Gotta give Japan and their manager more credit for coming back to beat two European heavyweights. Japan has great fighting spirit and their manager made good tactical adjustments in both games. A big part of why Germany were ousted is that Japan took match #1 by the scruff of the neck in the second half and bagged all three points. If Germany had managed at least one point vs. Japan, Germany would have had a much better chance of advancing.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this so far, but it certainly crossed my mind. England, Holland , and France had all done the same thing in resting several key first eleven players. Then, luck obviously played a part as it always does in the WC. And finally yes, defensive issues. But by far the biggest reason was Spanish self-interest and it's very clear when you hear Luis Enrique's Post match interview.

From what I remember, Germany is in golden age during Klinsmann year in 2000s, then you have Ballack years, then Schweinsteiger years. The German coach should have started young forwards like Adeyemi and Moukoko with a solid midfield of Gundogan and Musiala for support. I believe there are younger and better players for Germany that could have done the job for this world cup. The older players could have provided the stability once the game is already clinched or provide some spark on the last minutes of the game. The German FA need to realize that the last time they won a world cup,it was full of young and talented German players.

Its embarassing that Spain lost this game in this way. They knew Germany wouldnt score 7 more goals when they saw the result at halftime and just threw the game. The moment Costa Rica got the lead Spain was very nervous. Its just a scandal and has nothing to do with sportsmanship. Over 80% possession and still no shot from 46-75. minute. If this is accepted the next step would have been Germany gifting Costa Rica 3 goals in the last minutes to knock Spain out. Basically the same Spain did but even more obvious. Its the World Cup and this is the opposite of fair play. Shame on Spain.

Not a German supporter but I never really considered Hansi Flick the right man for this German National Team. What Schweinsteiger said can be taken in two perspectives, 1. He is wrong, the Bundesliga is full of German Talent, but who is scouting and picking them, if Bayern could they would have bought them all, team selection for the German team may be a bit biased, 2 if developing certain type of players is a problem then there must be a cause, maybe a certain Bundesliga rule or clause? When it comes to generating the next talent Spain, Netherlands and Germany are usually the best at it, Germans have no excuse for this one. All I hear from Hansi are excuses.

I wouldn’t blame Flick for this. The defense is a major flaw at the moment. Raum was fantastic on offense but failed to get back a lot. Sule is a big waste of space and Klostermann was clueless most of the time. Rudiger was the best defender and even he made costly mistakes. Not picking Hummels made no sense to me for this tournament. He’s too smart to not be back there when the rest of the defense is a struggle. Ginter should have been starting over Sule.

The lack of a striker and not enough quality in Defence are the main problem. I also asked myself as well if Hansi Flick is just to close to Löw‘s style. The rest of the criticism is just nonsense. Germany played a different system in 2018 for example.
I hope the reaction of the DFB will be like 20 years ago when group stage exits at the euros and early exits in the World Cup 94 and 98 meant total change.
