Although hopefully upgrading makes it a tiny bit easier. You did a lot of upgrading and just general progress already. Support to the end, fish boil down to how much each square is worth, MOST fish are pretty close 5-7 dollars/sqr. The cultists are def dead, i think the limit is a few days per fish, kinda harsh.
Answer for getting the Abyssal fishing line: Get things for Researcher: Step 1. Light-up-octopus, Light-up-squid, Jellyfish-in-net Step 2. Get stuff from broken outpost Step 3. Profit
The tiger mackerel is at gale cliff during the day in coastal water, and the snake mackerel is at devils spine in coastal water. Using the improved net and a rod makes it easier.

The Crab Rock Slab is more useful because that was have really big space for crab. 3 Other is Lame because they was big and not to much give advantage. 37:06 if you wan't more faster you must research the most powerfull Engine that so Fast, I even need Haste to Drift. 48:45 Hooded Figure is Late game mission, i must tell you is very hard found fish they want if you don't know every fish location they want. And that mean only Death you will get. But if you can finish three fish they want you will get book, not best thing but you can use it. Best Methode is you have all fish before you talk to them. I can list the every figure and all fish they want if you need it.
Don't worry, GM, there are two endings - and as long as you make the right choices the prophecy will not come to pass. You just have to listen to the right people. Edit: also, I can't believe you can't see the good in the new magic rod you got - sure, it's slow, but IT'S TINY! You can literally fit that anywhere! Get a rod that works for the other places, and you're golden!

With the right equipment installed you can fish in every environment without the need to swap fishing gear, so yes, upgrading does make things easier.

you can use your net to catch the glowing jellyfish i guess?
Check the encylopedia for clues on where to find certain fish.
Have you gone farther down the map. there is an ice island lower down the map. You get a cool. Looking net at the end of that mission.
Use the net to catch the jelly fish for the researcher she gives you abyssal

Considering how much Sanity problems are popping up, you might want to use that other light slot.
Every net has it own inventory
If you finish the researchers task you can research the 2x2 winch for oceanic, abyssal and hadal. the one on bottom right is not worth it.
