      because he's comparing it to the Mercedes Professional G Ute. Cost is above $110k.So...simple maths, 70 series costs circa $70k, Mercedes cost circa $110k, 110-70=40. There we have it! he saves $40,000. That really wasn't that hard & guess what, i didn't even have to use a calculator :)

    Andrew suffers the 1st world dilemma of tons of choices and the income to do near anything you like. I suggest we all think back to our early 20's when we were broke and stupid. We did things with little money. We had fun. We kept it simple. We made lifelong friends. We never had too many choices to agonize over.

    Andrew, you should have picked something other than a 70 series. I think it would have been more interesting to see a G-Wagon, Y62 Patrol or one of the big American trucks because there arent as many people setting them up for overlanding. You'll have different cosiderations like diesel vs petrol and solid axles vs independent. Doing another 70 series feels much of the sameness.

I'm excited for your new build and the fact that you are designing a vehicle that we wouldn't be able to build here in the states doesn't matter because you are teaching transferable skills -- at least to those of your viewers who take the time to pay attention. Keep up the great work professor!!!

    i would go the 6x6 with extend cab area making the the 70 series 2-4 foot longer over standard cab or modify the cab area and make it a trailer conversion..
    I think a 6x6 with a body fill cut using the cab space of the crew cab and the whole cab area of the troopy would likely be the best option
    reason why there is supported co-op because they typically stick within spec of toyota..

    If you are planning of putting some kind of camper at the back of single cab aren't you having access to the camper from the driver's seat? Couldn't you put the gear inside the camper and access it as if you were accessing something you left of the rear passenger seats of a double cabin? I do not get this point at al. Isn't the camper at the back going to be connecting with the cabin?

    Great video Andrew.
    I do have concerns about the turning circle doing your head in. Furthermore if you're going for a GVM upgrade, how will the engine cope with all that weight? Will it not be underpowered?
    I feel like you're stretching the limits of what the 70 series can offer. You may not have needed an Iveco Daily's payload as you "don't need to live out of it" but why not "underutilise" the Iveco? It comes in dual-cab with the payload squarely on the back axle and doesn't need any chassis or axle work! I hope all the work you put into it won't result in an inferior vehicle to the Iveco Daily.
    Why not have a lightweight Daily rather than a maxed out cruiser?

    It was nice that you considered a Patriot Camper super tourer and you got to see our 6x6 b4 we did. We have our own camper(slide-on) that we have available to be bolted directly onto the tray as you saw it. All we have to do is remove the half canopy that usually sits behind the spare tyre rack. I must admit that Patriot provided a lot of what we wanted in a 79 dual cab and not cutting a 200 was for me a waste of 1/3 of a vehicle. I know putting a Jmacx 6x6 conversion ticked a lot of boxes as well but the weight carrying capacity is a bonus too.Our final product delivers to us what is a two way bet as we can tow our camper as it has its own trailer and leave it behind anywhere setup and still do day trips away from camp or we can remove the camper from the tray and leave it setup on legs(braced) and act as a dual cab trayback returning whenever and reconnecting as a single unit. I will watch what your final product ends as with interest and you never know might run into somewhere out there in the outback. I will agree with you that a single cab chassis is to restrictive for the reasons you stated no space.

    Hi Andrew. I enjoyed this video. However, i don't understand how the 200 series was eliminated. You don't have to use patriot. There are companies like Creative Conversions that could convert it to an extended cab chassis. Once the vehicle is converted you take over and build the rest yourself. Certainly will cost more but surely you then have the perfect foundation. Comfort, off road capability and payload. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

    Huge cost and inconvenience for a coke and camera! I'm usually a big fan of your choices, Andrew, but I believe this stretched vehicle may stretch your temper when completed. The cons for this length vehicle far outweigh the pros. As a single cab chassis driver myself, I know you can fit a lot into the smaller space. Can I suggest putting more of your proven design skills into refitting a single cab with a purpose built fridge and perhaps a designer camera rack. This seems a far better option than an oversized dual cab!

  • @lastknownlocation8760
    @lastknownlocation8760 5 років тому +3

    Sorry Andrew
    G300 has 2080 kg payload before you put a body on the chassis. Not 4 tonne.
    4490 GVM
    2410 Tare weight
    2080 payload (as a cab/chassis)
    minus body weight
    = payload after body fitted
    Payload is what you can carry
    I like your comment “all about access” that’s so true
    Multilayering of gear is a pain in the backside
    (Rubiks cube camping.)
    I don’t agree that Toyota should build them only in a longer wheelbase. They’re designed for carrying 4 or 5 people and some gear. Not one guy and a large camper. Maybe the option of two wheelbases would be good. If they only built them longer, they’d be heavier on the front axle when not loaded.
    Every specification is always a compromise. They build them for many applications. You’ll solve some problems and create some more. Ramp over angle and turning circle for a start.
    I think you should just keep your troopy or build another one.
    Good luck with your build!!!

    hi Andrew
    yesss, that's it - stretch it :-)
    I have the same "love" when it comes to Overland Vehicles. My decision was also a Toyota 70 Series DC. It's a HZJ79 with the famous 1HZ 6Zyl. Motor - not directly from Toyota as they do not Import them in Europe. But you can get them via Dubai but need some modification like a DPF.
    Finding a Cabine took some time, I had also a long List with must have's and don’t want anymore …. for example cold feet or damp and cold Clothes in the morning - so I came to a cabine you also recognised (min. 3:38 in your Video) … it was one of my best choices I've ever did. I always thought when you in earlier Videos where talking about a nice and clean room for editing and living - my cabine would fit your Needs as well :-)
    I'm very curious how your DreamCar will look like!

