Sometimes you just need a good laugh.
Bottom line...if they sound good, play 'em.
Please take them, I hate these cymbals
ha-ha, i have no cymbals!
"You make motorcycles, stay, making motorcycles" oh my goodness i died of laughter when he said that. Haha but he's right, that's just unnatural not in a good way at all. As a drummer myself, I can say the same. Love the videos though, hes helped with so many of my drumming techniques
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my account password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Lawrence Ayaan Instablaster :)
I played a set of those 'bell-bottom' Staccatos in the mid-90s and they are incredible. Just totally epic. If you see a set, don't run!
Bingo
Everyone: wants to see weird drums
Stephen: plays with his beard
Sorry, what'd you say? Couldn't hear you. I was playing with my beard.
Stephen Taylor lmfao gottie
The deltadrums didn’t have triangular cymbals smh
Lol
Lmao, probly due to safety violations with drummer's like Keith Moon -RIP.
I would bet money they had some somewhere in their factory as prototypes if not retail items.
Just add these: musicshipping.co.uk/ajax/image/aHR0cHM6Ly9tdXNpY3NoaXBwaW5nLmNvLnVrL21lZGlhL2ltYWdlcy9zaG9wL3Byb2R1Y3RzLzU1YzQ4M2UzYzUwNDguanBn
The Trixon and Vox ones are made to put 2 separate kick pedals on one drum. The inside of the drum is separated into two halves so they can be 2 different pitches.
The Speedfire Bassdrum is an eye catcher. Engineered in Germany in 1960th. Don t laugh about it before you played it.
The melting bass design is extremely old and has been around for over 80 years. I have seen pictures from the Gretch museum.
1:55 that motorcycle manufacturer is one of the finest drum makers on the planet...
Martín Borda he didn’t mean the company, he just meant the motorcycle engineers. I agree with you, Yamaha drums are badass, just overpriced
Nothing beats that
Gretsch sound
So many greats play them to this day. I don't have a favorite company but i know they're fantastic drums
@@parkermeredith6035 the stage customs are the best drum for the money on the planet..
From a drummer's standpoint this vid ranks with Spinal Tap for comedy. ....tune the corners 1st, LMAO. The triangle/octagon drum company's probly sent out a geometrical equation with every kit sold to tune their drum.
Random guy: dude i cant find any snare heads
Me: what size do ya need?
Guy: umm well, its complicated
Me: Just tell me ill see if i can help
Guy: i have triangular drums
Me: get. Out.

When you said pancake drums, the first thing that came to my mind were eggo pancakes. I’m hungry
Eggo only makes waffles.

"If you make motorcycles, you should probably stay making motorcycles"
_Sweats in Yamaha music, which technically is different subsidiary of Yamaha group, but is the oldest business of Yamaha_
I was referring to the engineering team. If you are a motorcycle engineering team, you should probably stick to motorcycles. I have a circa 1980s Yamaha recording custom kit. We all know they made the best drums back then.
Stephen, I converted a full kit by Sound Percussion into shallow shells just for a practice kit. I got the idea from a set of Ludwigs I played in a church back in the 90’s. The toms were 5” deep and it had three toms mounted on the kick drum like a triangle. The 8” Tom was on top between the 10” & 12” toms, the kick was a 22x12 or 14”. I think the kit was from the 60’s or70’s. They sounded awesome! I tried to look the up online and haven’t had any luck finding them!
I'd love to hear those!
Stephen Taylor, I did do a video of playing them. I used my shure mv88 into my iPhone which it does work, but for that video it didn’t. I went to play it back to hear it and there was no sound. I’ll have to set them up and do another sound test and post it up on my UA-cam channel.
I once took the drummer of my band to a shop in Antwerp called "Strings and Things" and they had this HUGE drum department full of Vintage kits, which included turn of the century kits some with oblong shaped kick drums. But they also had a full Staccato kit. My buddy asked if he could have a go and was told "Sure thing"
...How should I describe the sound of those drums? "Instant Phil Collins." it just nailed that wallop and cannon shot sound he was known for and boy were they ever LOUD!
My friend Daniel Glass has a Trixon head in his studio.
