Usually unreleased demos are unreleased demos for a reason. But DAMN this one is great! I love Light Years but you can make the case that this version of the song - if it had been finished - is even better.
An amazing look at how art evolves. At how ideas morph and take shape and are sometimes held for years until the right spark hits. One reason I love Pearl Jam is how organic their music is. They make music the old fashioned way. Through feeling things out and jamming. So glad to finally hear this!
This is a really cool, interesting demo to hear. Pretty hard to see how it became Light Years until 2:40 (like another commenter stated), except for a few lyrics here and there. Cameron's drumming is really good and interesting here. They must have liked that bridge. Rightfully so.
This version has a really great... honestly it sounds more like a Pearl Jam song than what Light Years became (though I like that song)... wish they had pursued this direction more. Could have been a big hit, it seems to me. Long live and prosper, PJ 🖖
I still can't believe Pearl Jam never finished / released this version. It is utterly incredible. One of the greatest songs of all time just sits in a musical grave yard. Oh well, at least some of us know it exists...."I miss you...."

Has Ed ever mentioned “Light Years” being about Kurt? For some reason I always thought that lyric “we were but stones…your light made us stars” was for KC, but that might just be me?

technically this is the original. But I know what you mean. I think that's why they changed it.
Specifically cause t reminded them of Given To Fly (even though Let It Ride and Fatal are way more similar imo)
