Qatar - In the spotlight of the World Cup | DW Documentary

- The 2022 Soccer World Cup in Qatar is hugely controversial. The allegations range from corruption in the awarding of the tournament to Qatar to harsh criticism of the host nation for its human rights record, and its World Cup carbon emissions.
Even as the World Cup gets underway, there’s been no letup in the criticism. The decision to hold the prestigious sports event in the middle of the desert, in the small Gulf state of Qatar, has been controversial from the start. FIFA officials are accused of accepting bribes to award hosting rights to Qatar. Qatar itself, meanwhile, is accused of exploiting hundreds of thousands of migrant workers to build its World Cup stadiums. Then there are the huge carbon emissions. The tournament was moved to winter to avoid Qatar’s summer temperatures of 50+ degrees Celsius. But even in November, the stadiums need significant air conditioning.
Journalist Christa Hofmann shows how the conservative Muslim emirate is looking to establish itself on the global stage with mega sports events like the World Cup. She visited the newly built stadiums and spoke with migrant workers - as well as Qatari officials, World Cup fan representatives, and Qatar and Middle East analysts.

I see how Węstern countries sanction countries such as cuba, russia, iran, venezuela, belårus, myanmar because of the lack of freedom of speec and lgbtq rights, but they don't sanction Qatar, sauai arabia, china, vietnam because of the lack of freedom of speec and lgbtq rights. #Western Hypocrisy
.
And why does anybody need to be sanctioned? Isn’t it up to each country to decide what is right for them? Which rules they want to have in THEIR territory? Why should it be up to Germany or up to the Brits or US to decide what’s the best way to do things? It’s an overreach. If other countries want to change they will do it, from within, when it’s time. And I don’t think having two guys being able to get married is the greatest achievement of humanity. I don’t care how much flack I get for this but that’s what I think.
Money Matters.
You forget to point out the work slavery in the entire Persian Gulf region.
Who are western countries to sanction against other countries
Hard working Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis made this possible. Their misfortune was exploited. Their hard work deserves respect.
the fact that you likely posted this with a smartphone while wearing some generic sports brand clothing as you sip your latte makes it all the funnier
Their slave labor will always be remember by me. Unfortunately not everyone is caring and want slaves...
No. I am not even watching this world cup.
I just feel for them because I happen to be a luckier Indian (or could be from any country) who had the privilege of education, got a PhD in science and worked in 4 different countries. Still working hard to make an impact in the world.
Directly or indirectly, everyone wants to benefit from slavery (real slavery/corporate slavery). Well, nasty things like the old-style slavery has only been done by a certain groups of humans on earth. A lot of those humans dont do it anymore because they dont need it anymore. But dont forget, there were human zoos in Belgium just a few decades back. They killed millions in Congo just for money. So humans have not changed as such. Qatar is just directly exploiting because it can. It is just an unfortunate situation.
@Binyamin that justifies this shitty behavior exactly how? Since you bring the point up
They are being exploited but they're far from the only ones...
Almost all FIFA 2022 projects in Qatar were awarded and executed by Western companies, who recruited migrant workers. And, Western governments lobbied very hard to push Qatar not to change workers' policies to protect to their own Western companies.

@Onni Hütten aah does someone come US for work and getting that kind of treatment is okay?
@Onni Hütten Right, because their treatment in their home countries is worse, they deserve to face that kind of treatment. No wonder.
@Onni Hütten they didn't force them to come YES I agree with that but their situations did force them. But what the the Qatar government and their contractors did was made them hook in a trap that they can't escape . They were forced to do labours . They weren't allowed to change jobs if they do they would end up in jail. They weren't allowed on the residential area except for one place which was out the city area near to a sewage pond .The government needed to build the infrastructure projects within a limited time so they send scout to some of the countries which have unemployment even those workers have low literacy rates that was an advantage for the government . The contractors take these workers passport from them fearing that they would run away.and they would be given contract to sign when they 1st land in the country. The contract would be in Arabic so that ,so it's a disadvantage to the workers because they can't even understand a word. Even if they ask their superiors they could easily fool them .Just because u r born into an abusive family doesn't mean anyone can abuse u right ? If the government can spent so much money for useless things how come they can't provide them better living conditions, those workers put their blood and and sweat to into that many young healthy people died. Does ur family send u to some country to work and comeback in coffin? I think u have never seen the living conditions of people who are immigrant workers there. They attract tourists by showing those high rise buildings and developed areas but in reality those people who gave their everything and suffered end up getting paid like peanuts. While the government who did all those horrible things to the people after taking advantage of them chills in their luxurios mansions . It's not just Qatar other Gulf countries are on this too.
We won this battle and we are celebrating the world cup, this smear campaign has failed long time ago lol😂🎉

Nhmm Na, it's a different culture. Different values. The world is huge and there are many people in it that have different values and tradition than the west obviously.
Not every country likes recording anything on the street, not everyone likes themselves being recorded and posted on social media and have the whole world comment on your picture or whatever. This is the normal tho? now you see people recording someone drowning or getting bullied and not actually go to rescue them and its not normal at all you know.