From what I've been told, they actually sounded good. I believe they made those so that two bass drum pedals could fit on it. I could be wrong there but I think that was the idea.
5:43 - Slinky got into the drum game. (Great vid dude)
The Illuminati set was dope the bass needs eye on reso head though
Man, so many videos, quality content, great tutorials and tips. This channel is not bigger because more drummers haven't discovered it, keep up that great work, man. You're one of the best drum channels here!
Thanks my friend! I've got some more fun stuff in the pipes I think you'll dig
3:20 Well I guess that kick sounds boxy lol.

Always creepin'
@@StephenTaylorDrums can you do a drum cover of spirit of radio by rush?
Is anyone else as surprised as I am that Stephen's eyes could get so big? That thumbnail is hilarious. 😆 But seriously though, I'd have a go on all of those kits if given the chance.
I'm weirder looking than a lot of people give me credit for.
Great research, Stephen. Always love your insights and your sense of humor. Thank you, bro. Sincerely, RandyC.
"You have such an angular way of playing." "No, man, it's just the shape of my drums!"
Jason wins.
To be fair, that pancake snare is pretty interesting. I would use that as a secondary snare to the left of my hi-hat, would probably be great in hip-hop and EDM.
I have an old arbiter flats kit for teaching with, surprisingly nice sounding. Don't forget that Trixon also did the conical drums for a while. As for the heads on the last ones, easy, its just lapped animal hyde onto a metal 'ring'
Staccato drums are actually kinda sick though. Weird as hell, but innovative and cool (though insanely loud)
Please do more of these! So good!
John Bonham played on a set of "elbow pipe" drums for the recording of In Through the Out Door. Pretty sure it was the house kit a Polar Studios- meaning it was probably also used to record the drums on the latter ABBA albums.
You are an awesome teacher, Stephen!! I am learning a lot
Tbh, pancake drums are not so weird... They are very useful in small apartments with mesh heads for silent and space-saving practice (like in my case).
North drums sound sound really good live when mic'ed. Especially outdoors, first heard them in the mid 80"s.
Trixon drums appeared to be conceived late on a Friday afternoon in the 60s while rolling a stash of fat ones for a long weekend with the boys.
But they truly are amazing drums..despite their squashed physique.
Stay high, it's the American way to do drugs and tell the US Government to fuck themselves.
We saw YES in 1977. Alan White played a set of North drums . Russell Kunkle played North drums on " Running on Empty"/ Jackson Browne. A photo of his kit was on the album
I didn't know that about Russell. Thanks for the info!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Thanks for the walk/ wobble down memory lane .
There's video of Primus from the late 90's where Brain is using a couple of those North drums on his kit.
That last one looks like it was part of yin an yang. Just missing yang.
The Heineken keg drum set is actually at the Heineken museum tour in Amsterdam and you can sit down and play it
The Ischer Drums sounded actuals really cool, especially the adjustable Snare. Peter Ischer was from Aarau Switzerland (same town I live in) nearly all parts were handmade, that's why they were that expensive.
The commentary on some of these had me laughing out loud.
"Dryer vent drums"... Hilarious 😂😆😅😆
I love this guy, he's such a good teacher. but he's obviously a super nice guy
The guy that taught me the basics and more in drums was the drum engineer for peavey electronics. I had the private of playing on many of their prototypes. Including 1000 radial shells and 750 radial rims combo. But toward the end we switched to just the rims which I'm assuming was similar to the pancake drums. I loved playing in them great sound easy packing.
Hey man, I am a drummer myself, but I don't know how to upgrade my kit. Could you possibly make a video of some good websites and some recommended drums? I would REALLY appreciate it.
One thing I suggested was a clear drumset with acrylic. That was back in 2000
😂😂You do some great videos Steve.
Strawberry Alarm Clock uses a drum set that has a unique shape. When I saw them live last year, they used that drum set
I herd the north drums in a bar band ,had a power punch as you would expect but really full for not having bottom heads.
Trixon actually makes a nice cocktail set. Although it’s not the melting type lol. I gig small venues and house parties with the cocktail set.
I can't even believe Peter Erskine went withing 100 miles of that kit!
Again, a very intense heading.