    Andrew, are you stuck in a rut with Toyota? I know the market is compressing for fuller size trucks and SUVs but isn't it time to get the comfort and move into the off roader with trailer or camper setup? A shorter rig without the weight of the camper is more fuel efficient easier to maneuver into the tighter parts of the trail while the trailer is not connected and having the trailer means more fuel and water capacities for even longer trips. The trailer would not be a taxing on the off roader because you avoid the tougher sections while towing and return each night after a day of exploring without the trailer attached. This would create a longer trip time but it would provide for even more photo/video opportunities during the trip. Just a suggestion.

    Firstly, Toyota is on a whole other planet in thinking what customers want vs what customers actually want. That will never change. I'm surprised the 79 has remained in Toyota's lineup and not faded out in exchange for another Prius variant. Secondly, I'm a little disappointed you're going with the 79 again. Yes it's perfect, we know that. How about picking something that's totally unexpected and a bit clumsy and show us what you can do with it with all the skills and techniques you've aquired? Yes it won't be perfect, but will be a fun challenge. Sometimes u just gotta do best with what you got.

      Have you watched the Black truck in action or Jase Andrews Back in Black 79 from All4 Adventure, the only mistake I think Andrew is making here and only can base it off cost is not going with a 4495 GVM Jmacx system which is probably the best out there especially considering the custom canopy build he is putting on the rear, that really surprised me, the company seems light on details on there website as well, also Jmacx system is more than just an extension it is built around supporting thst extension properly, diffs housing, axles and panhards and radius arms and being the canopy is a live in style rather than live out style that seems to me a major oversight.

      Lol rear wheel steering. Well I guess I can hold my head up with the purchase of my long wheel base Nissan Frontier here in the US. Been trying to decide between turning the Frontier or my 1994 Chevy Suburban K2500 6.5 Diesel into an overlander. Oh the turning radius on my Frontier absolutely Sucks so I imagine the stretched landy is going to enjoy the same fate, but I still love my truck. Have Used it for work and play every day since 2013 and it's still going strong with 280,000 miles on it. Hauls a heck of a load In the bed or towing really well too. Had a 2001 Toyota Tundra 4.7 TRD Limited before which was a great truck as well but I gotta say the Frontier has been just as good if not better. At least for a guy that could never dream of affording a land cruiser.

    • @maverick2242
      @maverick2242 5 років тому +2

      Pete M Well prob depends on who you choose, to do the extension and what solutions they have! but from what I can see with std conversions you can keep the stock tank as is, it just depends on the solution for the extension, I am really surprised by Andrews choice for quite a few reasons, but then he doesn’t talk about those and may cover them in a later vid. But Superior or Jmacx imo would have been my choices, I like Jmacx because imo they have the biggest GVM upgrade for the 79, 4495kg all states approved, its a proper conversion! not a cut and weld and bracket, plus they have a proper track correction solution not a fudge, future proofing the vehicle esp considering what Andrew wants to custom build on top of it, this company he has chosen the track correction doesn’t impress me at all, if you are gonna do something like this to me do it right, cheap when you are investing the money for this anyway doesn’t seem like a good plan to me, there are many options just with those 2 companies alone re budget, but the GvM upgrade legal in all states with a true track correction eg diff, axles upgrade, panhard rods, radius arms and links, brakes handbrake and driveshaft and more, option built in for a long range tank, which he will want as well, best departure angle on a 79 I have seen because the rear is completely cut off and replaced with a complete rear end it’s impressive. better way better than Toyota’s rear chassis, Superior have a clean solution as well and best axles in the business. check out those companies to learn more, good info on both. But so many options.Another thing with these options is wheel size and lift options, up to 35” and 4” lift so lots of scope, not that Andrew would want 4” lift I suspect but the scope is there without messing up the geometry. When you mess with one thing you need to beef up or match the other areas, an extension done right will beef up the chassis hence the GVM upgrade, remember the base of the vehicle is engineered around its current GVM and then still not overlanding, so the other components upgrade imo become important too.

    Andrew, just as sugestion, I drove a Dodge M886 truck for some years as a mobile workshop and camping vehicle. As it was designed as a military ambulance, it has greate insulation and space in the back, it has access to the back directly from the cab, and a lot of room in the cab itself, even being a single cab truck.
    It was converted from its original 318ci petrol engine to a GM 6.2L diesel and 33 inch BfGoodrich MT tires. It was great off roading, good highway speed, and not that bad fuel economy. Give it a look, may be you can get some ideas. Hope its not to late.