Here’s the thing with Qatar, just like any other countries, there’s inequality. And it all depends on your profession & passport. Those who hold Western passports would most likely get a very good salary package & would enjoy a work-life balance. But if you come from countries as mentioned in this documentary like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, then prepare to become a slave. Even the domestic helpers from countries like Indonesia or Philippines is also at risk. However, if you arw from these countries but are professionals like doctor, engineers, you can also get a good life but not as much as Western people. An Asian Engineer, will not get the same salary as let’s say a Bristish engineer even if you are working in the same company & have the same position. Colonial mentality in the Middle East is rampant. But of course, the locals/Qataris are the ones who reap all the great benefits of their country.
Appreciate your efforts to pull this together 😊. Keep it up
People from Asia are at risk everywhere they face racial discrimination in their home country and in European countries too. But qatar is very good

MORE than 10% are watching world cup. We are currently 8 Billion people on earth. not 10.
This is possible the most tepid and meek understatement of the current situation in Qatar on youtube. Literally every other journalist is less lukewarm about the obvious human rights violations. I expected better from DW. Every fact you have stated, whilst true, has already been stated by another source, so all you do is repeat the well-established in a milquetoast manner? This is not at all what I had come to expect of you. Do better.
The Westerners need to understand the World is not the West nor the Western values are supernatural to overvalue other cultures. I am not from Qatar but I don't see any problem with the country banning many practices which are simply not permitted in their cultural beliefs. Respect each other culture to live in harmony.
This was so well made, I really admire the efforts made by the team and my heart goes out for those who lost their lives into making a sand dune into a mega city hub with no freedom for the poors and low class people.🙌
How do you think other developing countries like such America and Australia are established?
@@aishachandio6688 I'm talking about modern day slavery, I know what they did but not condemning the current situation and just pointing fingers on other developed countries is not the right thing to do I'd say.
@@qwertyali2943 you have no idea what ya talking about.
@@z6811888 yeah I do, I don't idolised these arab morons(sorry if you're one of them) just because they're muslims, they have no feelings for humans and their basic rights, I know what the arab leaders like Saddam or Gaddafi did so it's better you stop lecturing me what to say what not to say here dude...
@@homer1273 lol what was it then before 10-20yrs? Yes, a fucking sand dune xD
I havent said "wow" so much at all these magnificent shots in a documentary in a long time!!
Well-rounded film.
Of course. When the west wants tries to put an Arab country (whose doing well) down. They will do anything to release a video trying to nitpick things that they themselves (all western countries) have been doing for 100’s of years. And you sheep will continue to believe and support your corrupt government who treats you like a pet and takes all your money year after year.
Gotta live dw and Al Jazeera best documentaries in the world
Back in 1830 when the British brought my ancestors from India to Guyana on slave ships man woman and children. And work them seven days a week on the sugar plantation from sun up to sun down. No body ever called that inhumane or slavery conditions. Or even teach this history in school.
Thank you for reminding the people of that.
When western countries accuse Qatar, they too should be accused for what they have done !
This is about the World Cup. Qatar doesn't have World Cup history. There is no World Cup without Europe and Latin America. If many of those countries withdraw from FIFA, forget the World Cup. It's not just about migrants or human rights. The US was supposed to be awarded 2022. It was instead awarded to a country with very little infrastructure that never made it to the cup simply because they paid a huge amount of bribes. This isn't about the West. It's not like Latin America is a fan of playing there. If FIFA doesn't change, countries should withdraw from FIFA. End of story.
Qatar is a shinning example of visionary leadership, but also a society that values education, hard work, and sacred pragmatism . I only wished as Africans, we can learn a lot from Qatar’s unprecedented modernization drive! It’s never too late!
Can I respectfully ask what you mean by visonary leadership? Qatar has spent decades trying to diversify its economy, but today its petro and petrochemical industries make up 95% of exports, if you add energy subsidies, e.g. high-energy aluminium smelting at 2%, then exports are basically 100% fossile fuel-derived.
As rich nations gradually decarbonize, there will be a tipping point where Qatars income will collapse, as demand from low and middle-income countries will only support a much smaller income.