If someone sees me running away from a drum kit, they'll think I lost my marbles 🤪🤪
Everybody knows the only acceptable polygon for drums is the hexagon - and only if they're electronic.
There are a bunch of square traditional drums
Chad Channing, the first drummer of Nirvana, wrote most of the drum parts for the songs that would become Nevermind on North drums....
I had a bright yellow Staccato kit bought 2ndhand in the early 80s. Not that loud sitting behind it but out front incredibly so! John Bonham and Nicko McBrain have been known to use Staccato and Billy Cobham played a North kit early-mid 70s...
This is totally awesome 👏🏾 Thank You for sharing knowledge on different types of drums 💙💜❤️☮️ with humor 😁 too 🤣
You bet!
This is your first video I’ve watched an I love your channel already
Thanks!

I use to have a set of North Drums. I really loved them. They sounded different from standard drums, but that's what I loved.
Yea a lot of people loved the sound of them. And really, lets be honest, the sound is all that matters
@@StephenTaylorDrums yeah, the flip side of that is they did not have a "traditional" sound to them. A lot of drummers couldn't get past that, even though when they would hear them, before seeing them, they liked the way they sounded. Single head drums are a devisive subject to begin with, then add the fact that they were fiberglass, or something like that, instead of wood. I loved them personally, and people's eyes would always pop out when they first saw them. And you rarely had to mic them, as they were indeed very loud if you wanted them to be. They actually forced the drummer to learn dynamics.
I had a North Set. Double bass. 6 rack toms plus a floor (6,8,10,10,12,12,14 IIRC). Only ever played a single rack out. Very loud, very dead sound. Drums would "nest" inside each other.
Had a custom pancake snare made for me, guy called it blueberry pancake finish. Thing sounds like a straight sample, its awesome 👌
That ellipsoidal shaped Trixon drum set was actually used by Bill Haley's drummer Dave Holly. Buddy Rich and Ringo Starr also played Trixon (very briefly, though).
Odysseus Laertiades
Brian Bennett of The Shadows also briefly played a Trixon before moving on to Ludwig and Premier..
Buddy didn’t use that Trixon set. He used one of their standard sets.
ok I subscribed ...now leave m cymbals alone!!! loved this episode
How do you find heads for those weird drums?
Interesting. Thank you for posting. 👍
Saw Billy Cobham couple times in the 70s and he played the hell outta some north drums
I had a Purecussion “rim set”.... just heads yeah but they sounded very good and I gigged with them for a few years and have regretted letting them go. 🥞🥁🥁
A local music store had some of those back in the day, and I thought they sounded pretty good as well.
Trixon drums, north drums, and those wine barrel drum are cool.
I remember the north drums in the late 70s early 80s. Always wanted them 🤘🤘
I’d be tempted to buy those triangle drums, just for collecting. They’d look good beside a Trixon set
Agree
I saw Ron Bushy play drums like that Staccato kit with Iron Butterfly except I remember the bottom heads were square. They sounded like plastic buckets.
Interesting
Those North Drums are incredible.
Oh man! That Ischer kit! I want one!
I had a full set of North Drums, at one time. Had a great sound.
Man, they'd prob be worth a little something now. That's why I'm hanging on to my Yamaha Recording Customs. I typically just keep my gear and buy new because I'm afraid I'm going to sell something I'll regret one day lol
Taylor Hawkins used a kit that looks like those North/Staccato kits in the Foo Fighters video for White Limo
&... the trixon/Vox bass drums have two different size chambers with space for two bass drum pedals, it’s fking awesome
I love the alligator skin wrap on the VOX Telstar
Its slick!
The set that looked like air vents would be great for a local musician that plays around the area... Easy to transport.
North Drums were very real in the Seventies. Up until a few years ago, Roger North was still playing actively in Portland, OR, on one of his own drum sets.
I didn't know that he was still playing! I also didn't know they were named after someone. Thanks for the info!