    Jmacx 4495 GVM Coil Conversion.
    Nice ride and flex on coils
    GVM upgrade, plenty of safety margin for weight and max allowed on car licence.
    300mm wheel base extension
    Or are multi drive making a setup to match this?
    Will be interesting to see what camper setup you come up with to take advantage of the extra wight limits.
    Something along the lines of a pop top with a double bed over the cab and rest of dining/kitchen/toilet/shower on the tray area.
    So many available designs out there however never quite exactly what you would want. Would be interesting if you did your own full custom build with the one piece insulated composite panels and internal fit out to your overland/film making requirements.

    With all due respect Andrew i disagree with you. The 79 series is designed perfect for its intended purpose. If your purpose exceeds the chosen vehicles' purpose then you've chosen the wrong vehicle. You once said this in one of your videos. It's much better to just buy the vehicle that is designed and engineered from factory for what you want. But that's the point isn't it? That's why so many 70 series owners modify their vehicles. Because they can't NOT get behind the wheel of one. It's a special kind of love that you (and i) have experienced. I own a 79 series dual cab GXL and the only thing i have modified is extend the gear stick like you did on your troopy by 2 inches. Which is hardly a modification. I have an alloy full sized canopy bolted onto the factory alloy tray and even with stock leaf springs it sits well. Lightweight is the key. And it's so comfortable with the weight on the back now. I will never ever modify anything else on my 79. Not even the stock tyre size. Because i will only make it worse.
    I am of course excited to follow your build of the new Landcruiser 79. I know you will have a lot of fun building it. And yes, you will dearly miss your 78 series troop carrier! Cheers mate and keep up the fantastic videos!

    I recall the test drives of the dual cab round the time you came to Australia and met with Rhon. then handed it back for the troopy. Fixing that infamous toyota wheel track again must be delightful every time you buy a new landcruiser might as well extended it while you're there.

Hope you enjoyed your time down that neck of the woods. My goodness was it blowing a gale though. Would have needed more like a dead lion than a dead cat if you were getting audio there today!

    Hey Andrew. Why not do a modest cab extension on a single cab and leave the wheelbase as is? You'd have space to stow your stuff and still decent handling?

  • @muddymaker3721
    @muddymaker3721 5 років тому

    Why not install a lazy axle to an existing duel cab 70 series? You can up the payload without all of the other headaches that come with extending a wheelbase on a vehicle.

    Widen the rear axle so same track
    Auto option
    Rear coil springs instead of leaf
    They'd be the perfect 4wd
    My issue is at their price you have to pay a fortune then sort all that yourself

    Not too big, no body changes required, still has an excellent turning circle and reliable.

    Is the super long wheel base going to harm the off road utility??
    I know you’re reluctant to change the body but a super cab or cut down the body so it only has thin rear access doors and storage that is reachable from the drivers seat might work too. Then only a mild wheelbase extension.

    I love the direction and thinking of your next build. If you havent already, you should look at a Four Wheel Camper Flatbed model to put on a Norweld tray! It is a super well designed and functional camper, with tons of benefits including getting all of the weight in front of the rear axle and as low as possible! I have that setup here in the US and have spent over 600 nights in it so far.

    Considered a 1500 ram? Also patriot campers has a secondary business PCOR that makes just the Supertourer trays. Would be great to see a 300mm extended 79 with a PCOR tray on it. (PCOR makes a 300mm extended 79 tray off the shelf)

  • @Nafskie
    @Nafskie 5 років тому

    I have a 130 defender and had an idea to stretch it to 177". six door with the 110 high cap tub to have it where i may take my whole family with me as well as my weekend toys in the back. Axle placement is critical, if you are to extend the rear axle it should be either in the middle or 30% inwards from the rear bumper puttin it in either the 50% or 60% of the rear tub. this way it carries the extra load and still offers you decent turning radius. My 130 has a crappy turning radius stock, so extending it to a 177" would make it near impossible to do a three point turn on city streets. something else you should consider.

  • @MiniLuv-1984
    @MiniLuv-1984 5 років тому

    You currently have space to work, where will you work in the 79 with a canopy? If the answer is a slide on type of arrangement, then how will you deal with the extra height? Many questions Andrew and very exciting because I'm sure you have dealt with all these and a whole lot I haven't considered. Looking forward to the next instalment.

      Bob have you driven one?
      where do you start.... for 80k you get Ply door panels wrapped with vinyl, 2 shitty speakers in the dash, centre console that so low you can’t even lean on it, average seats and almost no NVH. A 90mm difference in rear wheel track, leaf under suspension with as much flex as a chopping board, a clutch that can border line hold factory torque levels. Air conditioning and cruise control is still an option on a gxl.
      The dual cab standard has a terrible wheel base that just becomes sketchy when heavily loaded, especially with the standard wheel track. Literally the only positive I can think about is that nice diesel V8 up the front which is no ruined by a DPF you can’t legally remove.
      My father in law has one and it 140k invested in it and it has no chassis mods, coils or portals or anything crazy. They are built for the farm and I can’t understand why people are so obsessed with them
