“Mermaids” is an umbrella term. It includes mermen, sirens, merfolk, and much more! It’s 2020, it’s their life, and if you don’t like them, just look the other way. It’s as easy as that! Let them be happy!

I thought the word mermaid comes from maiden meaning female, but if you can be what gender makes you happy then anyone can be a mermaid

I agree! But I do have to mension. If Someone were to come up to me for example and ask If I'm a mermaid, I'd correct them and say that I'm a merman. It's kinda like walking upto a girl and calling them a boy (unless their gender is different to their sex. That's a whole other topic).

    • @alces_fiend
      @alces_fiend 2 роки тому +2

@@fuzzyx2face it does originate from that word, but drag queens and cross dressers are also a thing, so you could identify as a man, but preform as a mermaid or even just have fun as one

EXACTLY!!! I grew up in the late 50s/60s... girls were supposed to grow up, get their Mrs and live happily ever after.
All the movies and TV shows had boys doing all the fun things. Girls just sort of stood around and watched.
I like boys, but I also wanted to BE them, or rather to do what they were doing. Like that guy from Sea Hunt... I did finally learn to scuba dive like 40 years later, and my dive instructor oddly resembled Mike Nelson!
Mom tried to stuff me into pink girly dresses... to this day I hate pink. Well, except fuschia, or magenta...
And I will just add that none of this has to to with gender ID or where you are on the who-you-are-attracted-to spectrum.
Straight cis female... still wanted to be Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker, Legolas and Han Solo...

I found that having a bunch of reasons as for why you're a merman helps a lot, you shouldn't have to explain your self and can simply say that it's what you love, but sometimes people od push you to that point, so keeping a hold of reasons not only helps to get other people to understand, but also helps you to remember why you love doing what you're doing! I have been doing it and it seriously helps. Another tip would be to make it apart of your identity (only if your confrotable doing it) what I mean by this is, when you meet someone, bring up the fact that you are a merman, and it will be difficult at first, as stepping out of your comfort zone is a scary thing, (trust me I know) but it's how we grow. Plus I personally have found that by expressing my love for merfolk, I have become more confident in every aspect of my life, now this may not be the same for you or for anyone else, but it could be. Getting Confortable with the idea means moving out of your confort zone, but the thing is that the confort zone acts like a homing bubble, if you step out of it, the bubble will automatically grow around you without you stepping back into it, thus, the thing you were once uncomfortable with, you are now Confortable in. I hope this helps. Have a great day!

I was pretty scared about the title but was very relieved very quickly. Just came across the channel, and I love it. I'm an actor/ performer and I was introduced to "mermaiding" about 5 or 6 years ago by a few fellow guards while I was working as a summer lifeguard in college; one very sweet woman in particular, (I miss her) worked as a lifeguard, a swim coach, swam with fin funtail tail for fun, and also made appearances at kids parties to help supplement her college fund as she studied marine biology..amazing right? So, one day when I was working I was able to come in early before my shift and try out her monofin, and I took to swimming in it so so fast. That was really surprising because I am a completely self-taught swimmer, but I remembered swimming at that same local waterpark and trying to "swim like a mermaid" in my childhood, because I'm a 90's baby and loved "The Little Mermaid" so much. I regret not getting into the hobby/ lifestyle back then, but I was still very insecure with myself, my sexuality, my self-expression, etc. and it was much easier to play characters, then be myself and enjoy things for myself, without fear of judgement. The anxiety of the attention mermaiding tends to draw (especially back then) was too much for me to overcome to purchase my own finfun tail. However, another friend group of mine recently started a FB group/ local merpod and I've been trying to figure out what monofin I would like to buy for myself when I can get back to work and afford one ,as well as feel safe swimming in public again. You channel has been very helpful, informative, and just gave me a mood boost watching your lovely videos, thank you, and keep on swimmin'!

My late brother, when he was very very young, watched the latest supergirl movie at time. He would put on his super man outfit, but declare he was super girl. It was never challenged or corrected. He just loved the character and wanted to express himself. He had no identity issues, it just was what it was. If adult men also want to be a mermaid instead of a merman, what's the problem? It is what it is and there is no need for any assumptions about anyone. So thank you for speaking out.

Hi Courtney, you speak to me from the soul. When my husband discovered the fun of swimming with the monofin for himself, the word mermaiding felt strange. It excludes all the other "sea creatures". Daniel therefore came up with the idea of calling that whole merfolking. In Germany, it is still mainly women or girls who live out this hobby, but thank God more and more men, boys and nonbinary people are joining them. Our fins in Fulleschwarm Nordhessen Kassel are colorful. Everyone is welcome.

I figured the word mermaid as it goes in a hobby context was generally a gender neutral phrase. It's not that much different from the words pharaoh or prince (vtm-wise).
I must wonder if part of the issue is perception and...entitlement? I don't know if entitlement is the best word for it--an unhealthy protectiveness?
Even if people within (for the most part) the hobby treat it as gender neutral as well, mermaids denote women to people outside of the hobby. As time goes on, this will likely change. There's still quite a stigma around men enjoying mermaiding, and I do see the occasional comment from men not joining in for numerous reasons such as: they don't want to be seen as pedophiles, insecurities, etc.
Mermaiding's already a niche thing as it is, and looked down upon to some extent. On the other side of the matter, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some people who wouldn't want mermen around period because they believe there are already so many male-dominated activities, and men getting into mermaiding constitutes a violation of some kind of space.
    It's quite frustrating all around.

My brother is a "merman" and he even he is like "we all are mermaids. I know I am male, so does everyone who asks or jsut looks at me.. I don't need to change a whole word just to feed any men-egos."
And I get the point. I think you can see what someone is, and if not you can ask kindly what their Mermaid name is or what they want to be called or anything.
I also don't like when people say "no men can't be mermaids" "they only can be mermen" like . . .

I love this, my only comment on there was stating my mom told me I was too old to be a mermaid, lol 😂. I never commented about that. My son wants to be a mermaid not a merman. He dosnt like the sound of merman. He says mermaid sounds better and he merman can't have the pretty colors like mommys tails. I won't allow him too yet. I let him dress up in this mermaid blanket but he's too young for swimming in a tail. I keep telling him once he's older and can swim better. (So I don't get hate and people understand. My sons 5 and he's not a strong enough swimmer to even swim with a mono fin no less a tail.) But any tips on what ages are good? I read mix things on this. 1 thing said 10, another 13 then even another said not until 16. My #1 thing is safety.

I'm waiting for the day the 'vocal minority' removes the word 'man' from human.
Alien: "Hello Earthling, are you a human?"
Me: "No, I'm just Hu - I'm gender neutral. No gender specific handles are allowed."
    Alien: "Why?"
Me: "You'll have to ask the folks that have a problem with men being mermaids. They started it all."

You say this like it’s a joke but I’ve absolutely seen people writing “womyn” because “women” is part of the patriarchy... or something. If that floats their boat, fine, have fun, but I start edging away from the ones insisting I follow suit

I personally really like the verbiage 'merfolk'/'mercreature' for myself because it removes the gendered language from it entirely, at the end of the day we are all just fishies 🤷‍♂️🐟🐠

All my comforters (yes there's more than one LOL) and the white fluff blanket (not the sparkly one that's sometimes on the bed) are from Bed Bath and Beyond. The sparkly white one is from Walmart. :)