@@StephenTaylorDrums I'm not sure that he still is these days. If you figure out the numbers, he's got to be at least seventy, possibly quite a bit more, and I only know about him still playing because I saw those drums set up on the stage of a bar. But I haven't been in that bar for ten or fifteen years, so it was a while ago.
it's odd you're just seeing some of this stuff for the 1st time (unless you're just doing a bit). North/Staccato have been around for 50 years, Trixon and Vox since the '60s
I'm honestly not a gear guy. So I've never spent much time REALLY looking at some of these drums. More of a passing glance. This is the first time I've actually sat down to dig in on some of them. I'd love to do a video where we see how they all sound
@@StephenTaylorDrums Actually John Bonham played one of these Staccato drums. You can see it when he plays with Paul McCartney ua-cam.com/video/uf7lZeT0Wec/v-deo.html
Wasn't sure if you're a Bonham fan but who isn't?)
Those are some weird drums! If you have not heard of a man by the name of Ralph Kester, look him up. He is the one that invented The Ching Ring, and the Hi- Stepper drum and the Flat Jacks or the original pancake drums. That last drum you featured is in the of shape an outline of an ear lobe and helix. Great video!
Stockhausen was an important German composer for experimental music (nine notes and overtones, for example). This drum also bears more resemblance to orchestral drums.
The Yamaha part reminds me more of an art performance
Yup ! Staccato is ugly and pain in the ass to transport, but if you think sound projection, it's the number one!
You miss the Arbiter flats, some pancake drums with ONE tuning key, really good sound and easy to tune, easy to move in 3 bags , 1 for the drums , 1 for the cymbals and 1 for the stands.
So how much attack can these drums give my performance?
Pancake Kit: Yes.
Ha!
I can put something in on the North drums. I met a guy that had these. I saw set of North Drums. They do exist and they are weird looking.
North and Staccato are 2 different companies. Don’t know about north but staccato still makes drums. The shape is engineered to make the drums project way more than a conventional drum. From what I understand you don’t really have to mic a staccato set unless you’re playing in a really big venue.
I want my 70s Ludwig Big Beat Butcher Block finish drums, with the granitone coating, back!
Id buy those triangle drums just for a display piece.. lmao
i'd love to see more videos of u like this
Keep watching...
The vox kit with the melting bass drum was used in a artic monkeys video 4 their álbum tranquility base hotel & casino, i think the song was "four out of five". Great videos by the way
I believe John Bonham played very similar drums to the first ones shown on parts of Fool In The Rain. Possibly other parts of Zeps work too.
0:00 is an incredible darth vader impression , and you don’t even know it
5:46 i thought it looked like an accordion but it was made into a weird drum set
Hi Steve. The first kit you showed is real. In the early 90's I was in to my rock music & went to a nightclub/disco & on the stage was one of them there kits in blue.
It blow my mind just sat there& when they started playing it was loud very loud. When I got my first kit I took the bottom skins off the tom's to make my kit as load as possible lol (I thought it was the dogs dangleys) then I let a proper drummer have ago & then I realized why they have bottom skins lol.
Some made kits out there lol
We can almost excuse the lack of knowledge of the legendary North Drums, but how about a video on how Trixon actually revolutionized modern day drum manufacturing and was way ahead of their time. For example. All models of Trixon drums hid some incredible engineering inside, like that melted bass drum was actually dual chambered and played with a special double pedal, or that they basically invented the drum rack system, or how avout the incredible technology in the other lesser known Trixon drums... you could do a whole video on the amazing stuff Trixon did, and not just the weird bass drums.....
Hey Stephen, check out Zickos drums, made back in the 70s. They made some very unusual sizes and shapes. Floyd Sneed of three dog night toured with those in 73 through 74
Chad Channing from Nirvana use to play those North drums ..hehehe No wonder he got fired ....
The concept for the Trixon bass is to have 2 tones. There is a removable divider between the small and large sides and it came with two pedals. The original 1960's Vox drums where Trixon's (German) rebadged for the American market...
And you can still special order the heads from Remo.
Its a cool concept. Thought it was kind of dumb before since i didnt understand it but you will never get the full roudness of a true round drum that you strike dead center. You'd just to find the right playing context for this kick.
Trixon & vox ..has a big & small chamber, fits 2 pedals
Person: what do you play?
Me: I play the triangle
My local drum shop has a trixon kit.
Am I the only one digging the triangle drums? 🤩
i wouldn’t mind my drummer showing up with some triangle drums tbh 😂
799 pounds is for 1 zoom snare not the entire kit.