So far diversification is exactly the same as for other small Persian Gulf states, based mostly on tourism and almost identical wishes to become financial centers.
Tourism is also currently subsidized by fossile fuel income, when that icome dries out, they will compete for the few rich tourist who want to take holidays in November-January, don't mind the reduced freedoms and don't mind the narrow scope of touristic offerings. It will not work out.
Financial sectorwise, they can of course all set themselves up of off-shores etc., but those setups provides almost no income for host nations (that is their whole purpose). Full spectrum financial centers only exist in vibration economies where there are industries and inovations worth financing.
Basically, the ruling familiy is paying their citizens enough not to rock the boat. When the ruling family cannot do so anymore, what will stop the country from collapsing?
One of the richest countries in the Middle East and they pay migrant workers 28 euros a day !
I've seen a french politician condemn the amount of mosques in Doha!!!! did you buy us and we do not know?!!
A wonderful documentary coverage about progressing steps of modern Qatar ( Qatar formerly spending to much money's for showing its modernized, wealthy & intervention in regional political issues...thanks for sharing ..DW always introduces interesting& bravery documentary coverage videos...this video disclosure two different or opposite sides behind superficial brilliant Qatar 🇶🇦
Their money no one can say how they should spand it. Well done qatar for building your country
This wasn't a documentary just an advert paid by Qatar. Full of propaganda. No mention of slavery and just "overreported" deaths of migrant workers aka slaves which they've been known to abuse and take their passports. They didn't even mention the bribery scandal of FIFA and how Qatar betrayed their assurances for foreigners. Stopping those wearing rainbow clothing and showing outright bigotry towards women and lgbt.
1:12 I'm pretty sure she meant to say "football".
free education, free healthcare, no taxes, its exactly the dream of everyone.
But American democracy is way better 🙂
Seven and a half years...
700 million euros. For only 7 games played there total. All to run around in a field to kick a ball around, In what seems to be an almost autocratic hellscape.
We humans uh, we really got our priorities straightened out with a dying planet and all, huh? 👀
soo tell me, Qatar spent 229b usd on the world cup, but its going to profit from it around 26b, id rather profit then donate 200usd than donating 100usd
Thank you FIFA for your 300 billion dollar spectacle in the desert.
Thank you FIFA for banning free live stream of world cup .
Thank you FIFA for forcing people to pay extra money to cable operators to watch the games.
Thank you FIFA for your EXCLUSIVE shows.
Thank you FIFA for not raising urgent social issues of migrants.
Thank you...
First off it's our money not fifa, secondly it's 220 not 300 billion... 😂
also..get mad, sad and get shit on 💩
man so much hate just because a middle eastern country hosts. DW trying to hard to show Qatar the worst way. 😂 heres something it’s called the world cup for a reason.
Arab country does exceedingly well: time for journalists to go in and dig up as much negative as they can. Now, if it wasn't qatar but a western country you would hear a different songs
24:15 same conditions for eastern european workers in getmany or UK
Ah yes, the famous British and German desert heat. Horrible.
Ah yes, when I went to kindergarten the "but miss, he did it too!!!" was very popular.
Keep those documentaries coming.. now is the time
Since 2010, when the country corruptly acquired the world cup. ☝️
And if that were so.. why is the blame only targeted at Qatar? Why not at FIFA? If they weren’t corrupt even Qatar offering 20 trillion wouldn’t have gotten them the World Cup. People conveniently look at one side only.
You hypocrites
how are they not sweating, i need to know
DW didnt find any problem now in qatar so lets try bullying qatar weather 😂
What's most interesting is that Qatar is by far the least authoritarian, most "liberal" of all the Arab monarchies. Qatar is basically Sweden compared to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
swedistan you mean?
Every country has their own right to govern their own country how they like. Everyone makes their own choices
I swear to God that's so poignant. People are just sheep nowadays being hearded by MSM unfortunately and judge things before they have even experienced them. That's so ignorant for a civilisation that prides itself on how civilised and tolerant they are as modern humans.
I wouldn't say it's more liberal than the UAE or Kuwait. It's similar to Kuwait and the UAE, actually. You have a point with Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, though.
@@scottgordon9931 idiotic statement
Qatar looks like a wonderful place, and wonderful people, I love it, besides bad western propaganda
They arrest people for no reason and put lgbtq people in prison. They mistreat immigrants and tens of thousands have died.
And you think that Arab propaganda is better, you ignorant person..
@@gervas4935 Maybe they just have their own values and those have to be respected, not all the wold have to be liberal as western want to
