mentor or someone who has more experience (like you guys) can step in and help us get into the material that takes time and effort to appreciate, and which can really feed the soul.

The Blue Note in NYC is just so well prepped for any kind of band you throw in there. Example: 1997 I saw McCoy Tyner plays Burt Bacharach with Strings in that space (before renovation). The audience was squished in next to NY Phil string players practically sitting in our laps (Snarky Puppy does this on the regular now). One of the greatest concert experiences of my life.

Last year, I acquired a Yamaha C6, elevating the piano to a secondary main instrument.
While I value the content you produce, I feel compelled to express my concern regarding videos that critique the performances of young prodigies like Justin Lee Schultz. I believe it’s crucial to acknowledge the unique talent of these individuals and consider the context in which their performances are showcased.
For instance, when featuring a prodigy at the Blue Note in New York City during a festive night curated by Robert Glasper, the focus naturally gravitates towards impressive moments. Disregarding the context and failing to recognize the brilliance of such performances is uncomfortable to witness. It’s important to embrace the intent behind these videos, whether it’s showcasing at a music merchant conference like NAMM highlighting new instruments. In these scenarios, prodigies often engage in a playful, chops-based performance style, and understanding this context is vital.
I respectfully urge you to consider the circumstances surrounding these performances before critiquing them. Embracing and acknowledging the indisputable talent of new generations can enhance the credibility and inclusivity of your content.

If you were to ask Bill Evans why play jazz why play a solo on a Standard or why play standards what you'd come up with would bear zero resemblance to a NAMM video.

You know before 33 1/3 LP, most recorded jazz compositions were not more than 3 minutes. That means 100s of musics, groups. ensembles made improvised brillance happen within the time of tick-tok or instagram video, and they usually had only one or a few chances to do it. So, brillance and brevity historically go hand-in-hand in jazz.
Kind of hard to imagine such young guys listening to the old jazz records for hours (as we OG's do). Must be the case though because would they be able to play like that without studying the greats first?

I had no clue that NAMM had such a large stigma attached to it 🤔
I was thrilled to see that video a couple years ago, because everybody wonders, “oh man what would happen if those two guys played TOGETHER…” I get that Namm is obnoxious. So is GMA week, or label showcases or anything that is basically selling your product and hoping to kind of make you feel a forced fast connection. But for those 2 geniuses it was a chance to play with a guy they admire. Like an all star game where Isaiah lobs the ball to Jordan. Fans complain about all star games not being real or not being pure etc. Namm is a bunch of hot dog playing and all about a sale, but if that jam took place because 2 guys happened to be there at the same time, I consider that the bright side, not the dark side of it. In my teen years I could never watch stuff like this and learn it. There’s a video where Justin plays a Shaun Martin tune for Shaun. That is inevitably because of the accessibility of UA-cam or other social media. It definitely makes things a little yucky, but it is amazing all the great music I can watch now that there was no way to see or be aware of in the first place. To say, “eww I don’t like the shredding snippets at NAMM” even if everybody kind of gets it, that borders on being unthankful for the free show and learning tools. To be able to watch it half speed and transcribe it. To see shows that might never come to my town. Saying it is an icky environment because of pointing and grinning and booths jammed together and volume restrictions and all the stupid stuff that goes on, it is bordering on pretentious or jaded. I love the teaching videos on this channel, but the idea that 15 year olds or 25 year olds that can play stuff that these guys can’t even play (multiple instruments, flawlessly), and say anything but “more power to whatever is yielding this insane talent and collaboration”… it’s kind of just as silly or icky as NAMM is. These kids are monsters and seem totally affable and I saw Justin with Dave Koz, and he looked happy to play and be a showman. Take my applause and my money. I can sift around the yuckiness of trade shows and still dig the show.

Could do both, shred and swing. Shredding doesn’t have the same musicality but it can be more fun especially when being pushed like a sprint race.
I must say I enjoy Justin Lee Schultz doing his thing more than Joey Alexander doing his thing. Justin Lee Schultz seems like hes just having fun, were as Joey Alexander seems like 50 year old in a body of little boy

I really like Yohans playing and range but he's not a performer and it feels awkward and forced the way he's being promoted. Even Justin Lee Schultz is stretched pretty thin by today's standards - more Disney channel than Blue Note. Domi and jd Beck, Roni Kaspi have a future not just because they have a look but they're doing things that at least attempt to push at the margins of jazz

Peter and Adam, I love your show(s) and your playing, but you're way over the top on the critique of these young guys. You sound like budding gatekeepers. It's not a good look. It reminds me of when Miles ran Wynton off the stage, saying Wynton couldn't play the type of jazz he played. That sort of thing doesn't age well. The worst part of it is that you're giving people, (who would otherwise be supporting young jazz artists), license to unfairly disregard the current jazz. Nah, you need to stop.

@@zeitgeistyreport justin's, domi, molina's - their playing reminds me of watching a combo video. just a ton of technical flourishes without a story. whole arrangement built around connecting each run. entertaining for the first 20 seconds but then it's really boring.
some people would rather enjoy a whole football match instead of a 2 minute string of ball handling/dribbling with a ton of jumpcuts.
